How the hell can Beckett authenticate that ??? I'm sure they've seen so many of her autos that their experts. Give me a break. I hope that came like that and the seller didn't pay Beckett. Having some dork from Beckett tell me that auto is real means about as much to me as the guys who sell the "gold" chains on the Center City streets of Philly telling me about their fake chains.

Just read the scrip and the seller DID PAY Beckett to authenticate it. What a waste of time and money.

I find that funny too...wonder why he didnt have it graded (yet states it would be a 9.5). Granted its a 1 of 1, but I'd think that rare of a card, if the condition was that good, I'd of had them slap a raw grade on it (which I presume they were doing at the national?)

I can't remember if I told you guys this story or not. Went to a show in Cincinnati in the early 90's and had Teddy Ballgame sign two baseballs. Held them for years and went to the National a couple years ago to get them authenticated. Spent $154.00 for PSA to tell me they were fakes. I was furious, and NO ONE from PSA would even talk to me other than the lackeys out front. Someone overheard me and said he was friends with Jim Spence, and that I could throw his name to him and Mr. Spence would look at the balls for free. I did this, and Jim glanced at them for two seconds and said he knew they were fake from the way the T looped or something. Now Jim was a very nice guy, and it was nice of him to do it for free (and I am not calling him out as a scam artist), BUT these authenticators have no clue what's real and what isn't real when I had the balls signed in my presence and find out from the "experts" that the autos were fake. Maybe they get 95% of them right, but the fact remains I know they don't get ALL of them right, and that makes them worthless to me. If this doesn't sour everyone on these auto experts, nothing will. I STILL can't get over it.

BGS grades cards of mine that are autographed all the time. They give the grade of 9.5 and grade the auto as you all know. So why couldn't they grade the card AND authenticate it? I'm sure I'm missing something here, but it's just not making sense to me.

You can pay to just get it authenticated. Since it's a 1 of 1, there really is no need to get it graded.

Does it cost less to just get it authenticated? With so many 1/1's out in the market now, I'd much rather have one that's a Gem Mint than one that's not.

It's the same price and I've used that service a few times... I don't think items like non-parallel 1/1's, printing plates, sketch cards and (most) non-sport autographs need to be graded.

yet... you want to make sure your stuff isn't altered and want the same serial numbering and protection BGS offers. Why get Mother Teresa graded when it could get a 7.5... what are you comparing it against? Beckett dosen't authenticate the autograph, Topps did already (we guess)... it authenticates that it's not altered or a fake A&G card and protects it.

I bought altered stuff on Ebay... it wasn't fun when Beckett sends it back saying black marker was dectected on a corner.

Beckett can't authenticate their ass with both hands. If not for the shiny garbage and the "dorks" on their message boards that support them PSA or SGC would have buried them years ago!!!

I do like the half grades though. Too bad PSA does not do .5 grades. In my opinion.

Didn't this guy say he was offer $20Gs to sell the card at the National. I would have taken the sure-thing case rather than auction the card on eBay. Mother Teresa signed items aren't that tough to find, so the cut was easy to acquire. In my opinion the card is overvalued at its current price. Anyone else have an opinion.

Yep so he said and if so looks like he messed up!!! How or why would anyone turn down 20g for that card????? GREED which has pretty much destroyed the hobby from what I remember when I started buying cards and packs in 1974.

I have a couple Gordie Howe autos, both signed in my presence, from the early 70's that do not look as neat as most of his autos I see with COA's. He was watching the Flint Generals of the old IHL at the IMA Sports Arena, not sitting at a table, taking his time.

I believe that this old saying fits to the max. It's when 2 fools met one for offering and the other for turning it down.
I also believe that the card is way over valued too.

Plus...now he has to pay e-bay fees, paypal fees (if paid through paypal).

It's my understanding that authentic only means the card is "real" and not tampered with.

For example, there was some discussion awhile ago about my 2001 SP Authentic LaDainian Tomlinson NFL Shield. Some people said they heard from UD that no shields were included, but clearly the card I have is original/authentic. Beckett was easily able to authenticate it - however, if it had been tampered, they simply won't grade.

Point is - getting it graded 9.5 WOULD authentice it. Hard to imagine that somebody selling that many and that quality of cards wouldn't know that???

So, the auction ended at $10,100, almost $10G less than the seller claims he could have gotten at the National.

What kind of idiot would turn down 20 g's in the first place. It is just a card which he had no more than the price of the box invested in. He was going to get a premium regardless. How can you put an expected value on a card like that anyway. If I was to get lucky and pull a gold or better auto of one of these top guys in Bowman Chrome I will just start at .99 and let it run for 5 days. No since getting greedy since I am going to get unexpected big money anyway.

I like your use of the word "claim." I find it very hard to believe that story. I think he just hyped his own card. Probably worked too. Something about that guy I don't like. I think his comment about the Rip card really is what put me over the edge.

Personally I don't believe he was offered $20G to start with I think it was BS all along but IF he did I think GREED got the best of him!!!! I have yet to see a card I could pull and not take $20G for immediately and I would hand deliver the damn thing!!!
