Crazy world we live in. Rex keeps his job and Rob gets the can even though it can hardly be blamed on him that the offense was a complete disaster.

I didnt follow the Cowboys very closely but wasnt Rob Ryan pretty much the only competent coach on the staff? Seems like their D is usually the more reliable side of the team anyway

The offense struggled and the defense played without 1/2 their starters most of the year, heck even the back-ups started going down. I hope a new OC (not head coach) is next and the LB, DL, and secondary coaches are kept.

I thought so as well, especially w/ the injuries, but they allowed 30 more points this year.

+1...Rob got the short end of the stick here because of all the injuries. Don't know how you can fire him for that. Fire the strength and conditioning coach.

Bad firing. The Cowboys defense was depleted basically from October onwards. How do you expect them to hold teams to 15-20 points a game with half of the defense missing?
(I'm over-exaggerating on the "half of their defense part, you may no longer point that out to me. All I'm saying is a lot of players were missing).

It was just over half lol
Lee, Carter, Ratliff, Coleman, Church, Scandrick...those were all starters

I think this had more to do with Ryan not fitting Garrett's style. Ryan is to reckless. From penaltys for yelling at the other team, to guaranteeing wins, just don't think that's Garret's style.

I would have liked to see him get another shot with a healthy D,I am surprised.

This is probably part of the reason he's never been a successful D coordinator. There was a sound bite from him on Dallas radio a couple months ago where he basically alluded to the fact that he had multiple head coaching jobs lined up before he took the D coordinator job in Dallas. Furthermore, his comments were something along the lines of, "I had several head coaching offers. I didn't have to interview, they just called me and told me the job was mine if I wanted it."
There's nothing worse than a girl who is a 5 but thinks she's a 10. Rob Ryan is that girl.

Ryan made a lot of boneheaded calls...specifically not blitzing when he should have...and leaving the middle of the field open a LOT...I watched every Cowboys game this year and i don't know how many times i saw them set up the D and thought to myself "yep, we're about to get roasted" and sure enough...
Garrett needs to go, Romo needs to go, and Bill Callahan needs to go...Romo might have to stick around for at least one more year because I don't know that anyone worth a damn will be a free agent this year, the draft is dry...other than Vick, which would probably be a disaster...it's kinda slim pickings.

They need to draft a QB, (Tyler Wilson? Matt Barkley later?) keep Romo around for a few years, stuff the rookie on the bench as the 3rd stringer and bring him along like Ryan Mallett with the Pats. There's no reason why they shouldn't have a rookie QB in the camp that could be counted on in a few years.
As far as Bill Callahan, WHY THE HELL DOES THIS GUY STILL WORK FOR THE COWBOYS?! The o-line is terrible, absolutely terrible.

Not sure how any of the coaches still have a job on this team. The team is filled with a bunch of under achievers. You would think that they would get better over the years and would like to solve the problems they had the year before. Just firing Ryan will not solve this teams problems.

they should start trading around with some crappy teams for a 1st round pick in a couple of years and go after Johnny Football lol.

Long time Cowboy fan here--or long suffering as of late---
I know I am probably reiterating early statements but did not see this one coming---
guy was passionate--a bit reckless maybe, but man he kept the teams defense somewhat in it with limited resources due to a rash of injuries----I know injuries are part of the game but man......------next guy is probably gonna due pretty well with healthy bodies----
interesting how well wade phillips did once he left Dallas and accepted a position he has always been good at---check out Texans D since he got there

When Jerry fires the GM, I'll give a damn.
Until then, this is all rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Sorry to see Rob go, though--I thought he added an attitude that had been sorely lacking around Valley Ranch.

Amen. It's like the old saying about a person who represents themselves in court has an idiot for a client? Cowboys have an idiot for a GM.

Yeah, but you're forgetting that (according to him), he'll only "be out of work for like 5 minutes."
I think that statement says a lot about the kind of guy he is.

I would not be surprised. Someone will hire him.
I think he should have been given one more year, because when healthy, this was a top defense in the league
Fire the strength and conditioning coach.
This is a lazy cry for action.
All of the injuries to the starters on defense were freakish to say the least. Sean Lee's toe got turned around the wrong way, that has nothing to do with conditioning. Costa's ankle almost get's dislocated because a Raven lands on it at a weird angle, that isn't a conditioning issue.

I wouldn't mind Wilson landing as a developmental player, he has shown a lot in college.
Livings needs to go bye-bye, light in the ass and plays soft. Bernadeau wasn't terrible, the Center position was a complete mess due to injuries. Free is as good as gone. Smith is still very young. There's potential there, and drafting at 18 will almost guarantee a top Guard or Center will be available.
they should start trading around with some crappy teams for a 1st round pick in a couple of years and go after Johnny Football lol.
Good God no! He's shorter than Romo and his offense is a total option read offense, that won't translate well into the NFL.
When Jerry fires the GM, I'll give a damn.

The whole Jerry is a bad GM argument is old. He's not perfect, but he's not alone in his decision making, hell the president of Player-Personnel is Stephen Jones (his son), and those two have almost come to blows in the draft room due to wanting different players. Jerry overrode Bill Parcells on DeMarcus Ware when Parcells wanted Marcus Spears at 11 in 2005.
Rob Ryan is kind of played in the NFL, a lot of flash & pop, but little substance. The D was okay, not particularly great overall, even with healthy. They still didn't get turnovers with him or Wade.

i was being sarcastic. They don't have anything to trade for 1st round picks at this point anyway.

Anybody that says "Calvin Johnson would be the 4th best receiver on our team", clearly isn't smart enough to hold a job in the NFL......idiot

As a Cowboys fan... good. Maybe the endless stupid penalties that nobody is ever held accountable for, the piss poor tackling and general lack of passion will go with him. He seems like he cares, too bad it doesn't rub off on his 'team'.

I'm ok with Rob Ryan being fired for one simple reason. It most likely means our new DC will be Lovie Smith or Monte Kiffin. Both of those guys are defensive gurus and it will lead to Dallas switching to a 4-3. A 4-3 suits their personnel better. If they hire one of the guys I named I might be excited for next year. Otherwise it'll more of the same---HUGE expectations, no results.

Well, I disagree with your assessment, but we've been around and around about this before. Jerry is the constant in almost 20 years of mediocrity. If you don't think he's the core problem, then okay--we'll just have to agree to disagree about that.
Given the news late last night that Dallas is probably switching back to a 4-3, the firing makes more sense to me. If they can get Kiffen of Lovie Smith, that would be interesting but there's probably going to be a rough transition to a Tampa-2.
