View Full Version : Crazy trip to the LCS and the story of 7 packs of 2012 Certified

So my buddy and I hit the local card shop today. I went in thinking I only had the money for 2 packs of something ($20). My friend starts opening a box of 2012 Certified. He opened 5 packs. In his 5 packs were these two hits

What in the world is this triangle material from?

And this Jersey Numbered 09/49 jumbo relic
http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy34/alexladue/New%20Sorting/Foles.jpg

So after those packs were out I said I wanted to open two packs and reached in and grabbed a pack and pulled some Jersey card of Dwayne Bowe, I later ended up trading off to the LCS for a 2010 Clinton Portis Mirror Gold #'d 24/25 and Prestige RC of David Wilson #'d 092/100 Holokote. My buddy says to me are you going to keep going and seemed a little pissed at this point and I said to him just one more pack for me and I'm done and reach in and pull this

Bam major mojo right? My first pulled Andrew Luck after opening tons of boxes this past year. I'm on cloud nine. I turned $20 into $150. Except one major problem. My friend is super pissed because I broke the card etiquette everyone knows except me....when someone is opening packs of a box don't open anything even if they say it's ok.

See believe it or not I got into this hobby just last year and really never got into opening wax. I seem to always lose when I open wax and have never pulled much of anything from anything except those very rare occasions I can remember (2011 Contenders case was good to me, Leaf Football box I got a Cam Newton and Julio Jones auto same box) but generally I've lost money on every single box I've ever opened. Even recently I opened a hot box and lost money on that too (had 9 hits but only supposed to have 4). I always lose money on busting wax so I generally avoid it at all costs and just trade singles.

So little did I know I was going to cause so much drama with my friend on those 2 packs of Certified. I felt awful because I hurt him and I wanted to make it right with him so I paid for all 7 packs we opened. Cool thing was I got to keep his 2 hits which I liked too but what started out as a 20 dollar trip turned into a 70 dollar trip so I wasn't extremely happy with that part but I pulled a luck so I couldn't be upset right? That's majo mojo! Except I can't ever stay on a budget when I go to a card shop, sigh.

So then my friend opened some more wax after that but generally seemed upset and I still felt awful about this so I traded him the Luck I pulled and got this one from him. I personally think it's a monster hit for me and one for the PC. After he got the Luck back that rightfully should have been his all along all was well in the world. He offered me that card in trade and was happy to get the Luck. I am happy with my card too. So my Luck landed me this one numbered Michael Jordan out of Junior Seau (23/55)

At the end of the day I realized my mistake and I made a voe today to never reach my hand into a box that someone else is opening packs from ever. I never want to take someone's card away and I never want to hurt anyone's feelings over cardboard. I learned a valuable lesson today and while it cost me $50 more dollars then I wanted to spend I only thought it right I did that. He's forgiven me and He and I are both happy how it turned out and that's what is the most important thing to me. Sometimes lessons can be expensive :)

Nice hits. I think the pack thing is a personal deal. I have split boxes and have pulled cards after someone said they are done then you pull a ncie card then they are ticked. It happens but you both are happy so that is the #1 thing.

Awesome pull and always fun to get a big hit. But no offense, if your friend was mad about it then you need a new friend to go the LCS with. He should have been happy it was you that pulled it instead of someone else walks in and buys a couple packs and walks out. Just because he is opening and did not say he wanted the rest of the box does not give him the right to open 1 at a time and pick the ones he wants before anyone else can buy from it. If he wanted 5 packs, he should have picked the 5 packs right away and let you have a chance to buy before he opens his.

Just my opinion, but glad all ended well.

Honestly I have given a Bryce Harper Auto to a friend because I felt bad for him. But still your friend was being a little bit of a whiner about it lol.

Doesn't sound like much of a friend to me...the guy needs to nut up and quit being a baby. He should have been happy that one of you two pulled the Luck!

Agree with this. I bet if the Luck was in the 1st pack he would have been just fine letting you open some packs from that box.

Don't go into a box that someone is opening from.

Look up the 2010 Pro Bowl jerseys. The bottom of them had a star pattern and that is what that Ware jersey is from.

I think you made out on the deal. That Tanny is sick. Any Luck from Panini is severely underperforming in the market right now. Especially a plain old jersey like that one. SV wise you are down, but that's a real nice patch.

I probably would have offered to buy the Tannehill with the profits from the Luck. You are way nicer than me. But then again, none of my friends collect.

Bingo haha, if your friend was done opening from that box, you have all rights to go at it. But if he was still opening, thats a big big no no.

Probably the time to say something is BEFORE he opens the packs though.

I agree that is part of LCS etiquette. But if you don't say something, then you've got to pout quietly.

Screw that you want "dibs" on the box, buy the whole damn box. Just because you bought a pack and might buy more doesn't give you rights to hold the box.

You want 5 packs buy 5 packs. This hobby has the most entitled people ever.

This. It's happened to everyone. Sometimes I can't afford a box, so I buy a few packs. That's it. If someone pulls a monster right after me (which has happened many times) I feel sick to my stomach, but I don't complain. You just compliment the person who pulled it and remind yourself to stick to singles or buy the whole box next time :-)

Dude shouldn't have been pouting and you had no reason to apologize or ask for forgiveness. It's called "luck." You had it. He didn't. Not your fault.

If he said "are you going to open one more"?, im sure he meant just that. Nice of you move the Luck, but once you did, did he repay you for the $70??? I sure would have. Sorry man, but Opening packs of cards is a gamble, and there is no rules as far as im concerned. What were you supposed to do? Tell the LCS owner to open another box so you could get a few packs???? I would love to see the owners face on that one.

Your friend is a cry baby.... if he was done he was done. I picked up a box once and was goin to buy it but then put it back, my best friend went and grabbed it off the shelf and pulled a luck auto (it was a prestige box) and i was really happy for him. I would have never got upset over that. I watched a guy open half a box of upperdeck this year and got mad cause he didnt pull anything so i grabbed 3 packs and pulled both autos including an RG3 auto. He got upset but everyone in the shop told him that it was his choice to quit opening and no one owed him anything. Thats just dumb that your friend acted that way. Thats selfish

It sort of depends on the circumstances. Did you grab those two packs after you saw the mediocre pulls he got? Did you ask him if he was finished opening packs from that box? That's the key, I think. That second question. If he was finished, you seriously didn't owe him anything. Not an apology, and not the Luck.

I have opened packs several times with members on here. Typically you ask if they are finished if they say yes and you start opening and hit a monster the previous breaker has nothing to say. But people get offended easily when they spent money on packs probably hitting nothing. Then watching a monster pull, they feel like they are owed something. I personally have left packs that someone has hit some nice cards. I was happy for them and they owe me nothing. You leave packs, thats it. Glad your happy how it worked out, your friend was being slightly annoying lol.

If you were dipping into the box while he was still opening, you're right, that's a no-no.

If he grabbed all five of the packs he wanted to open and THEN you got your packs, you should have told your friend to suck it up, buttercup. The other packs in the box are fair game for anybody whose got the scratch to rip them.

You paying for the packs and trading him the Luck is a nice gesture if you felt guilty, but it's akin to giving a baby a pacifier to keep her from crying. Like people said above, you should find a new friend to bust packs with if he got all butthurt over this...
