Just a quick status on the Auctions for the team break...

Auction ending times
All auctions are staggered 5 minutes after one another, beginning at 10 EST / 9 CST / 8 MST / 7 PST. Times listed are MST!! Any bid received and time stamped after the associated ending time will not be "accepted". If your computer is slow, or the website takes awhile to process - it's your loss for waiting so late!

Current Bid Status

ALL TEAMS HAVE BIDS!!

Current bid Total - $3,331

Don't forget that with 2 cases, you more than likely will not get the ol' "kick in the junk" that is possible with slot breaks.

For example, if you bid on the Blue Jays lot (currently $150) and the break is bad for Blue Jays - you'd probably still get at least 2 Snider, 2 Arencibia, & 2 Ahrens autos + several other autos & cards from the team. No, not necessarily the best return - but that doesn't include the fact you could get refractors, black refractors, etc and possibly 3 to 5 of autos of certain players. Isn't that what these breaks are about anyway - hoping for the non-regular hits? This way, you won't get a 20% return or less even in a bad break!

Anyway - links to auction site, rules & checklist:

Great question I received about the auctions:

since the auctions aren't set up like ebay what happens in a scenario like this.

lot is at $40 but i am willing to pay $60. if i bid $60 and no one else bids do i pay $60 or $41.

the reason i ask is because there are a couple of lots that i am willing to pay a significant amout of money for but don't want to pay $100s of $s more than the next highest bidder if i don't have to.

The bid would stand at $60. The main reason is that after you placed your bid of $60, you have eliminated all possibilities between the previous bid and yours. If somebody was willing to, and actually planned to bid $50...but didn't do it before your $60 bid, they could no longer do it.

Sometimes the blatant example is best. The Yankees lot is at $400. Somebody just knows Joba is coming up big in autos & duals! :D They could just bid $1,000,000 and they would automatically win at $401.

Having said that, the question/premise is excellent - we need to get on Marty about bring his website into the 21st century! Just kidding, I actually thinks it adds a completely different strategy to the bidding that we're all not used to.

TK,
That is why I think the final amount will take care of itself. Instead of being able to snipe at the last second you get feeler bids. That is where people will bid a few bucks more to get an idea and then get ready for their final bid. I have my eye on 4 auctions but we will see.

One quick question -what happens if you bid on a teamand there are no cards pulled of that team? I know its a slim possibility but it's still possible especially with Topps collation recently.

If that happened, I'd definitely pull something from my personal collection!

Having said that, with 2 cases...the only real possibility I see would be for the teams with no autos. Auto collation has been very strong, but the collation in the cases I opened for base rookies & prospects, and for relics has not been too great. Across several cases - I was fine. But each case definitely had some dupes in those 3 "areas" - rookies, prospects & relics.

Man - 1 second too late...

Can anybody tell me what the first 3 auctions ended at - including winners? My boys are all going nuts late at night and I missed the ending, and my e-mail is blocking all of the e-mails from Marty's site!

Is there a way to see the completed auctions on the site?

Thanks!

that's a little more than i was going to go but i don't think your price was too outrageous. you should get at least 3 vitters possibly 5. mix in a dual and some pie autos with a chance at a 1/1 or # to 25.

I probably won't break tomorrow since we're dependent on payments and I'll be getting my a$$ whipped at work starting at 7:00. Tuesday looks good though. BUT, if I get home relatively late, I'm thinking about 1 case Tuesday and 1 Wednesday...??!! I know that most of you probably can't handle that, but I'm just remembering that last year's took a few hours (and I probably won't get home until about 9:00 CST to begin with).

Could be fun to evaluate the first case results - who's hurting, who's smiling...then gear up for the second one.

Just a thought.

Same here. Our 7-month old decided the learn how to climb all over stuff and pull herself up to standing on things so I spent most of my day and night yesterday baby-proofing the house. This completely slipped my mind.

Have payment for about 2/3 of the teams & $...will plan on tomorrow night. Does anybody like the idea of 1 case tomorrow & 1 case Wednesday?

I know that goes against all of our inner beings of being a collector/ripper...but it could keep it from going 'til 3 am or so. Believe me, with 3 boys under 6 years old - I need my beauty sl.., err, rest.

I was working until 9...just have some people in from Boston that we're transitioning our business to, so had some down time before our mutual fund prices rolled in (in effect, we're double-staffed!).

Unfortunately, we have to wait until all the mutual fund companies (Fidelity, Vanguard, State Street, etc.) submit their prices to us, then we have to work our magic and turn around our final pension/401k numbers. The earliest I've been out the past year is 7:30. Thank goodness this business is moving to Boston so I can get more reasonable hours and eat dinner with my family during the week!!

Anyway, got off topic...need just a couple payments and we'll be good to go.

I know how you roll. You send out 15 invoices the minute after an auction ends along with threatening pictures of their family pet. This is all just to fuel your addiction to group breaks.
We know how it is.

You couldn't be more accurate. Hey, whatever works and to each his own. Can't blame me for being creatively persuasive can you?

So...when's the next group break? I have a few good auctions running right now if you'd like to win one or two Cubfan. :)!

TK,
Are you doing at least one case tonight? Sure hope you are and would like to know so I can look out for it.

If not everyone is paid by a set time you should put their teams up for grabs at the winning bid.

Still waiting on two payments.

One person posted that payment was sent, but it must have been sent to the wrong e-mail address because it never hit my PayPal account.

Anyway, I sent a PM this morning to let him know and that we're still waiting.

Hopefully both will make it soon.

I don't have a problem with going forward, but I know protocol (and good business sense!!) is to get all payments first...

I know it sounds harsh but I like it. I am not sure just how long this whole process is supposed to drag out. Next time we need to think about
A. Have the auctions end earlier if spacing them 5 minutes apart. Auctions ending after 12:30 east and 11:30 Central is way too late for some of us.
B. Ask for payment the day after auction ends. Once hte final value for each auction is declared everyone should know to go and see how much they owe if they do not know already and pay.

Those are my thoughts. I really do not want to sound critical but when you buy something at auction you like to know what it is. Unless you are into 3 day wait grab bags.

Agree - a few lessons learned for sure! I should have spelled out (a) probably break time, due date, etc.

And, yes - 11:30 is WAY too late for me as well. 3 young boys has a way of sapping your energy every day!!

Anyway, once the fun begins - nobody will worry! I absolutely LOVE the team breaks. You're never done until the last pack is ripped!

Cubfan....wife is Army?

I am in the Navy, but I spent the last 8 months with the Army in Fort Dix and Afghanistan.

Let's just say I am so thankful, I joined the Navy!!!! :)

I am sked to deploy again to Kuwait within the year, but if I don't promote to E-8 off the March selection board, I am throwing my retirement papers in to retire in December 2008 with 20 years, 6 months.

Thanks for the support at home. All the servicemembers appreciate the sacrifices you make so we can focus on the job at hand!

Okay...still waiting for one payment. I'm thinking about doing 3 packs at a time, then the A-Rod loader & Boxtopper after each box.

Sound decent?

Also, I'll plan to post in the following format. Obviously, each of the 5 cards per pack will be put in "where it goes". I'm basically going to populate an excel spreadsheet - then cut and paste to each post. Let me know what you think...

Okay - last payment should be in shortly.

By the way - I am still at work. Just the calm before our final storm/flurry of sending out Pension numbers.

Should get started around 9:00 CST. I'll be working to get the kids in bed immediately so there won't be any interruptions.

Grab some popcorn, a beer - and get ready...

She is a Major in the IL Army Natl Guard. I feel for you having to go over there. The army is one of the worst though because of the length of deployment. We are lucky she is only going to be gone a year. The Air Guard guys have it nice. 3 or 6 Month deploys.

Cubfan,

Thank you for your sacrifice. I have 3 boys. The youngest two are 1 and 2 years old. My sister lives just down the road from me, and she has 5 kids. Her husband, was in Iraq for 18 months, and I somewhat understand your sacrifice, and I just can't thank you and your wife enough.

I wish you and your family all the best and a speedy and safe return of you better half. :)

I know what you mean...

While my wife and I were both just as busy before our first was born - I always wonder what was so important back then? In all honesty, I really can't tell you (other than establishing a solid career, of course).

Everything is centered around them now, what could we have possibly been doing...?

Thank you. It has been hard but you gotta do what you gotta do. I know my wife is very homesick but I joke that on days like today she would rather be in the desert.
It was 64 degrees at lunch time here and 3 hours later it was 23 with a wind chill of 5 degrees and we were in the middle of an ice storm. It is now 10 outside with a wind chill of -3 and 40 mph winds. Gotta love Illinois weather.

Yeah, we are dealing with tornado spitting storms down in the Louisville area, and it's supposed to snow this weekend! Crazy weather

Okay - apologies for the delay - got hung up at work with an issue at the end of the night, but will be going full force pretty soon (5 minutes "ish").

Sorry for the delay, but my next post will be the first 3 packs from box 1!!! 2 out of 3 kids are asleep, and the oldest is settled in "mommy and daddy's bed", so he's probably not going anywhere.
