I recently just purchased a cut auto and im trying to figure out if I like them or not... what are your thoughts? and are they less desirable/valuable ?

Not for deceased players where that is the only option.
Otherwise, I say it is less valuable.

They are cool, as long as the subject of the auto is dead, or long time retired. Cut autos of active players or guys who sign a ton are absolutely rediculous.

Even with like current stars? so Example a guy like Aaron Rodgers...

Like said above, they are only cool if the player or person cannot sign anymore, but if it's a cut auto of a current player they are garbage IMO

I personally can't stand them. I think its very rare that they are done well. Either the auto is cut off or the scrap of paper that they got the auto from is cut so that it doesn't fit the window or they take the cut from another card or picture and its like you have two different cards crudely put together. I believe its the Walter Payton National Treasures cut a couple years ago with the phone card in it that illustrates my last example. I think it looks awful.
Obviously for some guys there is no other option, but I've never owned or really had the desire to own a cut auto.

I like them if they are from like checks or something. Those look really good IMO. The ones I hate to see is where they take an officially licensed one, say one off a postcard, a photo, or even another sportscard and insert them into a new product. To me that is like you are recycling an auto and destroying a collectible item. Plus, it just looks really cheesy to see an auto embedded in a card with the picture of like a leg behind it and nothing else (such as you get when its cut from a photo). And also as others have said, the cuts need to be of deceased players or at least those that are old and cant/wont sign autos anymore. Current player cut autos are stupid

I would rather the original full document or paper the auto came from. This is less important for lower end autos but when it comes to some of the non sports cut autos from leaf I think it is a disgraceful that they cut them from the original document. Like the presidental cut....why the hell would you cut George Washington's name from whatever paper he signed???

depends on the cut and the eye appeal...if its a cut from a baseball HOF plaque card, it drives me nuts because i know where it came from...if its a cut from the front page of a book and its nice and clean...thats fine. Just depends on each piece really. I don't really care for signed pics and cards that are cut up and made in to another card...but, thats just me.

Im a fan just like everyone else that posted. If the signer is dead or retired for a long time its cool. I did purchase a Michael Bay cut auto /10 only because I trusted this cut auto from upper deck rather than a signed photo that anyone could fake. So I guess it depends on how much you want the auto.

As others have stated, I'm only a fan of cuts that have the following traits:
Player does not have a pack certified auto
The cut includes a vast majority of a signature (ie no missing letters)
The cut fits well into the card design (I despise cuts where the signature is diagonal on the card)
Two of my own cuts:
Walter Hagen:

My nominee for funniest cut:

I'd prefer to keep the GLAC intact:

Check cuts are cool:

It's a shame to see existing pieces of memorabilia get hacked up for a cut auto. I see a lot of Goal Line Art cards, 8x10s, and even original hand-signed cards get torn up.
Checks, 3x5s and non-historical documents are ok with me re-use and put a nice card-type frame around. More often than not, I'd buy an item that's fully intact rather than a cut. Also, #'ed cuts feel a kinda artificial. I know Paul Brown wrote more checks than what Panini bought and put in 2010 Plates & Patches.

Cuts are great when there is little other way to get a card with the signer's auto on it.
What I don't understand is when a card company takes an already autographed card and cuts the auto out for a new "cut" card which sells for 2-3x what the original signed card sells for. Am I being punked?

what if the cut is from 2 different players and is a combo that you wouldnt see everyday? one is a current stud (hand down future HOF) and one is a hall o famer.... already!

Agreed and they have to been done right - either make the window bigger or the article the auto is on cut bigger to take up more of the window!

I am agreement that they really need to be done right. There are some that you can't help how they look as they may have very few. I try to get all my autographs with little to nothing cut off, but sometimes it can't be helped.
This is probably my favorite cut I own. It's a little cut off, but just how much they fit in there...wow:
