Which would you take?
Same player, same price. Gold Ref Auto or Elite Auto 1/1 for $225.

Most of the Black Status 1/1's are sticker. Here's mine:

Considering these responses, why does anyone crack EEE?

Is this for PC or investment. Pc it's easy 1/1 and then get gold another time.
I don't know the answer if its for investment but still think its the EEE.
Yes chrome is the better card but let's say you had trout in both 2 years ago which is worth more now? I don't know the answer but not sure it's easily chrome.

My personal opinion, but a gold refractor is extremely rare. Lets take boomos 50case break a few months back. That was a monster break, and really made me realize how rare it is to pull color of a player you collect. I've been in on 3 different 5 case breaks for Taylor ard chrome cards and have hit 0 golds, 0 oranges, 0 reds, 0 supers, 0 plates. I have hit several blues but for 15 cases, chasing one guy has been a nightmare. So, with the rarity of chrome color, it's no wonder why it's the most collectible set each year. It's also widely considered to be THE rookie card of a particular player.
As far as elite goes, you usually get a nice array of color, die cuts, and decent names. They are collectible and hold their place in the hobby because guys can pick up some of the autos for relatively cheap. I like elite, it's a fun break with a lot of brand new names and I like the design

I would take the 1/1. When it comes to reselling you are at a higher place of leverage since you have the only copy available. If someone wants it, they HAVE to pay your price. If you have a gold and someone doesn't like your price they move on to one of the other 49 copies.

A 1/1 is a heck of a lot rarer than a #/50.

Seriously guys?
An Elite Black Status 1/1 is likely 2x-4x more valuable than a Bowman Chrome Gold Auto no matter who the player is ... no matter how many autos they'e signed and no matter if it's on card or sticker.
Ty Hensley Black Status auto sold for $190 last night. Most recent Ty Hensley Gold Chrome auto sold for $53 at auction. For nearly everyone on this board to suggest they'd rather have a Gold Chrome auto is just ridiculous. Kudos to those who said Black 1/1. PLUS if Panini comes through with their license next year; expect Elite to increase in value over time.
*And I should say if the cards are valued the same ... tell me who it is and I will buy the Black Status 1/1 right now.

This has nothing to do with the question but lets say a chrome base auto goes for $30 and a base EEE auto of same person goes for $8. The player peeks in value where his chrome is now worth $75 and his EEE is now worth $24.
Which card would you originally want to invest in?
Those that write off EEE are crazy, sure maybe its not the best to break cases of but when investing in singles sometimes EEE is more profitable.

take the 1/1! If the player becomes a stud a gold will NOT outsell it. Take Trout for instance, his elite 1/1 is looking pretty damn good right about now.
Plus if the player becomes real good you can sell the 1/1 and buy multiple golds

That's relative though. True of any investment where when you risk more, you have more to gain.
EEE isn't always the cheaper option but to me it's just as good for long term value (LONG term).
1/1. It's a 1/1. You cant find another one.

IMHO, 1/1--much rarer and has another member pointed out so much more leverage from a resale perspective because you have the only one (all you need to do is find ONE person who wants it badly--granted, that may be hard depending on the player)

How's EEE riskier, same player. So maybe it takes a higher peak for EEE to go up in value. The most I can lose if guy is working at McDonald's in 3 years is $8 where I lose $30 buying his chrome right?
Take cards out of it I know this is your gig, just trying to understand what you mean.

How'd that turn out? Wait another 7 years and we'll take another look.
Also, why would the op be able to get the 1/1 and the gold for the same price if the 1/1 is more valuable? That right there tells you something.
I guess I'll stay "ridiculous."
How about a Leaf metal draft auto'd printing plate or a gold BC auto?

No no, I mean that when you compare Chrome to EEE, the variable is the same in the long term. However, you risk more in Chrome, to "receive" more. $30 chrome auto goes to $75 vs a $10 Elite auto that goes to $25 (both 250% increase in value). The "riskier" play is to buy the chrome auto; only because you can lose more.
And as I said Old Goldy ... show me any Elite 1/1 Black Status auto that is equal in price of a Gold Chrome auto and I will buy it in a second; I could care less the player. I can tell you that a Gold Aroldis Chapman 2010 Bowman Chrome auto sells for around $250 whereas the Black Status would easily get $750 - $1,000 if not more. And I wouldn't even have to bid on it!

Prob two different sellers, one of which doesn't know what he has. Any 2012 bum elite 1/1 sells for 80+ that same bums gold auto sells dirt cheap im sure. If they even have any

lol it's no question the 1/1 Elite auto out sells a gold auto of the same player. If the player becomes a stud, the elite 1/1 is worth a #@#@#@#@ ton. Gold's of studs usually fall around 800-1200 a pop, the elite 1/1's would see thousands.

I'd take a 1/1 over a card /50 any day. Only exception is if it's a crappy brand, but EEE does not qualify as that.

I see a bunch of the Elite 1/1's listed in this thread are graded. Do you guys just grade it for protection? The majority of these cards are really rough on the edges and don't grade really well.
