View Full Version : Team fans view things differently from Player fans...

OK, so there is no doubt in my mind that there are two types of fans when it comes to the NBA.

Team fans Fans that root for a team(s), regardless of the players they have.

and

Player fans Fans that root for a player or players, regardless of what team they play for.

Personally, I do not like it when people call me a "Lebron fan", I have NEVER been a "lebron fan".....I'm exclusively a Heat fan.

I root for the name on the front, not the back.

But it would be dismissive to say that I don't like Lebron....because I obviously do.

I just don't root for him in an individual basis.

Anyways, within these two fandoms, it's important to note that they are VERY different in the way they view things....

Team fans (for the most part) don't care about individual accomplishments unless it's from one of the players that play for the specific team they root for.....most of these fans are only interested in their respective teams and team oriented goals.

Player fans, mostly care about the players they root for and want them to succeed.....where they play isn't necessarily important. Some of them root for the teams their favorite player plays for, but their biggest allegiance is towards the player first, the team second.

I don't really like "Player Fans" most of them would rather have their favorite player drop a triple double than the team winning.

I'm a player fan because most NBA owners don't know how to manage. In most cases, they just blow up a good team or refuse to make moves.

The only that I would give respect to is Spurs.

I loathe player fans cuz all they do is latch on to the latest hot player instead of stick in there and wait for their team to succeed. It's so much more fulfilling when you know it can be decades before your team is successful. Man, that Colts Superbowl was godly. Pacers up next.

Agreed. Been a Knicks giants mets fan since before I can remember...root just as hard every year, good and bad. Nothing can describe how it feels for your team to finally break thru and win it all. Hopefully I get to feel that with the Knicks sometime :).
Ill be honest, player fans drive me crazy. Especially ones that go from good player to good player and rub in how good they are...when you are the one that has been hanging on every thread of a sometimes good, sometimes bad team. How hard is it to be a fan of a good player? Doesn't seem hard...
It's like people who are good player fans are fans of them just to be fans of the best. How lame is that? 'Oh I'm a Lebron fan, he's the best, your team sucks!!'
I'm over it!! That's why I respect campos!

Me? Spurs fan! Win/Lose/Sit players out!

But, I am also a player fan! I like Kobe, Lebron, Melo, Kyrie etc etc! I just love to watch the greats do what they do! As long as they don't do it when they are playing the Spurs!

In some cases it's bad but when you see talent like Lebron or Kobe I think everyone is a fan?

i have been a Heat 'Team' fan since about '02, ive also been a big lebron fan since 03 because i just love watching the greats play.
you would think id be in heaven now with the big 3 in Miami, but honestly, i get tired of having to justify myself everytime someone asks me who i go for, i get tired of been called a bandwagon fan even though i was a fan years before The heats 1st ring with shaq and wade.
and also, this may seem weird, but been the best is kind of a little boring! i expect the Heat to make the playoffs with home court advantage, so honestly i havent even been watching them all that closely this year! i have been more intriqued by other stories, like Brooklyn trying to make a name for them self, Clippers finally having some success, and lately the lakers, fighting for there lives for that 8th spot. this has all been very entertaining!
Honestly as weird as it sounds...i feel like im almost ready to actually jumping off the Heat 'bandwagon' despite the fact were in the middle of a time period that will go down in heat and NBA history! but were would i go if i didnt support the heat?! i lay sleepless at night sometimes thinking about my first world problems.

Of all the 4 major American professional sports basketball is the most individualized and the nba knows this and markets its stars not teams. I live in Atlanta and attend a lot of hawks games but I am mainly a player fan. Pretty much whoever signs autographs before games I cheer for and whatever ballplayer acts like a jerk to the fans I boo the hell out of him. Nothing wrong with being either a player or team fan it's a matter of personal prefrence.

I agree with this mans principle on the subject....people just latch on to whoever is the hottest player...

I enjoy watching some players play because I respect their talent...

I'm a "fan" of one team and the players on that team - while they are on my team.

Hence why I don't get bent out of shape (as I know this thread was derived off the sitting players thread) if players don't play.

If my team won I could care less who played for either team. I'd be disappointed perhaps if the other players "star" didn't play - but I'm not rooting for them, I'm rooting for my team, if I don't get to see that person then so be it.

exactly. When MJ was playing, I hated the Bulls but I loved to watch them play. I would just always root against them LOL. Same for Heat & Lakers.

I'm just a fan of the NBA game.

Me as well. I also enjoy watching certain players play. I have grown up most of my life in Birmingham, AL where they don't give a crap about basketball so I never really latched on to a specific team. I was a Bulls fan back in the 90's mostly because I idolized Michael Jordan and was amazed at how dominant he was. Those Bulls teams were a joy to watch for me so I rooted for them. Now, if I had grown up in Atlanta, or New York, or another bigger city somewhere my mindset would probably be different.

it is sad when player fans could care less about what actually happens with the team. all they care about is the stats their player puts up

I am a fan of the game, I don't like overrated players. I love underdog teams. The ones that play with heart.

Fantasy Sports world we live in (and to a lesser extent collectors since we are all on this board)

I'd rather the Browns win and Trent Richardson rush for 0 yards then I would him go of for 250 yards - which might help in Fantasy or a bump in card value - if it meant the Browns lose.

I tend to be more of a player fan. But only 3 players. Durant, Harden, Curry.
