Violation of the NFL's PED policy

Here's the statement from the #NFL on the Bruce Irvin suspension:

Bruce Irvin of the Seattle Seahawks has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2013 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.

Irvin will be eligible to return to the Seahawks' active roster on Monday, September 30 following the team's September 29 game against the Houston Texans.

Irvin is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

If he is suspended because of Adderall - as the twitter link suggests - he should get an 8 game suspension for being a flat out moron. How do you get suspended for something 2 of your teammates (if I recall Sherman was able to talk his way out of it - but we know he did it) did last year?

I'd say the same if a Cleveland Browns player got suspended for Adderall this year - give him 8 games - if he didn't learn from Joe Haden.

You should get the regular 4 games and then the additional idiot 4 games.

This is the 5th or 6th player since 2011 that has been suspended for Adderall on the Seahawks now.

This has to be the dumbest drug to get suspended for. I mean Adderall is one of the EASIEST drugs to get a prescription for. Why don't these idiots just go through the proper means. Adderall with a script is legal in the NFL

I don't think they need him, they have a loaded defense. They can win 3 of those first 4 games. I'll go ahead and say they won't win week 2.

Huh?

Ok everyone should know what Adderall is...it's legal Speed. It's primary use is for patients with ADHD and narcolepsy (sleep disorder).

For anyone who's ever been through the ADHD process there are some tests to take to be diagnosed this, then to get a prescription it requires a triplicate script that is monitored and tracked by the Feds. If a doctor illegally prescribed Adderall and handed it out like candy they could very easily lose there license and practice. This is a class 2 drug...another class 2 drug...cocaine. To say getting Adderall is easy is simply not true.

Here's what some of you don't get...Adderall is highly abused because it's just a small little pill. We pop small little pills all the time when we have headaches or don't feel well. Not a big deal. The problem here is Adderall simply doesn't carry the same reputation as other amphetamine drugs like Meth and Coke. Someone might not smoke something or put it up the nose but they would take a small little pill instead. That's the problem with Adderall effecting NFL players. They simply don't look at it the same as those other drugs but the NFL does

Now here is the other thing people might not know. The NFL piss test only senses that amphetamines were in the urine. Its probable and likely that some of these players may claim they took Adderall instead of admitting to steroid use since admitting they were on steroids would be unpopular. That's my own suspicion as to why so many players are being busted for Adderall these days

Its pretty easy actually. My friend walked into a doctors office got an appointment with the doc.. Told him he used to have an adderall prescription and the doc charged him 150 and sent him on his way with a script

I think you understimate just how easy drugs are to get. For example I could go to the doctor right now, say that I have a flight coming up and im terrified and I would have a prescription for xanax within about 20 minutes. Adderall is all over college campuses and it's not hard to get AT ALL

Yea it's a different generation we live in now. These drugs are very easy to come by. Just because it's a schedule II narcotic doesn't necessarily mean it's regulated like one all across the board. Some doctors just don't care and some really do. People who want drugs can find out which doctors to go to for prescriptions they want. I know it's not difficult at all where I live. But I also live by a college campus.

well considering 2 other seahawks that were caught admitted they were taking aderall and both have or will be serving 4 game suspensions now.. but Sherman nope.. and he came back and had his best games of the season after the false positive.. so yeah I can believe Sherman wasn't taking anything.

I wouldn't say that. His performance was pretty level the whole season.

Sherman got off on a technicality. IMHO, he fought it because the Seahawks couldn't afford to have Browner and Sherman out at the same time. Worst case, when Browner came back, Sherman was out for 4. Best case, something breaks and he gets off. He got off because they "mishandled" his sample.

So this guy gets suspended and also had the age issue coming into the combine and draft. Was he 23? 26? They found out he was 26. It was weird I was looking at his profile on different sites and see 23 on a few and then 26 on NFL.

Carroll may be a lot of things, but someone that can be labeled as convincing grown men to take a banned substance? Those calling Petey out on this may be giving him too much credit.

Irvin f'ed up, he knew it, and now everyone knows it. I actually will put a dab of respect back in his column for passing up the appeal process and taking his punishment. Onward and upward.

Go Colts.

To say that the HC can't perpetuate an environment where performance at any cost is accepted is simply stupid.

In the past 3 years, the Seahawks have had a meteoric rise in the NFL's pecking order in large part due to significant contributions from young players drafted not just in early rounds but throughout the draft. I think it's time to start questioning the methods that are being used to achieve the results.

I wish the NFL would scrutinize teams and not just players when it comes to substance abuse issues. 1 guy that pops positive might be an isolated case but when it becomes 3 or more then I think the team should receive a punishment.

When individual players are punished, it really doesn't hurt the team THAT much so there isn't much incentive for the team to self-discipline.

In August of 2006, USC defensive back Brandon Ting quit the football team after testing postive for steroid use. His twin brother, Ryan, also a defensive back on the USC football team, quit the team just days later, claiming that he wanted to concentrate on preparing for medical school, and was never tested. Interestingly, Arthur Ting, father of the twins, is a Bay Area orthopedic surgeon who has reportedly appeared as a witness before a grand jury considering possible perjury charges against baseball's Barry Bonds, one of Arthur's clients. This incident finally triggered some real interest by the LA Times.

To say that the HC can't perpetuate an environment where performance at any cost is accepted is simply stupid.

My point in a nutshell. Grown men we are talking about, not sheep. They choose what they put in their body. Carroll is as much as fault as the person/company that made the pill. Tell me Pete handed out the pills with a pen and a contract and I am with you. Accountability. Nobody's fault here but Irvin. Saying this is Carroll's fault to me is stupid.

Divisive issue obviously. Run down the list of players tagged for PED's, and the head coaches they played under. Names on this list will be names much more revered than that of Pete Carroll, which was my only point, not on the coach, on the player.

Pete Carroll, USC and Scandal (2nd Update) - Bruins Nation (http://www.bruinsnation.com/2006/6/26/113925/426)

Thanks for the clarity. Believe me, I am not a Petey Appologist, far from it. I just have a hard time not believing the responsibility begins and ends with the player.

Some coaches may be better than others at creating an environment where this doesn't happen. He is not one of the one that is good at it, still doesn't make it his fault.

Odd that I am defending the guy here, don't like him, at all. Personal accountability, seems like a ship lost at sea these days. Irvin actually acknowledged it was on him, yet people line up to blame someone else. If Irvin can accept the responsibility, why can't others?

Did Irvin screw up, yeah he did. But heck he owned up to it more than others would have. He tweeted after ESPN released it saying it was a mistake. Heck I have seen about 150+ WVU Fans that I know turn their back on Irvin (besides me). It bugs me that over a stupid mistake people turn their back on a player and start saying stupid crap.. Heck I turned off ESPN because the female anchor started talking crap saying Way to blow your chance Bruce being a smart alec. I kept this clean because if I posted what I wanted to I would be banned.......Still Bruce's biggest fan (even though I had to sell alot of my Irvin stuff), Still support him, and Still think he will be the next big player!
