People tend to be pretty scummy, at least many are. But I'll be devil's advocate here. Upper Deck as a for-profit company will never do anything that didn't somehow benefit their personal gain.

If there wasn't valuable PR involved, these Hoffman cards never exist. It's the way of the world: capitalism, business, survival of the fittest, etc.

^I kind of agree......so a authorized version for personal gain (company PR = profit) is okay but an unauthorized version is not.... sure UD, you're clearly the good guys here.

They technically caused this, so the blood is on their hands IMO.

But it is kind of sickening there is so much scum out there, especially in this hobby...color me not surprised this happened.

Upper Deck helps creates this atmosphere and then wants to be labeled the good guy...

Everyone taking advantage should be ashamed from the bottom right to the top...

Now they know how we feel with the Stupid a$$ Non Paying Bidders on ebay!! "Someone logged into my account and bid as a joke". Yea right guy. Who is stupid enough to believe that crap. Ebay really needs to crack down on these Non Payer. Its getting out of control because people know ebay will do nothing. I have never not paid for an item that I have won.

If people expected that to get paid for, they really need to get tested.

UD wasn't doing any of this for profit, plus they were selling the cards for Charity.

The people being remoras on it are pretty freaking low.

Guy on the Yahoo article has no clue about the sports card market.

Hopefully in a few years it will be worth 10 times that amount and this guy will kick himself for rest of his life for not buying it.

Say what you want but they started this mess, if they really just wanted to help why not just donate some money?

Or if they just wanted to bring awareness to this why not just have the cards made and pack insert them?

I liked the story but it is got overplayed and now drug through the mud for what 6,000.... what is that 3 cases worth of exquisite or less? They should have just donated some cash.

It was great idea that was terribly executed..... brings to mind the saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" that's all I was trying to say... they made the mess now they should clean it up.

Another reason why ebay should let sellers leave negs to NPBs

Edit-oops I thought this was about the npb

If they had donated the cash then it would have came out of their own pocket. The way they did it the money came out of a customer's pocket.

This is what they get for using eBay versus a real auction house with rules and actual customers. eBay has become a joke for auctions due to the fact sellers cannot leave actual feedback, they cannot block a 0 bidder automatically and there is little to no reprocussion for not paying for an item.

Maybe thats their intention, to do away slowly with auctions..

I realize not everyone has business experience but come on, not directly pocketing money from this doesn't mean it wasn't done for personal gain. The mainstream PR for this has been off the charts, it has been years since Upper Deck was so prominently in the spotlight in the mainstream sports media.

That was exactly what they were after, and they got millions in free advertising for it. It's the same reason why they created a custom trading card for Michael Jordan's wedding. It's all done for publicity.
