Hey everyone. The question is simple...okay maybe not... What should the Celtics do this offseason? This one of the teams with the most question marks going into next season. Do they keep the core together? Do they blow it up? Wo should they draft?

IMO they have to go in one of two extremes. Either blow it ALL up, which includes trading Rondo and Green, or keep Pierce with the possibility of dealing him at the deadline. I think there is a lot of benefit in this league of having an expiring contract, and with the retirement rules the way they are (in terms of salary cap impact) buying out Pierce and letting KG walk doesn't free up much money. If they get rid of those two they are still better than Milwaukee with Rondo, Green, Sullinger, Bradley, etc. so they are too good to rebuild quickly. If they let Pierce mature off the books naturally they don't have to take on any contracts in a return trade and they have a product they can sell for next year. I think the people that want to trade Pierce to rebuild forget the money has to match, which means you either take on a bad contract to get a late first roung pick, or you pick up a ghost contract that still impacts your salary cap ala Keith Van Horn at the end of his career. The same goes for trading Rondo and Green. They both make 10+ million next year, so it is either a sign and trade for a max player or you take on bad contracts to get draft picks/ young players with potential.
I personally would like to see Pierce stick it out, but it is not his option at this point, and I do think having him around hurts Jeff Green's development if they believe he is capable of taking the next step.

My personal opinion is to either trade pierce and kg together to a contender but only if you get good young players in return. Otherwise I would stay put and waive Jason terry and maybe dish some bench players. I think they can hold kg and pierce another season and still compete as long as they strengthen their bench offensively and no star players get hurt. I think they could have beaten the Knicks if they had rondo in the post season. Pierce wouldn't be over worked and wouldn't bring up the ball and could do all of his good things. Turnovers would be cut down and Bradley could go to shooting guard and their bench would be rock solid with green as the sixth man! That's my opinion. Stay put unless something great comes, dish the old bench guys (Jason terry) and get younger on the bench and hope that their rookie steps up, and sully comes back strong (along with rondo) and maybe fab Melo can develop into a good big man(could learn from kg)

I really don't want to see them lose green, bradley, or Sullinger, even though those are the only guys with much value other than rondo. I wouldn't mind if pierce didn't come back, but I would much rather him retire than go to another team. On the other hand, I would like to see garnett return for another year just to be a leader for some of the younger guys.

Would be nice for the Feltics to keep the young talent they have. I really would love to see Pierce retire a Celtic...what drat picks do they have this year? Can they even get any solid role players?

I would pass on Smith. He wants a max contract I have heard. He is not worth that much. I think on a championship caliber team he can be no better than a third option. He still falls in love with shooting threes and long twos. He is a good defender but not worth a max.

Blowing it up rarely makes sense to me. I think they reshuffle some pieces and try and keep the core together for one more year. Frontline depth is a must.

One pick in the draft, which would be around the 16th or 17th pick, I believe.
Here is a list of the salaries (http://hoopshype.com/salaries/boston.htm)
Not a Celtics fan, but they seem to be at the point of drafting the best big man available unless they move Pierce and/or Green/Terry, then a scoring wing is a must and they would most likely acquire a big man in free agency.

I say the Celtics give it one more try with this group. I would let Paul Pierce be the 6th man of the team. My starters would be
PG - Rondo SG - Bradley SF Green PF Garnett C ?? ( explore a trade maybe involving Crawford/Bass or Lee
A bench consisting of Pierce, Terry and Sullinger would be good. The C's need to get a back up pg via trade or draft. I think the key would be convincing Pierce to come of the bench and getting some decent center to help out KG.
bdoody42
05-31-2013, 08:28 PM
As of now. I would start the following.not saying it is great but is best option I think.
PG-Rondo.
SG- Bradley
SF- Pierce
PF- Green
C- Garnett.
The lineup is small but can spread the floor pretty well. I would love for them to get a real center!!!

I agree with that line up but I'm concern about KG playing center. IMO they should stop playing small ball and play more traditional basketball with a real center. They should follow the Spurs. Their headed to the Nba finals and have Tim Duncan, Parker and Ginobilli as their main core surrounded with ( Green, Leonard and Splitter).

Um, sure. Likely? no. Ideally they need to dump Pierce. If they keep Pierce, they can hope Utah likes Jason Terry, Brandon Bass or Courtney Lee, actually 2 of them, Bradley and picks.
Possible Big Al takes less to get back, but I doubt it.

Doc Rivers is really disappointing me if this is true. He is being a giant hypocrite. Why the f*ck did he sign the contract when he knew full well what was coming.

I think they should trade KG and Doc plus maybe Terry or Lee and get Deandre Jordan and Bledsoe plus the 2 first round pick. They should keep Paul Pierce for the remainder of his contract (his been the face of the franchise for almost a decade now). Try to flip maybe Bledsoe or Rondo for another star and call it a day. They can probably trade Bledsoe for Millsap. At this point who knows what Danny Ainge is thinking.

"If you think those would now -- at this point, having been all over the media for week for the last week or so -- are separate transactions...I have a bridge in Brooklyn that I would very much enjoy selling to you," Stern said.
"What the rules won’t allow, it can’t be gotten around by breaking it up into two transactions."

Sounds like he wanted a bit more say in player decisions. Was not going to get that with Ainge. I don't blame him for leaving but not sure that situation in LA is all it seems to be, especially with them not able to get KG now.

Celtics will not be tanking for the #1 pick. They may take a step back and end in the lottery but they would have to gut the roster too deep to have a legit shot at Wiggins. Also ownership would not sign off on giving up 4000+ season ticket holders for the next 3-4 years. Too much risk.

Draft picks, expiring contracts or TPE's are the priority. Young players with potential like Jordan or Bledsoe also fit the bill. Basically assets they can flip now or in a year or two for the next All-Star quality player.

God I wish they never traded Brooks... Maybe it's because I'm a PC fan, but that would have been nice to have some scoring punch off the bench a couple years ago. Either way, he would have worked out better than JaJuan Johnson.
I think Danny is going to explore all avenues. He wants 1st round picks, but who knows what will end up happening. It sounds like the NBA isn't going to let KG end up in LA, so I wouldn't write any option off. I also feel like there is more urgency to trade him vs trading Pierce. I think KG is less likely to come back, play half the season and then get traded at the deadline, like they will do with Pierce. KG may just retire.
IamRalpho
06-26-2013, 10:11 AM
The Nets have absolutely nothing I would want for KG. Marshon Brooks is borderline bust now and would be a throw in to a deal, not something you lead with.
Even if the Celts keep both, they have more value at the deadline when teams overpay more for veterans/expiring deals.
I really have no idea which way they go, but I would like to get some prospects and not a lot of picks, Ainge hasnt had the best track record with picks.

Yup. I would say I am not impressed at all with Fab Melo. I would say out of the summer league so far the top 5 celtics in no particular order have to be
Pressey(great d, fast, good ball handler)
Olynyk(dominant on the offensive end, good at rebounding, can steal we'll for a big man)
Colton Iverson(good tough player, not flashy but plays hard and helps out)
Tony Mitchell (athletic, good shooter, very good defender)
Courtney Fells(very good shooter, reliable on d, plays smart, doesn't make the wrong play)
Is there anyone else? Djo had one good game but he doesn't impress me. Abromitus is a good shooter(kyle korver similar.). Granger is alright.
