View Full Version : Your All-Time Starting 5

Shout out to JOHNJOHNNY for the Dynamic Duo Thread. It got me thinking about what my all-time starting 5 would look like. Here it is (keep in mind I was born in 1988 :)!)

PG - Magic
SG - Jordan
SF - Kobe
PF - LeBron
C - Shaq

Coach: Phil Jackson

Thought process:

PG: Even though I didnt get to watch Magic play, I know that he is the greatest PG of all time.
Also considered: Stockton, Kidd, Nash

SG/SF:There was no way I was leaving MJ or Kobe out of it. I started watching basketball during MJ's 1st 3-peat, watched the 2nd, and then Kobe filled the void Mike left behind. They are the 2 wing men that can both be considered SG's on this team, it doesn't matter.
Also considered: Bird, Pippen, T-Mac, Durant

PF: I chose LeBron over all the great PF's in history for a few reasons. One, he's LeBron and the SF position was filled by my favorite player. I think he is capable of guarding nearly anyone in NBA history (minus a few centers). Plus, a starting 5 with MJ, Kobe, and LeBron; who could resist?
Also considered: Barkley, Malone, Duncan

C: The Diesel was an easy chocie for me. Russell and Wilt may be most people's choices here, but Shaq's dominant physical presence is unrivaled. The guy was a monster.
Also considered: Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem

Coach: He's the Zen Master and he has 11 Championships. (drops the mic)

I left a lot of guys of the list and even my considerations. I had to keep it short and sweet.

no way I dont have bird as my starting SF

PG - Magic
SG - Jordan
SF - Bird
PF - Lebron (assuming you can put him here) otherwise Duncan
C - Russell

I also wouldn't be mad having Lebron be PG either

C - Wilt Chamberlain
PF - Bill Russell
SF - Larry Bird
SG - Jerry West
PG - Oscar Robertson

We can't all have Jordan :)

Well here's my REAL starting 5... Also, this will be comprised of players i watched personally so late 80's-present.

PG - Gary Payton
SG - Michael Jordan
SF - Scottie Pippen
PF - Tim Duncan
C - Shaquille O'Neal

Lebron is not a power forward, Kobe is not a point guard. My SF choice was real close between Pippen and LeBron. While Lebron is vastly more talented offensively, Pippen was a great defender and facilitator. Center was also close for me. David Robinson was really underappreciated, i think. He was a great scorer. Shaq was so dominant though... Kobe was definitely the next best SG, but Jordan is Jordan and Kobe will never had/will have Jordan's intangibles... Neitehr will Lebron for what it's worth.

I would personally have Stockton over Magic. I think Magic was the better PG, but he would succeed best with role players (good shooters, players who mostly run the floor and don't iso as much) which players like MJ, Lebron, and Shaq are not.

Coach - Does it matters?

Stockton
MJ
Bird
Duncan
Russell

I have 2 people can shoot 3s. All 5 can play defense. All 5 can play with injury. Stockton and Duncan can run pick and roll all day. Duncan has mid range without crowding Russell in the middle. Most importantly, I only have MJ with ego problem.

i'm fascinated by all of the posters who put bill russell at power forward. so bizarre

It's not my question but I would assume you would put a player in the position he played in ala no Lebron at PF etc.

Not really. I think he'd work perfectly playing help defense alongside someone like Wilt Chamberlain or Shaquille O'Neal.

Also, when your team already has the likes of Bird, Oscar, etc. then offense isn't really needed.

It's a Fantasy starting lineup so you could do whatever you like. Also, if I'm not mistaken, LeBron has played the 4from time to time, and guarded 4's like David West currently....
