View Full Version : Anyone else run into a string of bad buyers on eBay?

Lot's of lies and deceit buy buyers these days, as this hobby continues to transform into a world of business/gambling/manipulation/etc.

It's just so frustrating as a seller, because a buyer has so much leverage. They can simply refuse to pay, you send a NPB case and either they don't pay, or they do pay then you are at the liberty of them A) refusing delivery, B) claiming the package is empty, C) saying item was/is damaged, D) leaving negative feedback, D), E)..., F),,,, etcccc!

What good does a NPB strike do these days? Seems like buyers can have HUNDREDS?!

Can't leave negative feedback for buyers .... WHY again?!

It seems as though MANY buyers these days are extremely abusive of the system and use loopholes to gain leverage/$$$ over sellers.

I know people usually focus on the illegitimacy of some sellers .... *MANY* buyers are just as bad if not worse!!!

Sorry, just had to vent ... just sick of the whole "buyer" leverage thing with eBay!

in reality people are using ebay for the same reason as those type of buyers, to turn it into a money situation, people aren't really just collecting & taking a loss on stuff, they are flipping everything, so you run into alot of issues. it really takes the fun out of things when buyers do this, because you get cards and kinda wait around for a good time to sell them and just get ripped, it really sucks. I mainly just like to pick up cool cards I like now, not really going hard with selling/flipping it's one big headache.

Especially with sportscards, because you have players/teams that get "hot"

When Kobe goes for 81pts, his cards skyrocket for the next week or so.

When Kyrie scores 36, his card values go through the roof for the next few weeks.

When the Heat won the finals, all of their players' cards go through the roof.

Then you have a ton of buyers buying and not paying, sellers have to re-list when values eventually tank/cool off again. I think many buyers do this to protect themselves. IE: A card shows up that they want, but the hype around the player/team will make the card value go HIGH. So they win with no intent to pay on a throw-away account. Then 30+ days later the card is re-listed and they can try to win it for cheaper...

I understand that the economy is tough and people are trying to save/make money in any situation possible.

But eBay is really the guilty party here, allowing this all to go on ... why? Because they simply want to pull in as much fee $$$ as possible and retain as many "buyers" as possible because there will ALWAYS be sellers around!

I just started turning on the default bidder restrictions. X number of NPB strikes, X number of negatives, etc. I had 25 auctions end Wednesday night and I had 23 paid by the time I woke up Thursday morning and one paid yesterday afternoon, just one left to pay.

Every time a buyer files a Paypal chargeback, they should get a negative and all sellers should be able to details about the claim..

Either that, or limit the number of chargebacks a person can file in a year to maybe 2 or 3.

E-bay protects the buyer no matter what. That gives more incentive for some to rip off and if they choose not to pay its no big deal.

I was done late last year not worth it anymore , to many people looking into this hobby as an investment .

With what's the best player as an investment ?

What case can i rake it back on ?

Look at me i bought this for $XXXX and killed someone on a sale with $xxxxxxxxx !

Desperate people start manipulating systems, looking for loopholes , faking patches etc..... apart from the true collectors the hobby has become a sess pool of investors and shady ones with no bussiness sense at that littering the hobby .

What did people think would happen only they would rake it and flaunt it on forums etc...

It make others look and go well if he can do it so can i and guess what boom next thing you know it's like a disease everyone is now an investor/prospector hyping not paying on auctions and just being pain's in the rear end .

So what do people expect?

So now Enjoy it as it will only get worse and bad luck at the same time and sorry to say but i don't feel one ounce of sorriness as it was brought on this hobby by the so called smart ones that thought they where the only ones that had the capacity to turn this hobby into a business when anyone in there right mind could do so but for me this was alway's just to collect not about the money !!

I have had an issue with SELLERS as of late.
I do not use payapl which I make very clear in an email before I ever bid just to make sure I don't run into an issue.
I bought and item recently and asked several times for the guys address and he ignored me.
Then he sent me a bunch of bs emails about how I was a crook???
I got dinged with a NPB thing which does affect me since ppl won't allow me to bid on their items. Over 50+ feedback as a buyer and 8 FB as a seller and I deal with this crap.
I was in AZ for business and he lived 5ish min from my house. I offered to pay cash and even pick it up or meet him at QT.
Meh anyways I am done ranting.

For some people, they think spending 40 hours on ebay to find a steal is like winning the lottery. In fact, those 40 hours can be easily used to more money.

I consigned some of my last cards with someone I trust to sell on ebay for me, seems like only one person didn't pay (though he filed non-payment claims within 48 hours) and one person from Asia filed a non-receipt claim within just a few days...
From what I'm aware you can block people who have 2-3 or more NPB strikes from bidding on your items?
I remember when a NPB used to be a serious threat... like you were gonna get banned if you got another one. Times sure have changed...

With all due respect I would not want you as a buyer either if you are unable or unwilling to use paypal. The transaction is so much easier and protected for the seller when the buyer uses Paypal. Folks like you would be dinging DSR's when they paid by check and did not have their cards in 4-6 days (forget the fact it takes a week or more for a check to clear). In the early days of Ebay I got stuck with several NSF checks which cost me $25+ each.

I don't think that's the case. All the seller has to do is click "payment received" once the MO comes in. From that point they could still update the DC within 24 hours to save the shipping time star. There is also no fear of chargebacks or paypal holds, and no extra paypal fees.

Technically the buyer could still leave a neg or neutral, but they could do that with paypal as well.

Checks are much different then money orders/certified cashiers checks.
I always send a copy of the receipt with the money order(s).
I can cash a cashiers check the day I get it at the issuing bank even if I don't bank at that bank. If its a fake you will know instantly and your protected. The payment options I offer since I do not use paypal take 3 days MAX to clear and can be verified by the issuing institution.
The best option is WU wire. Cash in hand within 30 minutes.

I always ask before I bid if they would allow these options to avoid any issues (out of the 50+ transactions I have never had anyone tell me no) and I also clearly state I understand these things need to clear and I do not mind the longer shipping time and DO NOT expect anything to ship until it does clear. I am not the type of guy who needs it now esp since the majority of the cards I buy sit in my office for 1-3 weeks since I travel a ton for business.
I simply just ask that they send me a tracking when they can and keep me up to date.
This is all laid out before the transaction takes place which is why the above pissed me off. The guy said he would take a money order then told me to eat crow. I even offered to drive it to him or meet him in a public place.
If you did not want to deal with me then just say so!

My ebay feedback also speaks volumes.

As a former seller who was taken for 25k I realize paypal is a joke and would not touch them with a 1000000 ft pole.
Just wait until someone with a CC does a chargeback and see how well your delivery confirmation, tracking, sig, and insurance hold up. Paypal won't take the hit trust me.

Hit and Miss with me... I guess I don't sell super high end stuff so not risking a ton, but for a collector on a budget it sure stinks to deal with issues and possibly be jipped out of some $$/Time

Your right about this, happened to me couple years ago with a sale just under 1k. had a charge back on PayPal, they asked for scans on delivery confirmation even though sale was done over 2 months earlier and feedback was left from buyer! Lucky for me, I had rcpt in draw with couple other sales, but imagine I didn't....

That is just the start!!
They then hit you with "Account Limited" or "Account Frozen".
That leads to a huge cluster &&&&. There goes your feedback and rep as a seller. Over 2000 transactions with no issue and then one day boom its all over.

This is exactly what I've been noticing too..I am about to just refund this SOB because I know he is gonna leave me a NEG when he gets the card/and or if he says he did...

About a month ago I got so fed up I stopped all my auctions/BIN because I lost more money to a person who said they never got the card...It was after a run of like 4 people in a row who said they didn't get their stuff..

I lost it and wrote ebay that I was never gonna use them again and this and that...

I went crawling back a little wiser, but it all starting to mount up again...the little things that can drive you nuts ya know...

Definatley running out of the stuff I want to get rid of and been holding off on crackin wax so slowly getting on track with a different lifestyle when it comes to card collecting...

but who knows what the future holds...I feel for you though OP

You won't need to deal with these buyers and chargebacks. One of the reasons I like to send my cards there so I don't need to worry about these problems

Without reading any of this thread, it just baffles me that people would bid on something and not pay. Of course, I still view this as a hobby, and I don't bid on cards that I don't want for my collection.

I consign all my tuff through someone else---best 10% I ever paid. He has all the headaches.

Got to admit, thinking of trying COMC to get rid of my lesser value cards.
