One of my weightlifting buddies saw where I had posted a sports cards related status on Facebook, and mentioned to me that his grandpa was selling off his basketball card collection. I asked him how much, and he said $600 for everything. Not what I wanted to hear. So I asked him if he would sell singles, and he said sure. So tonight after we left the gym, I followed him home. Most of the collection was 90's junk, as he said one guy had done bought all of his newer stuff and football cards. I had a hand full picked out, and asked him if he had anything else left of vintage basketball, and he handed me a shoebox. Most of them were commons, but were in absolutely beautiful condition. I thought it was a strike out until... these cards. They are in perfect condition except for some centering issues, and the Serving looks faded in bright light. I asked him if he knew what they were worth, and he said the smile on my face was enough for him. I paid, not as much as I should have or wanted to... but these aren't going anywhere. Ever.

Are they real?

I have no reason to believe they're not. They look and feel like the real thing. The only coloring issue is on the Erving , a small spot in the yellow

Post them in the vintage area to get some info. They don't quite look right to me.

I'd love to be optomistic for ya on these, but my honest opinion is that they're all reprints.

What are the odds of having these rookie cards, from a vast range of years, all in MINT condition? Not very high.

I'm not saying it's not possible, just very unlikely.

I hope they're real though! Good luck!

The Russell looks a little too dark/bold/vibrant, and the border a touch narrow for my liking.

Hope they are real, that would be awesome. Even if you are going to keep them forever it's worth getting them graded so they're protected and you'll know if they're definitely real.

Sorry to tell you this, but those are almost definitely reprints. The Russell and Maravich are way to bright for when they were made, and the Dr J doesn't really look like a reprint to me, but just judging from the others, it is really questionable.

im sure one day all cards are going to be in cases serial numbered and locked into a database, it's just too much funny stuff going on, lol

it would be pretty sick for a company to have a website and list/database every card so they were all pristine right out the gate for a certain set.

That's a little strange - that's just pissing money away if they are fake - which they probably are.

Not sure how this is a story, other then buying fake cards potentially, or a memory either.

Because I got the lead from a friend, and even though he doesn't collect or follow sports cards, it showed that he thought about me outside of football. True friends like that are hard to come by, and as little as I have in them, I
could really care less. There's more to this hobby than the dollar value :)

Or maybe he knew they were fake and knew he could get over on you for $800 or whatever you paid for worthless pieces of cardboard he bought for $1 each or something?

Of course that's a good way to think on your end to make things not "burn" ... but wouldn't the best course of action be to return them to him saying you're not interested anymore and you apologize for going back on the deal?

I honestly wish I had $800 to blow on cards... haha. He charged me $1 a piece on some other vintage singles of Jerry West, Pat Riley, Bill Walton, and Wilt Chamberlain, with two or three of Abdul Jabaar, and threw these cards in for free. Sure, they're probably fake, but like I said, I could care less if they are. I finally have a few conversation starters in my collection, and I'm proud to say that a friend helped me get them.

Yeah I don't know where I pulled that $800 number from lol sorry!

You did say you paid more than you wanted to/should have ... so you obviously value your money.

Just think it's odd that you can be OK with the situation.

I think the OP has his own answer on the authenticity of these cards. If he paid $1 each for some vintage stars and these got thrown in for free then there is no way they are real.

Its 2013. Anyone selling vintage sports cards knows there is potential value in them. We aren't talking about creased beaters here, nor are we talking about a PSA 10 low pop common. I could see someone selling the later for cheap not knowing low pop scrubs can fetch major loot to registry collectors. Here we have vintage 50s-70s RCs of some of the most legendary names in basketball history. Anyone with an internet connection and fingers can go on ebay and see what these go for.

To each his own though. If the OP didn't spend real money and is happy with what are more than likely reprints then enjoy. If you paid any significant cash under the impression they may be real then I would strongly suggest getting them graded and should they come back as reprints get that money back.

OP... If you value friendship so much, and you thought these were real... You were willing to allow your friend to sell you potentially thousands of dollars worth of sports merchandise for a couple of bucks? Some friend you are....

First off, I would like to defend myself on being called out about my character here. My friend had not one penny tied up in these cards, nor an ounce of interest. We go to highschool together, and I help him find deals on farm equipment as he does me with sports memorabilia. We both realize that we each have our own hobbies/jobs that fill our free time, as he does his out of tradition as I do mine out of pleasure. When I was directed to this lot, he had not a single ounce of knowledge on sports cards other than what I had bestowed upon him, and vice versa for myself and farm equipment. If you would like to revise the original post, I asked the grandfather if he knew what the cards were worth. His response is there. I tried to share with you guys the slight glimmer of hope that I had that there was still a possibility that an occurrence of generosity could take place, but that was soon extinguished as my actions and well wishes of these cards being authentic were criticized. I respected the semi-professional opinions on authenticity, however the questions brought about regarding my character did step on a few toes.

saw this post the other day...and I've got to say none of this adds up...

Strangest post I've ever read...you're either an idiot or you think we are idiots...

The answer to your last statement is neither. I do not that you all are idiots. That's too inclusive of the good members we have on the board.

Hahaha. A true story of friendship. Purchasing some of the rarest rookie cards in the basketball hobby for a dollar a piece. What a pal you are!! This thread is weird as hell, and it's kind of creeping me out. I think i'm just gonna go revisit Kellen Moore to cheer me up.

Again, there was no purchase for the three cards in question. They were gifts. If you are going to roast the lamb, count the hairs first.

This is what I don't get - If they were real, then you kind of cheated your friend for hundreds (if not thousands) $$$ of cards that you said you got for "free" ... If they were fake, then well your friend kind of cheated you by making you pay for them - As you said "not as much as I should have or wanted to" is what you paid ( but then later you said you got them for practically free which leaves me confused )

How did I cheat my friend in any way, shape, or form if they weren't even his cards to begin with? Clearly his grandfather knew the true value of the cards, whether they are authentic or not, due to his response. Maybe the thought that he could make me happy and give me hope for a split second outweighed what he could charge me for a couple of reprinted pieces of cardboard? Either way, I look forward to revisiting him and talking sports with him as he seems like a caring a reputable person that has a heart.

Fantasy world? I live in the real world. I am a student athlete that is constantly on the road, and I admit sometimes I have contemplated selling my collection to ease the costs of my life. And why would I want conformation if they're authentic or not if they're not going anywhere anyway? As long as they are in my hands, they are real to me. I understand that they may be fakes, but I also understand that these fakes are the closest I will come to the real thing under my current circumstances. So before you dis me for finding bliss in my sin, say a quick prayer before you buy a knock-off pair of sunglasses, a $10 replica jersey, or a pair of headphones for 20% of market value from an asian marketplace. I see no difference.

they're real to you now? huh? dude, they're fakey fake. why would you even want a memory of having been played? never mind treasuring the memory. man, BO never ceases to amaze

How was I played? If someone gave you a free pair of RayBans, and you found out they were knockoffs, how bad would your bank account be hurting? Exactly. That's identical to my situation. But you see, I took it with a grain of salt and enjoyed my spoils. If you expect to win every time in life you'll never see the beauties of losing.

Same as my opinion.... they all look fake to me. Looks like the old man pulled a fast one on ya hahaha :D

I don't understand where this whole idea that I got ripped off comes from. I clearly stated that they were free. And yes, for myself, unlike other members on this board, $600 in an unacceptable amount of money to spend on cards in my situation. And I was hoping for a great deal, and I got one. I purchased 4 Pat Rileys, 2 Jerry Wests, 4 Wilts, and a few Lews to accompany the other commons that totaled $16. Sorry for the people who would like to investigate further, he didn't provide me a receipt.

There's your answers. I honestly believed that this could be the one place that I could share my find and people would understand my joy, whether they were reprints or not. Despite being one of the younger members, I expected just a slight bit more respect from my elders, and I was disappointed. Thank you to those who understood and appreciated my views on the situation, and to those who didn't... No worries. What goes around comes around. So sorry for the late responses, I had a family matter, and that comes before cardboard.

Thank you and God bless.

Er, you thought they were real, then didn't care all of a sudden. You're pretending cards you think are fake but real? Sounds like fantasy to me.

We're just looking out for you and trying to let you know If you didn't already... this way you could get your money back and what not. Sure it sounded funny of the old man to do, but it wasn't meant to make fun of you. It was just a heads up. If you got them free, then great! But at first you had said $600 for all the cards, so I thought later you just made a deal for these three cards, and just wanted to let you know that they were fake. I guess you didn't fully explain what happened exactly or I probably just read it wrong. Either way, just giving you a heads up, as i'm sure everyone here was also.

Best of luck, and enjoy your hobby. As long as you're happy, that's all that really counts.

Honestly, if the OP values his friendship more than the value of cardboard good for him! At least we know the OP won't be cheating anyone on the website, he collects for fun, and not money so good luck OP and don't let everyone's negativity get you down, we all have been scammed at least once so skeptism is part of the collecting world. Best of luck and enjoy your cards (either fake or real)!

If I ever come across cards of players you pc, I will be sending them your way. Finally someone who just enjoys it as a hobby. I have a Jordan fleer rc, that was bought at a flea market for like 5 dollars. I'm 99.9 % sure it's fake, but that is still 99.9% closer than ill ever be to a real Jordan rc. I'm a husband, father and sole provider first, but that .01 is kinda cool, even knowing how slim it is. Also if your gonna post read the whole thing, half of the posts could have been left off.

The answer to your last statement is neither. I do not that you all are idiots. That's too inclusive of the good members we have on the board.

Again, there was no purchase for the three cards in question. They were gifts. If you are going to roast the lamb, count the hairs first.

Both were printed on flimsy, shiny stock after he took them out of the cases. I passed as he wanted $450 a pop even though I argued they were reprints. That money soon turned into the down payment on my truck.
