I'm hoping to go at least one day. Star War Celebration 5 is the following weekend. If I get an invite (I did last time, but it was in Japan :(), I'm definitely going to that, so we'll see what the $ situation looks like closer to then.

Right now, things look good for me to go again this year. Went to Cleveland last year. About a 6 hour drive for me, but have a friend I can stay with just outside DC and a few friends from Youtube are talking about going. I'll probably one of the few crazy guys wearing a Steeler jersey in Baltimore. Haha.

Ok. I'm a rookie in this area. I'm in Northern VA so I'm close enough to go. I'm assuming it's worth it because everyone talks about it. My question is do I have to make a weekend out of it or can a one day drive up there be good enough?

MrSnyder

Normally I'm there, BUT this is the SECOND YEAR out of THREE that they've put it the same weekend as the HOF induction. With Rice, Smith, and who knows who else...I HATE THAT! The HOF does the first weekend of August for YEARS! Can't TriStar make it the week before or after. They loose a TON of business when they do this. I'll be heading to the HOF weekend instead...Have fun boys!

I wish they could make it closer to the West Coast. I stick with the original suggestion from last year - Las Vegas!

2009 was my first year 3 1/2 hour drive only went for the day. It was ok but if I had spent more time it would have been better too much to see and do one day and you miss most of it. If I go this year going for the week.

So let me ask those veterans that have been to Nationals...Is it worth it? I am now looking at me and my son coming up there for a couple of days instead. Heres the a breakdown of costs.

Airfare: $800 Combined
Hotel: $300
Meals: $100

Card Spending :?$?$?$$

So truly, is it worth it? I know I would like quite a few of the autographs, but not sure what to really expect from a show of this magnitude. The money is really not the object, but I also dont want to piss away a couple of grand. Any input would be appreciated.

Well I managed to drop about 3K on wax while there. In Cleveland we had a decent room rate and ate reasonable I thought. I'm hopeful that I can find a Holiday inn Express outside of Balt fairly cheap, but may try and car pool again (downsides to car pool...kinda stuck where 1 person is or wants to go).

Dad and I are driving down from Allentown for one day, at least that is the current plan. If any the NEPA folks want to get together I have a mini-van we could theoretically get 8 people in it.

if you plan on being in a hotel down town for 4 days expect the cost to be 150 to 300.00 a night , the deals are at the nationals for sure depends on your money situation when i buy at the nationals i have it shiped to my house through fed ex & so i dont need to keep leaving the show to bring the stuff home

look in the glenbernie area of baltimore its 10 mins from down town parking is expensive so car pooling is the best

Don't forget the U-Haul trailer you need to rent to put the cards in that everyone will buy.

That is the idea for them. If I go by myself I would probably just drive down for the day. 2 1/2 hour drive isn't that bad.

The last time I went to the National was around 1997 or 1998 in Cleveland. Are there any people set-up selling non-sport?

Already looking into Hotels closest to the Convention center. There Should be deals for airfare closer to the time.

Would most likely fly in on Friday or saturday. And fly out Sunday night late. Would pay the hotel rates to be close. That way I wouldn't have to rent a car. Just hope theres a good resturant or Denny's close by.

Checked the Oriles games around that time. Incase you all would like to catch a game after the Convention closes for the day.

8/6/10 White Sox's @ Oriole's tickets $17 & up 7:05pm
8/7/10 " " tickets $25 " " 7:05 pm
8/8/10 " " tickets $16 " " 1:35 pm

Have alot of time to get everything together.

That would be cool. But wonder if wearing a Marlins cap there would get my Arse kicked lol.

Will check on airfare a couple of months prior to it. Have to put down the vacation time also. And start selling alot of my cards that have been filling up my too sell drawer.

Someone mentioned that they Fed Ex'ed their stuff home. Are they located at the Convention center? Really don't want to load everything in my baggage. Because I might just use a carry-on alot easier than checking in luggage.

And Staying in a Hotel right across the street saves on car rental and gas. I think I have a cousin in Maryland. If he lives close. I could stay with Him. We'll see. We have 6 months and about nine days to get everyone and everything else together. This thread should be pretty long by then.

As it looks right now I will be going for the weekend. I have to wait and see when the autograph times/prices come out. As someone said earlier, the prices are higher than at a regular show so I don't know who I would want to get. Pretty sure Eddie Murray doesn't sign a lot so he should be a good one to get.

Also if anyone is in my area it should just be me and my son if one person wants a ride.

BGS and PSA both are there. I'm not sure if they due what I'd consider "true slabs" on site (think they do), but they also do a very popular program called "raw card review" which is pretty close to the same thing. Typically drop them off in the morning and they're ready that afternoon if I'm not mistaken

A lot will depend on whats offered for incentives. I would expect Panini to have something (so classics could be a good one).

kevinshreves
05-31-2010, 01:59 PM
On SK, we could easly split up a 60 box case. Here's what i'm thinking...

60 hit spots
30 base slots (2 boxes worth of base)

You could have it where every random 5th would be the base spots for the previous 2 boxes. This would include gold and silver parallels as well as the minis.

Any freebies SK is giving away we could just random off.

Yeah I was a little shocked when I saw the price of Willie Mays. I've already bought my ticket, so at least I get the free autos(or my son will). Initially, Im looking at only buying two autos ...Barry Sanders and Cal Ripken.

I didnt even buy the Boggs. Had a photo opt been included I think I would of, but I agree the prices are really high. I just saw the fall Chicago lineup and they've got some good signers at great prices (Dale Murphy was only like 25 bucks). I'd love to meet and talk with Boggs for a few minutes, but I'm not about to drop 70 bucks to get it, when I know I can buy his autos online for almost 25% of that.

Sounds like I'll have net acess as well, but still need to check with the hotel...I'm not exactly fond of paying for breakfast and internet service when they're charging me room and board if you know what i mean. Think Blowout will have the wireless again so I can probably talk Pat into a linkup like we did last year.

Depending on what Panini does, could also be worth considering something football related, they were pretty interested in the live break I was streaming last year

I'm 80% sure that I will be set up there. If so, I will have a few computers at my table with wireless for my customers to peruse my COMC inventory. You can certainly use one for posting the break.

I'm curious about the case incentives you guys are talking about. These are offered by the Manufacturers like Topps, Pannini? Do you buy the case directly from them? What are some of the case incentives you have seen in the past?

I am going to national and if the incentives are good I will buy several cases.

Thanks!

You buy cases from where ever you can obtain them, but you have to open the boxes/cases at the manufacturer's booths in order to get the incentive cards.

Here are some examples of what Sportkings gave out at past Nationals:

Which night if any is everyone planning on going to an Orioles game? I'm kinda leaning toward Thursday night at least, but wasnt sure if anyone was wanting to organize a big groyup to go. Also, is anyone bringing kids? The reason I ask is that I am bringing my 9 year old son, so I am hoping he can find some kids his age to hang out with.

Kevin,

Last year's National was my first one to attend, and I loved every minute of it. Glad you're able to finally make one. It's cool you're able to share it with your GF too. :)!

For the record I thought I'd be the only one in Cleveland with a Boggs jersey and I wasnt...however 1 out of 3 people made it easier to spot

Couple of questions for a newb to the National thing. I may go next summer as I won't be able to attend this one. Is it worth going, if you aren't going to get any autos?? Just to see dealers, singles, BGS, checking it all out, etc. Seeing what your guys' thoughts are, thanks!!

As much as it kills me to say this, I have no plans to get any autos (given Boggs is going to be there). I though the dealers last year were ok. I was able to pick up a few nice cards for my PC, missed a few others (bring a notebook so you can remember where specific dealers are if your debating about certain cards...300+ vendors if your like me you'll forget).

I thought the atmosphere was good, but in all honesty I loved the wax deals and incentives. The incentives made it worth it for me. We had the Sportkings Break we did as a group break and got some really nice incentive cards there, but Press Pass and Panini both had really nice stuff too! I cashed in on Tristar Promo's the most. Obak and Propsects Plus Promos had be broke in three days. Be intersesting to see if they do them this year since Persuit doesnt work well for Pack War type Promotions.

I might go this year. Tips? How many dealers are there? On average how much would you say that you spend?

Yes, you provide your own items. Most of them will sign any item. I've picked up some good sigs on team or theme pieces I'm working on in the past.

Depends on what you are looking for. I am working on a couple of vintage sets '67 and '61 and tend to also bust alot of wax. With the VIP package and autographs, balls and stuff to get signed plus all of the stuff I buy I spend at least $3000.

My little brother is 11 and I think he spent around $600 last year including the VIP package.

If you are going multiple days I would say $500 at least.

I agree with UPS. In three days last year I dropped 3-5K without doing much thinking. That being said, its not hard on wax to do that. Really depends on what your looking for, and what your normal spending habits are. Box/case prices will be lower than normal only because you dont have to pay shipping. Singles can be cheap or expensive, just depends on what your looking for, what you find, and what your willing to pay.

I won't be able to leave my table much since I don't have any help, but I am always up for pack wars with any of the wax I have at my table. I'm more of a super sized collector than a dealer who actually tries to make money. :)
I am set up right next to the COMC booth. Come and see me.
