Why were these not formally graded? Are they essentially the equivalent of BGS 8s, in poor condition as to not warrant a grading? :confused:

I believe I've seen some 8.5's in YouTube videos and maybe even breaks on here. So the 8 statement by OP was probably correct.

Sure sounds logical...Maybe it was one of the earlier year releases they used "9" ...8.5 could definitely be the case

Well technically you're not guaranteed a graded card. It says "slabbed or graded."
But when buying such a high end product, it is a poor excuse not have a high graded card.
