It seems like the Cavs will be one of the more active teams this offseason, especially on Thursday night with 4 picks (1, 19, 31, 33). How do you think they should approach this offseason and post any rumors here that you see?
I'm hearing that it will be down to Len or Noel if they keep the pick. Honestly, I am not buying that since Barnes or T-Rob were a "lock" at 4 last year and Thompson was a surprise at 4 the year before. I still have a gut feeling that they go with McLemore since he is the most talented player in this draft. Then I like that deal with the Mavs of sending 19 for Marion (expiring contract) and 13. Adding Marion does not hurt in their chase for LBJ next offseason and they get to move up. They were looking to add a vet SF. At 13, I'd really like to see Giannis Adetokobouno (however you spell it), and he will probably stay overseas for a couple more years since he is only 18 still. Then I would trade 31 and 33 for T-Rob as rumored. This makes sense for both teams here as the Cavs get a talented young player, whom has a team option after this season if he does not work out. And no way they want 4 rookies coming in to camp (same thing last year as they had 4 picks and only got 2 players in Waiters and Zeller). Only 1 drafted rookie will then come into camp and this is how their roster will start to look before FA hits:
PG - Kyire Irving, Chris Quinn
SG - Ben McLemore, Dion Waiters, CJ Miles
SF - Alonzo Gee, Shawn Marion
PF - Tristan Thompson, Thomas Robinson, Kevin Jones
C - Anderson Varejao, Tyler Zeller
I like McLemore starting over Dion here, even though Dion is better now. McLemore will space the floor for Kyrie and Dion can really score and handle the ball off the bench. I also feel like Speights will opt out of his player option and seek a little more money.
And then Free Agency hits. They need some depth and a backup PG. Not much noise will be made here. I think resigning Shaun Livingston to a one year deal will do the job to back up Kyrie. They are also rumored of having interest in Earl Clark to act as a hybrid forward off the bench. he could play PF if T-Rob does not work out. And then a garbage vet center like a Lou Amundson to fill out their 15 man roster.
I don't see much else happening and no major trades.
Roster heading into Opening Day:
PG - Kyire Irving, Shaun Livingston, Chris Quinn
SG - Ben McLemore, Dion Waiters, CJ Miles
SF - Alonzo Gee, Earl Clark, Shawn Marion
PF - Tristan Thompson, Thomas Robinson, Kevin Jones
C - Anderson Varejao, Tyler Zeller, Lou Amundson

I just don't see them taking McLemore. It makes far more sense to get a center at this point. Zeller doesn't look to be anything more than a career backup, and Andy is always hurt + getting up there in age. Just makes more sense to take either Len or Noel and hope you've found your center for the next 10 years.
I do like the potential T-Rob deal, even though I'm not big on him. I don't see the Cavs keeping 31/33, so they might as well move them for a young guy that might pan out. Definitely worth the risk.

No way they take McLemore at 1. It's between Len and Noel at this point.
With the two 2nd round picks, I hope to trade those to get a vet or a talented 2nd year rookie. I don't see Thomas Robinson being talented at all. I do like the Marion trade that could happen. He does has a year possibly two left in him, and the Cavs need a vet on the team. Wish it was Paul Pierce, but don't see Boston dealing him just yet

Now it looks like they are moving 19 for T-Rob and then 31 and 33 for Marion and 13. Like both deals if they happen. And now it seems the likelihood of them trading the first pick has increased.

Have any links? I'd really like to see where you're getting this! If they do move the 1st pick, who do you think they get? I was hoping DeMarcus Cousins, or LaMarcus Aldridge

Why the F**K would they want Vasquez?? He was great last year, don't get me wrong, but I don't see how he fits at all. I'm really sick of acquiring future picks stuff. I have been a huge supporter of Chris Grant, all his moves have panned out, but dude sometimes you have to step up and make a decision. By "supposedly" offering this he is saying I can't make up my mind, so give me until next year to figure it out

Or he realizes much like the rest of the NBA, that the 2014 Draft is LOADED compared to this one. If I could swap all the Cavs 2013 picks for 2014 picks, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Not about Vasquez
2014 Pick (especially depending on protection) is super valuable since the draft is deep
And I guarantee the Cavs think Len will be there at #6 (Noel/McLemore/Oladipo/Porter/Bennett)
If they could pull this trade off - considering that basically the Top 6 guys are all the same (I hear Mike Brown is really pushing for Bennett) - I'd take it in a heartbeat.
I'd take the others as well (Robinson for #19 and then Marion/13 for the 2 2nd rounders)
Kyrie
Waiters
Karasev
Thompson
Len
With Marion, Thomas Robinson, Zeller, Varejao off the bench and then having 2 2014 1st rounders (and potentially up to 4 1st rounders depending on the Kings and Grizzlies).
I'd be ecstatic if we walked away with that after tomorrow night.

Probably a fair deal. They don't think anyone at that spot in the draft can crack their rotation, and they are going to get the 26th pick for Marshon, which still would allow them to get one of their targets.

Well they can't get that Memphis pick until 2015 at the earliest and yes the Sacramento pick could come into play next season.
There is no way in the world New Orleans would send an unprotected #1 or even a lightly protected #1 next year for #1 overall this year. No chance.
That said, I am so tired of hearing all about next years draft and then next season it will be about the following years and on and on. What if Wiggins stays for his sophomore year like Barnes and Marcus Smart. What if Randle isn't all that like Shabazz (remember when he was the second coming this preseason). What if Parker and Gordon are just ok like McAdoo and Poythress and Goodwin and Isaiah Austin..... I mean to constantly bank on next year is foolish.

I don't know - depends on who they are targeting.
If they wanted Noel (to play at PF) next to Davis then I think you are right - because without Noel they are still awful. If they are targeting say Oladipo then I think they think (whether right or wrong) that they can make a jump. It wouldn't be unprotected but I could see Top 3 protected if they weren't taking Noel.
Won't happen anyway but that's the fun of this week.

I agree but why would the Cavs want to say have picks number 10 and 15 next year when no one has any clue who is coming out and how well they play at their respective schools. I agree that NO isn't that bad a team, with short of tanking, would be a back end of the lottery type squad. Those 2 late lottery mid first rounders wouldn't get you up very high if the draft is loaded as all the pundits say it will be.
Brooklyn trade makes no sense to me either. Why would they want Miles, I don't get it... All this craziness will thankfully be over tomorrow

Well while I agree that they'd have no clue who would be there at say 10 and 15 - I think the real reason is that the Top 6 picks this year are pretty interchangeable.
It'd say it's a solid 70% chance that Len is there at #6. Worst case you are getting McLemore or Bennett - I'd say Porter/Noel/Oladipo are gone by #6.
Since they are all "in play" why not get a free 1st rounder? I'd rather have that #10 pick next year and Bennett if everyone else was gone then I would Noel.

If Minny offered Derrick Williams, Shved, #9 and next years #1 for Kyrie, would you take that? Of course not.
It would take a ton to get Love or any other All Star big man under the age of 28. Can't blame them for trying but its not gonna happen unless they dip into future unprotected #1s

And Love can say all the nice things he wants about minny, he bolting from that team after 2014-15 season, what superstar in his right mind would stay. He been talking kindly lately but that wasn't the case about a half a year ago. He will leave Minny after 2014-15 season.

To think we (Cavs) would part with all that without some kind of inkling or extension in place his really naïve. Love had the hand last year but before that he rarely missed time. Of course I would do that trade if I'm the Cavs, I was trying to supply a realistic opinion from Minnesota's side. If in 2 years Love won't resign I imagine they will pursue moving him then. No reason to do it now unless you are completely blown away by an offer.

Those top 5 picks number can be easily replaced from FA pool. Love (when heathly) is a top 10 player. It is impossible to replace Love just by having 3 young kids around.
And besides, there is no saying those 3 kids would stick together and develop a team game.

Where are you getting Karasev is staying overseas? Because he went back to Russia recently?
The only reason he went back to Russia is he had a guarantee from a team and didn't need to continue to workout after the Nike Hoops Summit. Happens all the time with international players.
I disagree that Len wouldn't start. I think he would and Anderson would still play 30 minutes a game rotating at the 4 and 5 spot - I realize Anderson is an All Star level player but I think he'd be better rotating spots, and saving his body, as opposed to starting.

Karasev, Schroeder, Goebert and now even Giannis all say they are coming over next season. Teams are now moving them down the board especially Giannis because they don't want to pay them first round contracts while they play in the D League for 1-2 years.

Anyone else thrilled with this draft? Bennett was a surprise but I love it. Cavs were prepared to trade UP for Karasev but he fell in their laps at 19, and somehow still landed an NBA-ready player in Carrick Felix at #33. We needed offense, and we got three offensive players who will contribute immediately. Great draft.

We had the worst D in the league last year. Mike Brown will help, but Carrick Felix isn't going help much, if at all, with that.
I was very disappointed they gave away Allen Crabbe at 31 and took Felix at 33. So many better prospects sitting there that could be solid role players. I don't get constantly giving away high second round picks for more second round picks. Gotta get off the hamster wheel eventually. I know its been said that Grant keeps doing that with the idea of landing another superstar in the near future, so their firsts will be low and need the ammo in the back to do deals. But stop looking 3-4 years down the line

Fellow cavs fan here and love your enthusiasm, but we need defense not offense!! Badly, that is the whole reason they wanted Mike Brown back.
I think they had a good draft as well, load up on offensive talent and let Mike Brown worry about getting the players to play defense. No matter what he does this year there's no way it could be worse than Byron Scott, the coach of 0 offense or defense.

It's a hell of a lot easier to teach and offensive player to play adequate defense then it is to teach a defensive player to score.

Yea, Brown will have them playing much better defense right out the gates, as long as the players buy in. He built those LeBron-led Cavs teams into top-tier defensive teams despite not really having a bunch of guys known for their defense.
