Although Panini America’s first product of the 2013-14 NBA season — Hoops Basketball — doesn’t drop until late October, some of the first Rookie Cards of the new season are already on the market. And the only way to get one — at least for now — is directly from one of the 36 rookie stars who attended the 2013 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot (http://paniniamerica.wordpress.com/2013/08/07/panini-america-on-location-the-2013-nba-rookie-photo-shoot-video-gallery/) earlier this week.
In a stunning display of expeditious turnaround time, Panini America officials took photographs of the 2013 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot participants last Sunday and had finished trading cards delivered back to the host hotel less than 24 hours later. Each player signed 100 of his special Next Day cards last Monday for insertion into 2013-14 Panini Basketball later this season. But the company also produced limited Personal Edition cards for each player that included 60 of their own cards and a complete 36-card set featuring every player at the 2013 NBA Rookie Photo Shoot.

The Personal Edition cards were given to the players near the end of Tuesday’s shoot, turning the massive New York Knicks practice facility into something of a sports card show, with players — who received their cards with genuine, childlike glee — signing their cards before trading with fellow rookies.
It was a truly endearing scene that you can appreciate in the quick video below. I actually think this is very cool...can't wait to see which ones pop up in eBay and maybe some stories about how people got them from the players... It's cool to see the players engaged in cards and excited about it.

I think some of you guys may be getting confused - Those "Personal Edition" cards are strictly for the players and there was no reason to have a "signing area" and make room for the autographs because they weren't intended to be signed (The players just did that on their own for themselves)

With these type of cards, you want them to look a little ugly w/ the "personal edition" so big to avoid confusion if they find their way to Ebay

So unless the posters above me feel bad for the players because there is no clear signing area for their cards, not sure what the complaining is about

Put yourself in their shoes. Panini just handed you 100 cards to sign. You sign the 100, and then they give you 60 more for "friends and family". Naturally you would think you have to sign them, it only makes sense. Topps makes their players sign a select amount of cards to be given to their friends and family. Even though Panini didn't specifically say in the article that they told them to sign the 60, it probably was implied.

I'm not sure what your point is? You can argue it was implied that the cards had to be signed if you like, but that doesn't change the fact that the designers would have made these with the premise that they weren't supposed to be signed. Hence there's no discernible signing area.

I read this to be that right now, only the players have these cards. Unless some player sells them online, the only way to get them is from the player. Of course, if someone else gets a card or two or more and puts it on ebay, that's another way to get one.
