Penny and Grant Hill! Their prices are absolutely surreal relative to their careers/accolades, imo. I'm sure I'll get crucified for saying it though.

Kyrie Irving
No way. I watch the Cavs year-round. If he stays healthy, best point guard in the league in 3 years.

Agreed! The day he entered the league is the day the Cavs became my second favourite team!
He is also a fan favourite so that will also help his card prices! :)!

Not the first thing that came to mind but I respect these answers.
I'm pretty sure Kobe wasn't 10x better than Tim Duncan, but what do i know?

Out of the Big Name Rookies in the past 5 years, I would say Paul George, Kyrie Irving, and Harrison Barnes
5-10 Years down the road, I just can't envision those 3 players not going down in value - That's probably not a popular opinion, but that's pretty much my point ... The hype can't get higher than it is right now

Chris "Birdman" Andersen bar none. The prices his cards were commanding during the playoffs were something incredible.

Definitely Harrison Barnes for me, I could understand it if he was the 1st option, but hes the 4th on the Warriors
And Kyrie's RPAs are crazy right now, though I think the hype is warranted, I dont see how they can increase any more unless the Cavs actually start winning
I would say Griffin as well at his peak, but he has dropped considerably to pretty fair prices

MJ and Kobe are the top of the top. I don't think its overvalued vs how good they are but more a matter of how undervalued other players are in comparison. Those 2 are the most popular and top of the pile (with Lebron so please don't flame me!! hahah). They should be the highest priced.

Even if he was the best pg in the game right now i would still think he was overpriced.

If you have to wait three more years for him to be the best, doesn't that correctly answer the OP's original question?

No, you're accurate in terms of stats. I think what we have to remember though is that collecting 90's era guys is a case of hind sight being 20/20. Yes their careers didn't pan out to the extent they should have. But this hobby is not bout collecting players with the best stats. It's the reflection of a large pool of personal (for various reasons) collections. Players like Penny and Hill defined the hobby for one of the most important generations in the hobby. Now we are older, have some expendable funds, and may be experiencing an early midlife crisis! When you factor in the "hobby" side of it all I don't find their cards over valued.

Sure they are, when basic 90s inserts, not rare at all in nature and not serial numbered, are being listed "by the dozen" for astronomical (Astronomical is open to interpretation based on one's budget.) numbers there's a clear sign of being overpriced. I know some people only collect BGS cards, that's another topic entirely, but I'm referring to non-graded cards.
I can understand a Jordan, or a Kobe card going for more than other players because of popularity - but the difference in listing/sale price is plain vulgar. ...and until people stop over paying, those numbers will likely remain unchanged.

I see the argument for both Penny and Hill but tend to agree that they were truly iconic players in the 90s. Many collectors with disposable income that are getting back into the hobby grew up in the 90s. That's why you see a boom in the 90s insert market and guys like Hill and Penny getting serious love.
Not sure if that love continues in the future when the next generation drives the hobby. Guys like MJ and Kobe will likely be immune to interest decreasing over time but not sure if the same can be said of guys like Penny and Hill. In their primes, they were both very special though.

No, I don't think so. If you're in the discussioon about being the best PG in the league, and you're only 21 years old, $2K+ doesn't seem overvalued for your best RC.

Couldn't agree with you more.....just goes to show this hobby is way more about sentimental value than the stat sheet value. I'm a 90s teenager myself and I favored CWebb over Penny back in the day, which has lead to a crazy Webber collection. I'm thankful that CWebb doesn't get the hobby love of Penny, otherwise it would have been too costly to collect him.

The love wouldn't happen to this generation for the hobby. Penny, Grant Hill, and many 90's stars were playing in the era that cards are not extremely limited. Meaning, there are about 2000~2300 cards for each players before 2010. It is very doable to hit 75%~80% mark because there are not many 1/1s.
However, with Panini and UD milking 90's hype, there are WAY too many cards making on these 90's stars on every products. It is getting sick. The same would go for recent year RCs. Seriously, who would collect all 24 products of this year RCs? And how many collectors would go for all the low numbers RCs in recent years? Most people will "collect" now, and sell within couple years for "investment" because they know there is NO WAY that they can reach 75%~80% mark anymore. If you count all the 1/1s and /5, etc, you would be lucky to have 40% of the collection of a decent players.
