Stick with stuff like the smaller bars from well known vendors.
5 GRAM AUSTRALIAN PERTH MINT GOLD BARS | Buy .9999 Fine Gold Bullion Bars Online (http://www.providentmetals.com/5-gram-perth-mint-australian-gold-bar-in-assay-card-9999-fine-bullion.html)
There are 1g and 2.5g bars out there, too.

Expect to pay a significant premium for gram bars especially if they come with an assay card. This would include suisse, perth, igr, etc.
If you have the cash for a gram, save it until you can buy 5. If you can't wait that long, try to save up to at least 2.5.

With that said, it took me a while to learn that lesson and I have quite a few 1 gram IGRs I would part with. Generally I'll go a buck less than the best price you find on ebay.

Have you thought about fractional ounce gold coins instead of gram bars?
You can get 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce American gold eagles, Gold Maple Leafs go as small as 1/20 ounce. The premiums are higher for fractionals, but that also goes for when you sell them too.
Since I focus mainly on silver I can't buy large quantities of gold, but I find I can still afford the occasional 1/4 ounce gold Maple for a little diversity. For such small amounts I prefer official government minted coins, they are much easier to sell if the time ever comes.

Their isn't a crazy premium on 1 gram bars if you buy them from a source that doesn't do it to make a living or support a storefront.

I understand the premium may not be out of this world unfair, but I want to buy as a much as I can comfortably to eliminate as much as that premium as possible. ive set a solid budget. as the prices go right now I can/should be able to pull of 2 oz silver 1 g gold rotation every other week. ending each month with 4 oz silver 2g gold. the biggest issue right now is source.

It would be best to just buy a 2.5 gram or larger piece every month or so, you don't want to be paying such large premiums. Also, try to find a seller that doesn't charge sales tax, otherwise you are paying an additional 7-8% premium for no reason.
