I just started coaching a girls high school basketball team and I am trying to come up with some fundraising ideas to raise money for things like new uniforms next season, warmups, shoes, etc.

So far, I have started a team page on GoFundMe that has raised an amazing total of $10  - better than nothing though!

I also have spent some money to get the silicone wristbands created to sell at the school/games, so hopefully that will bring in some decent money.

Anyone have any ideas? We can't do a car wash, since they have done 3 in the last couple of months. We will be doing a free throw fundraiser, but we cannot do that until the season is under way.

Thanks in advance.

Get people to 'sponsor' the team for a 24hour dribble challenge. Get all the girls to take turns to dribble a ball continuously for 24hours. If they make it, then the sponsors have to cough up the amount they nominated!

I would even offer to start you off with a $10 pledge! ;)

This is America.

Obviously just ask their parents for money.

Is there a Legion or VFW that sells pull tabs? They funded many teams in my high school days.

Sponsorship is obviously the easier way, though I am not sure what limitation the school impose on you.

For my business basketball team, I offer free advertisement in exchange for sponsorship. Rather it is a logo on jersey, seat covers, water bottles, banners, etc. See if they want to get there name out in front of people. I targeted Insurance companies, Real Estate, Lawyers, etc who would want to appeal to the market you are in (High school student, Teachers, and parents).

As a professional fundraiser, sponsorship is the easiest. Wal-Mart and Target are several local corporations (in almost every area) that support schools and sports. I think the highest they donate is $1K before requiring a 501(c)3 designation, but $1k is pretty good start. They require a letter, most likely supported by the league or school and they will cut a direct check for the team.

Other options are direct mail solicitations, these are timely, but if you have a lot of email addresses or mailing addresses you can spend $.50 per solicitation and generate $5, 10, 25, and $50 per solicitation. As long as it isn't cold direct mail (sending to people you don't know) your percentage rate is typically 50%+.

Either way, you have to spend money and time, to make money... It really depends on you and the team. If you have a disabled student, or someone that would draw a big crowd you have better chances, people donate to these types of causes and if you have the means, DEFINITELY milk it.

Good idea - though, I didn't want to post for your money, just your ideas!

Obviously just ask their parents for money.

Unfortunately with the parents paying tuition, it is harder to get them to donate.

I'll ask around about this - thanks!

Unfortunately we don't have a gym, so we lose out on these kind of opportunities. I had thought about selling a program during the preseason with the advertising in it. Thanks for the idea.

Another thing I've seen done is a dropoff barrel/trailer for aluminum cans. It's locked down so people can't take it and gives people a chance to contribute something many just throw away.

Bake sell... Make COOKIES. And charge $1 per coookie.

Have the girls sell them in school... The boys will buy them all.

$1 isnt much but the profit margin on cookies could be crazy. Spending $5 could = $25.

Spend $100, make $500.

Just wanted to bump this up and say thanks for all the ideas. So far our donations/sponsorships have totaled $265 with promises of more coming in this week!

The order of the silicon wristbands came in and we started selling those this morning at school for $1 each to the students!

Here are a couple pictures of the wristbands:

you could pull a haiku. i heard that shizzle works great!

seriously though, one thing that has worked for our league is doing an annual chili cook off. everyone loves chili and a lot of people think their chili is the best, so it generally does quite well

good luck!

Couple of ideas:

There are many companies out there that can create discount cards for deals with local merchants. Our high school football team sold these at the beginning of the season and netted nearly $25k and it's a town of only 11,000 or so.

Another idea (if you can find a gym to use) is to lower the rims and have a slam dunk contest (slam-a-thon). Alot of fun for the kids and parents to watch...
