I just logged in the morning and saw this. The purchaser didn't even make an offer:

9/13/2013 4:12:36 AM
2002 Upper Deck MVP Gold #12
Barry Zito #4/25
10222440 Sold for $22.56 Bought for $2.20

Not a bad ROI.

Nice $20 profit on that. Here's my best one that I then resold on the site.

I like this thread. :)

I don't have any good COMC flip stories, but I have tons of good LCS-to-eBay flip stories. I have bought many cards from him in the $2-$10 range and sold them on eBay for $25-50.

I've had a couple pretty good ones. I think the one below is my favorite. It was the fifth card I purchased on the site, first for flipping, picked it up before anybody cared about Zach Britton, and I sold it during the twenty five minute window where it was actually a desirable card. If I didn't sell it then, I'd definitely have to take a major loss to sell this card now.

I looked through my 2011 flips and a couple of my favorite were bargain basement flips

1957 Topps Don Hoak - Purchased for $.76 Sold for $4.99
2010 Topps Gold Update Geoff Blum Purchased for $0.13 Sold for $2.79

I know I have some decent amount flips, but will have to dig deeper.

These were all in June alone...which ironically was my worst month in sales in the last 2+ yrs:

Jackie Bradley Jr. 2011 Leaf Metal Draft Prismatic sold $79.99 bought $11.30 (this was a part of a port buy, so not the same as buying a single card and re-selling it, so...)

2008 Upper Deck Premier Stitchings Gold#CS Tom Seaver/Rod Carew/50 #13/15
Item: 7215348 sold $21.00 paid $2.50

2011 TRISTAR Pursuit Autographs Gold#46 Paul Goldschmidt #53/111
Item: 9258321 sold $20.00 paid $3.60

2008 Bowman Sterling#CD Chris Davis RC (Rookie Card) sold $20.00 bought $4.75

I want to go back to 2009/2010 when I first got started on COMC...I know I did real well with Peyton Hillis and that actually got me to really become involved on the site...would be nice to look back at it. cool thread --- (I will also show a few worst flips, and I know one of them involves Mark Sanchez...enough said)

Found one of them:

2009 Score Inscriptions Autographs Red Zone#90
Peyton Hillis/30 #9/30
Item: 1278774 sold for $35.00 paid $10.00

Here are a few (sorry to some of you out there who purchased these). Some of my stats as skewed because of port sales since it does an average of the cards instead of an actual real price. I also sold a few things on ebay and took delivery of some and resold on ebay (after grading) so those are not listed and cards not purchsed on comc are not reflected either. A few of these I never meant to sell and I thought the higer prices would have scared buyers away. Oops I was wrong.

No work, no per-transaction fee, no waiting to have anything shipped to you.

Not to sound like an ungrateful, stinkin' whiner or anything, but as long as COMC is monitoring this thread, one point of clarification is in order.

The COMC "IQ Test" IS work. Needless, unnecessary busy work which accomplishes nothing useful, adds no value to the site, and acts as a roadblock to people who are trying to use your website effectively.

When the COMC "IQ Test" was first introduced, I thought it was some temporary thing. Like you'd get rid of it that weekend or make it much easier to get history points. 10 to 100 history points per correct answer would be an improvement, but the truth is that anyone who spends hundreds of dollars per month in COMC fees shouldn't have to spend one second of their life gathering up more history points.

Alternately, I thought that by now you'd make the history points go farther. 1 history point = 1 hour of unlimited price lookups would be nice. Free lookups on our own cards or cards which have no price history would be an improvement.

Also, I had assumed by now that you would have come up with a more useful price metric than "highest price ever paid by the most desperate person to own the item when the item was at its peak value in the past 6 years".

Other than that, what you say is correct. COMC does all the busy work of scanning, sorting, identifying cards, storing, packing, shipping. It's totally awesome. But the main reason I deal with COMC is so that I DON'T have to spend my day identifying random cards, some of which have tiny little numbers or no numbers at all.

If you do insist on making us scrounge up history points, at least give us some task which would actually accomplish something. I saw a while back there was a contest where someone could send in a checklist for a particular minor league card set, and the winner of the contest would get some history points. Why is that a contest? Why just the one set? If COMC is working on a checklist feature and creating their own checklist of millions of items, why not let us create checklists for you? Anything would be better than that "IQ Test".

The worst part about the IQ Test - when I see a card I'm actually interested in, I can't click on any link to go to that card. The IQ Test might be marginally useful if it actually led to browsing and impulse shopping. But it doesn't even do that.

checkoutmydeals

I should clarify - the COMC sales history feature DOES add considerable value to the site. The COMC IQ Test does not. Unfortunately, COMC introduced the COMC sales history feature the same day they yanked the free Beckett prices, so it's hard to calculate how much value was added to the site with the sales history feature, vs how much was lost by losing the free Beckett prices. My belief is that if the COMC sales history feature was introduced 6 months or a year before the free Beckett prices were pulled, that the loss of Beckett values would not have had as much impact as it did. But what's done is done.

Completely agree about the history points. That needs to change ASAP. It's an annoying waste of time for big sellers, but we're basically forced to put up with it. However, I could see plenty of casual buyers just saying, "Screw This" and buying their cards elsewhere. Frankly, it's an insulting system to all users.

Incidentally, I'm ok with only showing the highest price paid. If you show all the prices paid or a range, it may be harder to ever get deals done (buyers will want to pay the low end and sellers the high end). Also, the total number of copies that have been shipped out is valuable information. Big difference between a card with 2 copies on the site and 20 have been shipped out vs a card with 40 copies on the site and 2 have been shipped out.

Even with the casual user, I'm not sure the history points work out. My 11-year-old son deposited $70 into his account to process a batch for the COMC National Special. He got 700 history points for doing this. But he never used them because he's waiting for the cards to be processed and to start selling those cards. Meanwhile, all of his history points have expired, and the batch is 15% processed.

My son's best flip is a Pokemon card that he bought for $1.33 and resold for $9.40. His eyes light up whenever he talks about it, and his friends think it's awesome that he's a 'card dealer'. So, props to COMC for being a place where an 11-year-old kid can actually buy and sell on the internet. But the history points thing still needs an overhaul.

Incidentally, I'm ok with only showing the highest price paid. If you show all the prices paid or a range, it may be harder to ever get deals done

The range I'd like to see is the average or median sales price plus one standard deviation as the high, and the average or median sales price minus one standard deviation as the low. For cards with a lot of sales, I'd also like to restrict that to sales from the past year. For cards with thin sales, I'll take what I can get.

Theoretically, that's what the Beckett high and low prices are - a range of values based on actual real-time selling prices reported by dealers from around the country selling in a variety of venues - auctions, retail card shops, shows, etc.

In reality, Beckett has been phoning it in for at least 25 years. If you see a card with 100 or more copies on COMC, that card is overvalued in Beckett. Yet, how frequently do they actually adjust prices?

For example, look at 1989 Fleer #548, Ken Griffey Jr RC (Rookie Card). COMC has 192 in stock, for as little as $1. They've sold 484 copies for as much as $5.64. Yet Beckett still has this listed as a $10 card.

Using the formula I proposed earlier, this would probably have a value range of about $1 to $3. Which is about right. That is a solid $1 to $3 card. It's a popular seller. But nobody has paid $10 for a raw copy of that card in the past 15 years.

Now Consider 2010 Bowman Platinum #1, Stephen Strasburg RC (Rookie Card). This also books in Beckett for $10. COMC has 121 copies on the site for as little as 97 cents. 216 copies have sold for as much a $7.62. But we don't know when those sales took place, and the $7.62 doesn't tell you anything about whether the card is worth 97 cents. A range of recent sales prices would be more helpful in that situation. And once again, Beckett isn't particularly helpful with their opinion of the card's value at $10. Nobody ever paid $10 for that card, even when it was hot. So where does the $10 come from?

Other useful metrics would be a median price for all cards sold from a set. This would be particularly useful for figuring out the value of commons, especially from thinly traded sets with low print runs.

It would also be useful to see the total number of cards from a set which have been sold vs the total number of cards which are unsold. This would be useful for determining whether a set has any collector interest.

Similarly, it would be useful to see the total number of cards from a player which have been sold vs the total number of cards from that player which are unsold. This would also be useful for determining collector interest.

A lot of times, I run into a card which is the only copy of that card to ever be on the site. It has no sales history. If I could figure out easily if the set is being collected or the player is being collected, I would be much more likely to purchase that card.

As you have said before ... if the whole point of 'hiding' sales data is to keep people from mining it, then -- while history points are a decent method of handling this -- the process needs much improvement. It is unnecessarily cumbersome, and I would think the last thing COMC would want is for its sellers to become frustrated using the site.

COMC has always been very responsive to its customers, and they usually find a solution if they agree with it philosophically and if it's physically possible to accomplish. I've seen COMC implement hundreds of customer suggestions over the years, which is why I keep making them.

COMC also has a habit of sometimes saying that they'll do something, and then nothing will happen for a seemingly long time. It could be that you're working frantically behind the scenes on some great new feature, and it could be that you got distracted by something else and forgot about it. So it seems appropriate to remind you once in a while.

The "history points" feature has been active for 2 1/2 months now. I've found the ability to see sales history extremely useful, both as a buyer and a seller. As a buyer, I'm more confident purchasing certain cards, even for more than I previously would have paid when everything was a pig-in-a-poke. As a seller, I'm more likely to lower prices on thinly traded items, and more likely to take a discounted offer when an item has little or no sales history. Yet, I'm also more confident holding my ground on certain items.

Even when submitting items, I'm more likely to favor players or sets which have a strong sales history than ones which have a weaker history.

But gathering up history points with the COMC IQ Test is strictly for the birds. And the actual data being dispensed is of limited value. So I don't mind reminding you from time to time that the feature could use some tweaks.
