View Full Version : considering comc vs ebay?

ive only sold on eBay and forums thus far. i have a small stockpile of random cards/#'d cards/inserts from all sports that will never sell on eBay, should i open a comc account and put all these randoms there?
i got no idea what im doing here, i understand that it would 25 cents to post each card on their site if i wait a month. i have roughly 400-600 cards all worth between 2-10 bucks bv, if i do send them in, any recommendations?
im just clueless here, read as much as i could but any advice would go long way

Check on COMC and see if the cards you are talking about are already listed on there or not. Use that as a barameter as to what to send in, and how much it will sell for. Good luck!

ye from what i see there isnt much that isnt on comc as far as availability, if you can be general as possible, what cards are worth sending in and what aren't? i dont care if i only make a penny on a card i just want my closet cleaned quite frankly.
lets say i have an aaron rodgers base card that has a bv of 2 bucks, if i can get 1 penny for it and not have to do any work why not at this point.
im sure the older inserts will sell, set builders, etc. but do base cards generally sell? or should i just start burning them.. better yet, i guess ill never really run out of toilet paper lol

EVERYTHING sells. Just depends on the price. Some things take a long time but I have been amazed at the things people will buy. Write on your submission "first time submitter" and you will get a $20 credit towards it. Just beware, once things start selling it gets addicting. My average is around 54% of BV but if a card is pretty common or a scrub insert it isn't unheard of to have to sell it at 80-90% off of BV. Either way it is more than I would have got for it sitting at home in a junk box.

if i say im a first time submitter itll be 55?
and thanks again for the heads up, if everything sells i guess it shouldnt be more than a couple months for this stuff to move? got about 40-60 jordan base i want to get rid of, plenty of star base cards, refractors of people like mitch richmondish-esque players, stuff i cant sell on eBay but i think has some value..
appreciate the heads up on the first time discount, ill sort through stuff when i get home!

Yes, on the submission fees unless cards are encased. They charge $1 each for those. As far as a couple of months it depends. If the cards are really really common or not highly sought after it can take much longer. COMC is definitely not for people that need instant gratification.

believe me the instant gratification would be getting this stuff out of my room, quite frankly if i can sell 2/3 of the 300 i submit by january id be THRILLED.
also, would like base rookie cards sell too? got tons of like james harden type rookie cards that have bv of 8-10 ish if i could even get 50 cents for id be thrilled..
and if sending 300ish cards do you have any advice on how to ship/save? ive never mailed more than a handful of cards at once, ive always just sold singles

Heres what I did with my first submission...
1) I looked over a bunch of cards on COMC, if they had multiple copies at a price I would sell at, I didn't bother, If I would list below those prices, I sent it in even if there were a lot of copies already there.
2) numbered inserts do well for me there, again though, depends how you price it.
3) If mine is the only copy, I price it higher, if more copies show up, I start lowering to be competitive
4) My first submission, I sent in only $20 worth (80 cards) so I figured I was only out shipping as my feeling out period with COMC.
Sometimes, you'll be surprised at what actually sells, but personally, I don't think base cards sell much at all

Good advice and pretty similar to what I do. I will send in base of stars though. Even if I sell them for .30 or so that is still .05 profit over just sitting in a stale box. I send in almost all RC's, inserts, star cards etc and all #'d and auto cards. Just like anything else, some things sell for more than book and some for 90% off of book. Just depends.

You are welcome, good luck.
Edit: as far as shipping I send in either four 550 ct boxes in a flat rate USPS medium box ($11 ish) or six in a USPS flat rate large box ($14 ish). Cheapest way to do it as the weight is pretty heavy. I've never sent in an order smaller than that so not sure how to do 300. Probably get a 300 ct box from your LCS and pack it inside another box to protect it. And pay for shipping through Paypal. It is cheaper and comes with free tracking.

I've done a 330 ct size box in a flat rate padded bubble mailer (about $5), so just depends on how many cards you are sending

You can do both. COMC is best for items which would be a pain to sell on eBay. The $2, $3, $5 cards are a good candidate. You can use the $20 first time submitter credit to submit 80 cards completely free. You might check the COMC sales history of your cards and favor cards which have had multiple sales, especially if the number of cards sold (and shipped) on COMC is larger than the number of cards in stock.
You can sometimes reduce the eBay pain-in-the-butt factor by selling bulk lots. For example, if you have 100 copies of a particular rookie card, and the lowest COMC price for that card is 50 cents, you might list the entire lot on eBay as a buy-it-now with best offer starting at $50. Maybe someone will buy it outright, or maybe someone will offer you $30 or $40. But when the smoke clears, you'll be better off than if you had submitted those 100 cards to COMC and paid 25 cents per card for processing.
You can also make bulk lots out of cards from a particular set or of a particular player or of a particular team. If the cards sell, great. If not, you can always submit them to COMC later.
USPS is making all sorts of different sizes of Flat Rate Priority Mailers, most of which you have to order through the USPS website. They'll be delivered to your house for free in about 2 weeks. One of the most useful is a flat rate priority bubble mailer. This ships as a letter - about $5.05 anywhere in the USA, or about $23.95 overseas with a 4 pound limit on international shipments.
Two 400 count card boxes can be stuffed into this mailer (or one 400 count box can be shipped very easily), and anything you can shove into a 400 count card box will make a great bulk lot to sell on eBay on a buy it now with best offer basis. Plus, you can sell anything else that would fit into a 400-count card box, such as loose action figures or other small items.
These mailers will also hold about 25 comic books pretty comfortably, and you might be able to stuff 30 or 40, sandwiched between backing boards.
On eBay, a recent development is that anyone can get up to 50 free Fixed Price listings per month. Previously, free listings were only auctions, which aren't as useful for this type of listing. Also, there is now a type of eBay listing which is a choice listing. So, if you have 50 different cards you want $3 each for, you can put them all into one listing, instead of having to put them in 50 different listings.
Right now, on COMC, I usually average around 30 to 50 sales per day, while on eBay I usually average about 1 or 2. But since some of my eBay sales are bulk lots with 400 or more items in them, I'm selling quite a lot of stuff on eBay as well.

on comc do you use promotions or classifieds or do you just have your stuff listed. I'm curious. I am still waiting on my first submission (300) to process but I am up to 71 cards I have bought and added to my port from the site and now the fun waiting game on seeing if any will sell. Most of them I have as the cheapest option with the exception of some guys who I think their value will go up so I'm hoping to hold on and try to sell later in the year like Forte and McCoy.

where can i see what they sold for? id love to get 50 cents for it all day, that would be awesome, even though technically id only make a quarter on it. stuff like this is clogging up my closet to no end!

Check on comc.com. If there are 20 sitting there at $0.50 chances are they're not selling at $0.50. However, if there are 20 sitting there at $2.00, they might get snapped up at $0.50. Remember, there are a lot of flippers on COMC too. They're like the snails in the tank that keep prices efficient.

If you go to the forum you want to post in, there should be a "New Thread" button on the upper left. If not, there's probably something wrong with your Adobe Flash or something.
For example, this forum is

To find the sales history, click on the asking price of any of the copies of the card for sale. You might need "history points" to access the price, and you might need to do some goofy "IQ Test" to get more history points. Warning: the "IQ Test" won't actually make you smarter.
Anyway, for the Dirk Nowitzki rookie, there are currently 87 in stock, with the lowest being 50 cents, but the 2nd lowest being 95 cents.
The sales history indicates that 137 have sold (and been shipped) off the site, and the buyers paid as much as $7.99 (including postage and packing).
That is an example of the sort of card which will sell well on COMC. Even though someone has it listed for 50 cents, it's likely that someone will either snatch it up at that price and relist it for 94 cents or more, or that, by the time you get around to listing yours, the 50 cent one will be sold and you'll probably be looking at 95 cents or so.
If you list 100 of these at 95 cents, you'll probably get offers all day long from certain sellers in the 48 cent range, which you can either take, or you can counter, or you can hold out for the 95 cents.
If you cross-post to Amazon (by adjusting your COMC settings) it's likely that a few will sell. If they sell, it will be an instant sale for 20% off your asking price. So if you list these at 95 cents, the Amazon ones will get you 76 cents.
If you list 100 of them to eBay as one lot, fixed price of $95 with best offer, it's likely that someone will make you an offer on the entire lot.
To see if base cards sell, you can check the sales history of certain cards from that player or set. Some do, some don't. In reality, 100% of cards will sell on COMC, but some will sell for less than it costs to post them. My recommendation would be to zero in on players or sets where the cards tend to sell faster than they are submitted (that is, the number sold is much higher than the number on the site). Sometimes these aren't obvious. Some of the biggest sellers are not superstars, but local stars or minor stars.

The one thing I always hate though....
When I price a new batch and a handful of cards are already bought straight up without offers...makes me feel like I underpriced them...
When I do get offers on a new batch though, I never compromise for at least the first month...
I know, I'm a hypocrite
