If the Tigers can get some pitching help, why not? TIgers are in the same spot as the Rays are with David Price, but I think the price for Scherzer would be higher.

Zero to none
Difference being the Rays can't afford Price. The Tigers will pay anybody for anything at any amount, as seen in the past.

I think as long as Mike Ilitch is breathing, this won't happen. I think the minute he stops, all bets are off. No idea if his kids will have the same level of commitment.

Same team that signed Fatty Fielder for a billion dollars when they had a 1B, but cant afford arguably a top 5 pitcher in baseball

See the New York Yankees now as evidence of that. It appears that Hal Steinbrenner has the same business acumen his dad had but doesn't have the same kill everyone mentality George had.

Who said they can't afford it? Illitch has enough dough to buy the Red Sox if he suddenly developed dementia and bad taste.

It's not that they can't afford him, it's that they can probably get some good prospects by trading him. Why not trade him away if they can get some talent that will be ready in a year or two?

Because Fielder will be useless in two years and you'll have wasted two of Miggy's best seasons by doing that. THESE are the years you win.

By signing Scherzer you have locked in the best starting rotation baseball had this year for at least the next 5 years. With this team, you don't need much in the way of prospects for a while.

You would trade three to four years of possibly a top-5 pitcher in baseball for two or three prospects? What are the odds any of them ascend to that level?
