View Full Version : Goudey baseball could be a sleeper
With autos of Dice-K, Michael Jordan, TIGER WOODS, Sidney Crosby, Emmitt Smith, Gordie Howe, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Lebron James, John Wooden, Ladainian Tomlinson, Mia Hamm, Peyton Manning, etc. Some fun ones to chase. Of course, this is from the sell sheet and we all know how UD can mislead.
I think the Tiger auto alone will help this one float if some really exist. Thoughts?

F UD cards. go with a sure thing, spend a few hundred bucks on an UD certified memorabilia auto.. at least you know you'll get the auto you want LOL.
but i understand the chase. I'm just as much of a gambler as the next degenerate, but buying upperdeck is almost like playing russian roulette, except after you're done ripping to find out you got shafted, you'll wish you won russian roulette!
:)!
After the Spectrum scam, I will wait on all UD BB products to see who is actually in the checklist.

UD is a loser 9 out of 10 times. This may be the 1 in 10 but not worth the risk. They are trying to copy the success of the Topps retro releases and I have little confidence they will be able to deliver.

Tim you are not the first person I have heard this opinion from. My hobby shop friend says hates UD but thinks this could be a good product. Provided UD sticks with the planned checklist. This is obviously UD's version of A & G so they need to get it right if they want to compete.

Where is the information/detail on this? Kinda like Sportkings, these "mixed" products may be creating a whole new genre of collectors!

Anyone know what the price point is? If it's available at retail, I will probably get into it pretty heavy. I like retro sets, and I love the idea of cards other than baseball players.
For me, give me an Eiffel Tower over an ARod. I just don't care about any veteran baseball player at all. ARod has hundreds of cards every year. The Eiffel Tower has had what? Three?
Then again, since I sell most everything I pull, make it an ARod for me.

I could see this being a big hit with old school set builders. If they have SPs ala Heritage and a decent auto checklist I could see people chasing these. Not sure its a sleeper anymore or if it ever really could be considered one because I think alot of people were/are planning on breaking cases.
IMO there are only 2 ways I can see this product tanking :
1.) Set is TOO EASY to build so there isn't much of a chase aspect and singles basiclly sell at common prices instead of SP prices.
2.) Old school, vintage style Topps set builders are just that....old school vintage style TOPPS set builders.

with 1 auto & 1 G/U per box and around a $90/box price tag - you'll be lucky to get 1/4 of your money back unless you hit one of the big name autos.

I thought the same thing about A&G this year but it seems everyone who ripped cases and sold sets did great with that. Plus I believe the big hits in A&G (autos, rip cards, plates) were mostly 1 maybe 2 per case. Granted it is UD but since its a first for them, I would think they'd want to put out a vintage type product that can compete with the ones done by Topps. With an auto and relic per box and 40 Sps, #'d parallels, 1/1s and original buybacks it seems like there is enough there to be kind to those who break multiple cases.
I myself am passing as I have passed on A&G, Heritage etc. I haven't done any of the "old style" cases since Heritage in 04. I'm not big on listing 100 different auctions on fleabay and I don't build sets so its a waste of time for me. I like the high end stuff more plus I've decided to dip into breaking hoops boxes for the first time in quite awhile because of the rookie crop. Between Bowman Chrome, new 07 football, 07-08 hoops and hockey the funds are going to be streatched out worse than the waistband on a pair of 5 year old underwear.
i just ordered a 20 box case of retail blind - no info. fingers crossed lol.
Phil (or anyone else who has an opinion),
I know you have done well with retail before. However, it seems to me that some products (bowman draft, a and ginter, heritage) have similar content to hobby and are strong, whereas others are just a shadow of their hobby counterparts (star wars is a good example). So my question is: how do you know in advance if retail will be strong or weak relative to the hobby counterpart? (I know with Goudey you said you are gambling, so this is more a general question.)
i usually get retail sell sheets from the local wholesaler i deal with.

I believe that the tiger & durant etc. autos are found in the sports royalty insert, and found only in the box loader packs in HOBBY boxes.
I could be wrong, but that is how I read it.
~Bryun
The big autos (the non-baseball autos as well as some baseball legends) are in the Sports Royalty Insert.
