1987 was the best year in card design across the board IMO. Topps, fleer, and donruss sets were great looking cards.

87 topps was always my favorite as a kid. I think it was because the similarity between the border on them, and the fake wood paneling in the basement of the house I grew up in lol

Ha. I've toyed with the idea of doing signed sets of 84 Topps or possibly 87 Topps.

I would personally go with 1984 since there are a couple guys that don't sign their 87 topps at all, can't remember the guys name off the top fo my head but there are only about 4 or 5 in existance, would be great if you could knock one of those out of the way but would also be easier to jump into the 1984
either way GOOD LUCK!!! it's fun doing a set signed

I agree with the guy that said 87. I think all three major sets were really nice that year.

1987 for me. My grandmother got me the Christmas set that holiday season. It's the first time I'd ever seen cards and how I got started collecting. Her and I sat and went through that entire box individually on Christmas Eve at her house. I still have that set and that box, and it won't be going anywhere. Ever.

84 Fleer for me. I was putting together the Cubs team set, and took me forever to find the last card. Found it on the front of a cello pack in a Eckerd's drug store:

1986 topps, since it was the first i ever put together from packs. been wanting to buy a few boxes just to do it again even though I know it is a waste of $$$
Besides that '87 Donruss, Maddux, Bo, McGwire, Bonds, Larkin Palmeiro Rookies, great set.
And of course '89 Upper Deck.

My favorite set as a kid was 1985 Topps. I just loved the slanty banner resting up against the circular logo, with the player names in the little crevice underneath.
As far as people who want to try for autographed sets, I wouldn't do 1987 Topps for two reasons: 1. it seems like most people trying for a set have picked that one, and 2. Ricky Wright won't sign his card, and Dick Howser died relatively soon after release...also, guys like Bo Diaz and Donnie Moore only had a window of a couple years to sign their card. I would pick a Fleer or Donruss set that only has 660 cards instead of Topps' 792, personally.
I started getting 1985 Fleer (and its Update set) autographed in 2005 after I graduated college, and am still more than 100 cards away from finishing. I got sidetracked when I decided to start getting the Heritage Minors sets signed. Other than getting Sammy Stewart at a show a couple weeks ago, I haven't added to the Fleer set in a long time.

That's quite a challenge! 500+ cards in 6 years is good. Took me 10 years to do 59/60 1964 Topps Giant sized cards. I'm sure you'll have some good stories of tracking down the last handful. I drove 3 hours to a minor league game when I need Floyd "Sugar Bear" Rayford for an O's yearbook. Good luck on the journey!
Oh, and 1980 is my fav.

In baseball, I would go 1986 Topps, followed by 1984 Topps. Football, 1985 Topps, followed by 1984 Topps.

1987 Topps bought at Woodruff's Grocery
Tim the owner didn't carry Donruss or Fleer, so all the kids in town only traded Topps back and forth.
