well joseph is only 22, valle is nothing worth to wait for anymore IMO and Rupp, ehh i was never a fan of him so i'm bias when it comes to him. but for what was on the market and how great Ruiz is at calling a game, i didn't want him to go. people outside the phillies will shake their heads at the deal, but they don't get how good of a catcher he really is.

3 years is a little too long for someone like Ruiz on a team like Philly who isnt gonna win anything in that time frame. The AAV isnt bad but why go 3 years?

I can't always follow the NL East as closely as I would like. How is Ruiz behind the plate?

I know on my team the casual fans are always looking at the offensive production from the catcher, and then the caught stealing % as a distant second. I am more interested in the Pitching ERA for each catcher, or Win % for each catcher.

he's very good, one of the best IMO at calling the game.

The next Phillies GM is REALLY going to hate Ruben Amaro Jr.

Not upset about this, but you have to wonder why this team keeps spending money like this unless they truly believe they can complete in the NL East now. Amaro must think that somehow the aging core of Utley, Rollins, and Howard can somehow recapture 2008 for one last go. And to me, that is the epitome of why Amaro sucks. We need a youth infusion and you can't get that if you keep resigning these guys on 3 year deals.

The Rollins deal was horrible. You could have gotten the same production from Freddy Galvis and similar, if not better, defense. But, RAJ didn't want to tick off the fans and lose the string of sellouts. Now, that's out the window.

As for Chooch, it looks as though we're going to have a lot of young pitchers. Chooch is a great defensive catcher and great at calling a game. While he is 35, he didn't become a catcher until after he was drafted, so he isn't old in "catcher" years. Will this be a bad deal? In year 3, I think so. But in years 1 and 2, I think we'll be glad.

As for why -- he allegedly had a 2 year $20 million offer on the table.

I know Rollins kind of sucks right now, but the deal he got was market value for a player like him. Look around at the dearth of major league caliber shortstops today.

This deal is too long at 3 years with a 4th year option. I wonder if Rupp gets traded this off-season now. THey had talked about moving Joseph due to his concussions to another position. I could see him as backup in 2015 assuming he isn't moved and then platooning in 2016.

"Allegedly"...and it was speculated that this was a leak put out by his agent.

I agree that we're not going to be upset year 1 and 2. Ultimately our young catchers just didn't put up the stats to warrant the trust that they could take over. We needed a catcher, so they did what they had to do. Hopefully he works well with Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and that turns into a good acquisition.

Freddy cannot hit day to day. He proved that this year. His future is as a utility player. The Rollins contract did not hurt his growth. He is what he is.

I believe the contract is up this year, which is good and bad. They have nobody better, but please oh please do not overpay Rollins...If he at least put forth full effort it wouldn't bother me so much.

This is my major problem with Amaro.....he always goes the extra year and it always burns him (see Ibanez, every 2-yr deal for a reliever). I would have rather seen them go 2-yrs and $21 than this deal, that if you belvie teh alledged $20M offer. I know the per year is a lot less, but it doen't handcuff you in the 3rd year when Ruiz is a 37 year old catcher.

I just hope Ryno plays it that way, I know Charlie would not have. I'm holding out hope that Ryno sits Howard against LHP and plays Ruf at 1B. The salary you are paying a guy is a sunk cost, you need to put out the best lineup to win and that involves sitting Howard againt LHP.....or platooning Chooch in 2016 with a young kid.

I love Chooch, but this should've been a two year deal. This team is so damn old. If Chooch hits .275 with 30 doubles and handles the pitchers like he always does, then I'll be very happy. I hope he comes to spring training in awesome shape.

I don't know if this deal is going to work out, though. Time will tell, and I suspect there will be some really bad offers made to the free agent catchers.

I'm happy with it .His value is in defence and is a good game caller.

This is going to be an awful deal in year two. He is already showing signs of breaking down and he plays a position that accelerates it.

I wouldn't be shocked if his line next year is .250, 15 doubles, 40 RBI and that is the best you get for the next three seasons.
