I know that there are a lot of these threads but I didn't want to hijack one of those threads.
I've been looking into buying silver and I just wanted people's opinions. Mainly I'm looking at buying silver as an investment that would be passed on in the future. I'm just wondering if by doing this approach if it's smart to diversify the silver I buy or if it would be ok to just buy one type of thing (bars).
I really just don't get the purpose of coins, especially the decorative ones and what not. Are they really just meant for collectors?

I am in the same boat as you are. I just got into investing in silver, and I went with a 10 oz. JM bar and 10 American Standing Eagles. I have been collecting coins for years so I am partial to the ASE's because I love the design, so I decided to go with them.

If your investing in silver you should buy silver close to spot as possible so you can get the best bang for your buck. Pretty much bars are the best way to get your moneys worth. Coins like ASE always cost a premium but they are widely known and people love the design.

I agree with Cardinalsfan. I buy bars and love them this far. How much are you willing to spend to start off?

Don't pay premiums if you're just investing in the silver content. Buy cheap generic coins or bars. Buy as close to spot price as possible.

Thanks for all the help. I'm looking at an initial $1500 investment and then probably buying about $200 a month for a while.

Either a few places in and around town that offer good prices or online sites that I see everyone here using. Really will just depend on the price though that I can get.

Hit up smackvay he will always give you a good deal when your dropping that kind of dough. He's always been straight up with me.
If you want to invest, don't buy bullion. Buy numis and be patient. The value is not dependent on the content, it's based on scarcity of the mint/design.
You buy bullion if you want to hedge against crappy paper money. Not to invest

Really it all boils down to what your preference is. Lots of folks are straight up bars/rounds for silver content. Lots of folks like the silver content but like the secondary numismatic value.
Personally, I like "junk silver" dollars and ASE's. That is what I buy - You buy what you like too. You will be much happier in the long run.

buy 100 ounce bricks if you are only doing it for pure silver investment.

Awesome that's a good start. Like John says buy 100oz bricks for pure investment. I think it's a great way to go. If your looking to stay in the range you mentioned look at 50oz bars.
