I know a fellow marine and a fellow collector online who went to help save them.
I haven't seen the movie yet.

Great book, can't wait to see the movie. The author really, really dislikes the media and I can't say that I blame him!

It was a good movie...if you're into watching Seals fall off a cliff and get shot up in super close ups.
But seriously it's a good movie, seemed like one wrong move after the next by them, like each decision was based off emotions and not a technical aspect.

I know that overwhelming numbers outweigh abilities but it seems like 4 SEALs with advanced weaponry and high ground should've been able to defend better. But I'm not a military guy so what do I know. Plus hindsight is 20/20
Great movie.

I think it wasn't so much as the overwhelming numbers, but the overwhelming numbers having the high ground. He repeatedly stated in the book that if they had been in a better defensive position he thought they would have been able to make a successful stand.

I missed that part of your quote. I haven't watched the movie yet so they may have changed it, but in the book the SEALS absolutely did NOT have the high ground. In fact they were literally on the side of a mountain below the Taliban fighters. The fighters were shooting downhill at them and then eventually flanked them and had them surrounded on three sides. It is amazing that any of the SEALS made it five minutes in those conditions, let alone one of them surviving.

In the movie the Taliban started below them but it's possible they got higher. It was a lot to follow in the movie
I'll probably read the book.

Ok, guess they changed it. Wonder why they would do that? Anyway, the book specifically says that the Taliban had the higher ground and the reason that the SEALS fell down the mountain was to fall back and try and regroup.

I could be wrong as well but they definitely had higher position on the village with the HVT in it.

It's important to note that the book/movie were suposedly horribly inaccurate.

Luttrell wrote the book right? I'm surprised it would be inaccurate.

Yes, with Patrick Robinson.
You should definitely read the book if you liked the movie. Sounds like they definitely changed some stuff so would be good to have the story the way Luttrell wrote it. I'm not sure how it could be inaccurate, as far as the actions of the four SEALS. Per the title, the author is the only one who can say if it is truthful or not.

This is not my writings, just what someone else posted.
I was really, really disappointed to learn that the book Lone Survivor is full of inaccuracies, as I thought it was fantastic aside from his LIEBERALS ARE THE DEVIL #@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@. As a result of the inaccuracies, though, the movie, based on the book, is probably going to be highly inaccurate at best. The book itself was ghost-written by a British military *fiction* writer while Luttrell himself was in Iraq, so that should give you some clue as to how well the book portrays reality.
The inaccuracies of the book range from the benign (the naming of the operation - it was Operation Red Wings, not Redwing), to the extremely important (the number of enemy wasn't in the hundreds, or even dozens - the number of enemy in Luttrell's After Action Report was 20-35, though later intelligence imagery analysis put it more at 10-15. However, the book states *hundreds*, which is wildly inaccurate [and really isn't even possible in such a remote area of Afghanistan, especially for a low level guy like Ahmad Shah aka Ben Sharmak], and the number seemed to increase with every appearance he made afterwards). There are plenty more errors in the links below, such as stating that Operation Red Wing was entirely a SEAL / SOF operation (it wasn't - it was mainly a Marine one), saying that their target was a "mid level commander," and knew bin Laden, when he was a low level guy with 8-10 men under his command in an extremely remote part of Afghanistan, and more inaccuracies listed in the links below.
He also said that the Taliban and Al Qaeda were in league with Saddam Hussein - which is completely, verifiably, and demonstrably false. Also, "Throughout his text he confuses, Taliban, Al Qaeda, Shia, Sunni, and other groups, while ignoring the other militants in Afghanistan." - See more at: He Got The Title Wrong? and 6 More Mistakes from Luttrell's "Lone Survivor" - On Violence (http://onviolence.com/?e=234#sthash.3qYpw3Ej.dpuf)
Those errors, plus his #@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@ politicization of decent-sized portions of the book, makes this book pretty much worthless as far as a tale of what *actually* happened on those mountains. Personally, I don't really think we'll ever know what truly happened on that mountain. The best information we have to go on are the official after action reports, interviews from other military members involved in Operation Red Wing (such as many of the Marines involved and the findings of the rescue/recovery teams), and the intelligence reports written after the mission.
Those three other SEALs died heroically, to be sure - but I just don't see how we can trust Luttrell's account in his book (once again - Ghost written by a British military *fiction* writer), given the massive disparities between his account in his book, and his own official After Action Reports, as well as other accounts from other forces involved with Operation Red Wing.

Saw it yesterday, amazing movie. My GF and I go to the movies at least once a week, and every time we go there is always some rude jackass in one form or another.
Even in the quietest scenes in this movie, you could hear a pin drop. (The theater was full, and it was a big one)
I've been to two movies where people have clapped at the end and this was one of them

Saw it tonight. Very hard to watch the post movie pics. Tough to see our guys get beat up like that. Wasn't pretty at all.
I never would have let all the sheep/guys free. Not saying I would have killed them, but I never would have just let them walk. That cost all of them dearly.
In the end, it was one of the most powerful films I have ever seen.
