Hello all!

Just thought I'd share a little personal story.

So, I'm a huge Star Trek fan.

In 1994 I was living in Seattle and a freshman in college. Two of my classmates - fellow Star Trek fans - told me they were going to an upcoming Star Trek convention and asked if I wanted to come along. The whole notion of a "fan convention" was somewhat foreign to me; conventions 20 years ago were of a different nature and scale than they are nowadays. I'd never been to one but I thought it would be fun.

The convention was structured differently from modern cons. There were only two guests - Marina Sirtis and one of the ST:NG visual effects guys. I paid around $40 to get in the door, but that included one autograph from Marina Sirtis. After both guests spoke, we got in line to get autographs. I got my 1992 Impel STNG Inaugural Edition card signed and Ms Sirtis was very nice and pleasant. After that we hit the small dealers room to spend some money. I had a lot of fun.

On a side note, 1992 Impel STNG Inaugural Edition was and still is one of the best Star Trek card sets ever produced… in my personal opinion. It was a very comprehensive set that really dug into the characters and technology of the show with some really nice graphic design elements. This product really was all about the base set. Plus, the character cards were designed with some nice empty space, making them excellent for IP autographs. A sealed box can now be had for about $15 on ebay and of the 4 or 5 boxes I've purchased over the years, each one netted me 2 full base sets, 2 holograms and a complete set of the Language Cards insert set. Highly recommended.

So, fast forward exactly 20 years. There was an upcoming Comic Con in my city and Jonathan Frakes was one of the guests. Number One was my favorite character so I was excited to finally meet him. I pulled out my Impel Riker card and went to the convention. Full disclosure - I was also there to work as I'd volunteered to shoot VJ interviews for the station I work at. We got to interview Jonathan Frakes, Ray Park, John Morrison (Johnny Nitro), Adam Baldwin and Pink Ranger Catherine Sutherland. After the interviews, I got in line to formally meet Frakes and get him to sign my card. He was very nice and talked with me for a few minutes, mostly about his directing career which was what I was mostly interested in.

In the end, it took twenty years, but I finally got a pair of in-person autographs from two of my favorite characters from a show I loved. As I'm sure a lot of folks here will agree, IP autographs have little monetary value but have a great deal of personal value for fans, especially if the experience getting them was enjoyable.

Anyway, sorry for the length and thanks for reading my little story. Here's the cute couple…

I agree about the IP autos. I have a bunch of IP signed CDs that for the most part have little value, but mean the world to me. Most of them are from indie acts and artists unknown outside Canada, but each one is a memento of some time spent talking to my favorite artists and of a great show.

And sometimes I get lucky, like my signed Tegan And Sara CD from 1999(I have one that says Sara And Tegan :) ). A rare indie pressing of their first CD when they were lucky to get 40 people at a show... Now they are getting huge and this CD is skyrocketing in value :)

That's very cool! Especially having a rare item like that signed.

I have a decent number of 8x10's, but most of the times that I have a chance to get an autograph, I try to get creative. I have a number of books, CD's, DVD/BluRay's and trading cards I've gotten signed.

Yeah, I have mostly CDs, but also:

Headshots
Tour Posters
Setlists
Signed guitar picks
Books of poetry and art prints

Working backstage venue security for 8 years certainly helped my collection

I have a NSYNC signed poster they gave me back in, oh 1998 or 1999. I should think about selling it now that JT is getting huge again.

I have met Britney Spears before she got really famous, when she played a 2000 seat place in Sasaktoon before Baby Hit Me.... got huge. Don't have her
personalized auto anymore, must have sold it 10 years or so ago.

I have had tea with Gene Simmons and a beer and a 10 minute chat with Dimebag Darrell....

The other thing I collect is ticket stubs from shows I have attended. Must have a few hundred by now. Again, not much value other than sentimental but I will likely never get rid of them.

Now I feel old.....

Working in TV for the last 16 years has put me in a similar fortunate situation. Guests pop in to do publicity and I can chat with them before they go on air.

Not the biggest celebrity I've ever met, but still my favorite, was meeting Kane. He was always my favorite wrestler and he came to our morning show to promote that night's Smackdown. Coolest, most low-key guy... we talked between segments for an hour and a half. Mostly about politics and basketball...?!?

Unless your hard-up for money, I'd hold on to that NSYNC poster, that's a great keepsake and a great story!

Yeah, I might keep it. You will have to pry the Dimebag auto out of my cold dead hands. Pantera was/is one of my favorite bands.

Yeah, good luck getting anyone with Dimebag memorabilia to part with it!

Most of my autos are on 8x10's, but I'm gonna see Allison Scagliotti at the Sci-Fi Expo next month, and I'm considering getting her to sign the Claudi maquette I have.

Oh, and I got Danny Trejo to sign a machete when I met him at Frightmare.

Allison is gonna be huge at that show no doubt.

Trejo was a blast when I met him in 08 when Wizard World sucked and had Frightmare merge with them for a show....at least I think that was Frightmare. Had Corey Feldman as the main guy.
