I don't get the popularity of "jumbo" patches..

Especially the plain one color ones. Basically the whole card becomes a patch. Nothing great about it since who knows where it really came from.

Even the multi colored from NT don't look all that amazing. I kind of prefer the smaller immaculate ones /99

All patches are not created equal! I agree. If a card has a jumbo window that's mostly jersey, it's not very appealing. Sometimes there are exceptions though, like Pete Maravich. To me, any Pete Maravich patch is a good patch.

People are paying $1500 for Durant Immaculate Letters. If you want to see something truly sick, pick up a real gamer and you can have all 6 letters, a logoman, a tag, numbers patches, and name patches.

The answer to that question, or at least for me it is, that you gotta be a jersey collector. I'm a card collector, and would pay a high amount on a card I like, and not for a jersey. If we were on a bottle cap forum, I'd bet there would be people who would pay $1500 for a Durant bottle cap! :D Same goes for sneakers, some love them, while I don't, and would only like a piece on a card. You get the point...

Point is, some people like to buy the whole elephant in the back yard because they're animal lovers/collectors, and others like to collect just the tusk! :)

For me its resale, you can easily move cards for their market value, but with game used jerseys, it seems people aren't willing to pay as much from a private seller compared to the proper companies

Maybe I am old an out of touch but I actually miss cards. I don't get very hype about material cards and such. The trend of these tiny little shots or floating heads with a HUGE jersey just look weird to me.

That said, some of those NT patches people posted last year were nice looking cards.

That's what I was getting at earlier. While I don't like patches myself, I see why modern collectors would get down with them. I think they may have become a bit ubiquitous but some can be cool looking. I just think when it looks like some of those Immaculates above it looks silly to me. I mean the cropping makes some of these players look like amputees.

End of the day, collectors are free to collect what they love and while you may not "get it", there are others that love it. I'll take my vintage all day but I'm sure there are some out there that would not spend 5k on a beat up, wrinkled PSA 1 52 Mantle when I would drool all over it.

Jumbo patch doesn't mean the card is designed well. Certain companies should stick to jumbo patches so there terrible designs are less noticeable.

Although Panini did put out flawless and that set might be the best combo of a good design and jumbo patches i have ever seen. Same with those Black Gold patches. They just put out too much stuff that doesn't seem to be thought out.

That's a great card, but if it had the same size patch as the premium patch autos, like this Kobe, it would be pretty incredible.

Also just think of all the different patch variations in a set such as Immaculate. /99, /25, numbers variation, jumbo, /100, /25 etc etc. Thats a lot of patches of just one player in one set...

a lot of factors go into the design of a card. paninis poor photo cropping and placement is a huge negative on their designs.

If someone's missing half their head then, yes, that is a problem (although I can't actually recall seeing any such cards). I think you might be the only person that has a problem with part of the ball or player's arm being cutoff by a patch window etc, however.
