Seems the term is thrown around way too liberally these days. IMO a 5-tool guy has to be at least above average, if not plus, in all 5 tools.
Albert Almora and Joc Pederson also come to mind in addition to the ones that have been posted.

Almora doesn't hit for power and Joc doesn't exhibit plus speed. The only one that I'm holding my breath for is David Dahl, barring any setbacks from injuries.

Joc stole 31 bases last year. He may not have plus speed but the combination of his above average speed plus good instincts seems to help his speed to play up in games.

You are correct. However, per your initial argument, he isn't a *5-tool* player, per se. He hits, hits for power, has a plus arm, average speed, and is a good fielder (not great).
Wouldn't Corey fit the criteria better?

Correction = he doesn't exhibit PLUS speed.

The five tools are...
1. Power
2. Speed
3. Average
4. Arm
5. Fielding
In my opinion in order to be considered a five tool player you need be plus in each category.
Buxton, Taveras and Polanco come to mind.
There are many good all round players but not many 5 tool players.

This is so true. I still get pissy when people say that Trout is a 5-tool guy.

What tool do you think he doesn't possess?

so stat wise: .300 avg, 25 + HR and 25 + SB, plus GG caliber def? I forgot about Taveras. And iv never looked up stats about Polanco. The other guys mentioned im not sure about them being 5 tool worthy

Baez is a 3 tool player. But hes exceptional in those 3 tools.

Yeah, that would be the only tool he doesn't have plus stuff with but I'd say he still has at the least an average arm. Everything else he has above average to plus stuff with

If Trout is not a 5-tool player, I am not sure there has ever been one.

I'd agree that he is the closest thing we have seen to a 5 tool player in quite some time.

If you go by the graphic at the bottom of this January Baseball Prospectus ranking (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22664), the players with five tools at or above average are:
Byron Buxton
Gregory Polanco
Chris Owings
Rougned Odor
Corey Seager
Joc Pederson
Reese McGuire
Arismendy Alcantara
Raimel Tapia
David Dahl
With the caveat that having five tools at or above average doesn't necessarily make a player a better prospect than someone with fewer, better tools.

Chris Owings? From what I've heard he is lacking in the power category.

The league slugging percentage across the MLB last year was .396. BP gave him a 5 (average) for power, so he's not going to be in a home run derby, but he can probably slug league average.

He's a 4 tool player and I think even he would admit it. He has a fringe arm.

Alcantara is about as borderline as can be. He has average power and an average average.

I'm a big fan of McGuire, but I'm not sure what kind of hit and power tools he will have. BP is a lot higher on him than most, so I would put an * next to him. For now at least.

Yes, his arm. It's an average arm. To me, a player has to be above average in all 5 categories. Not exceptional in 4 and ok in the 5th.

No way many listed are FIVE tool players.
Being ok or slightly better than ok in category is not five tool.
Guys like mondesi, Owings, Goodwin, Baez, Alcantara, McGuire, Seager.... Not five tool
I consider five tools means they basically would get an A if graded in one of the 5 tool categories.
