The relic is damaged. :( There are holes in the piece of the bat. You can't see them well in the picture, one is near the bottom center of the relic.
Is this quality in a bat relic common? I'm collecting the set so it's kind of irreplaceable to me, plus it's Ty Cobb not just some current player with tons of bats laying around.
I guess I'm happy to have it two years after redeeming it but can't help but be a bit disappointed.

Id be more concerned at the color of the "Wood" for being 100 Years old sure looks good...I bet Topps has glory holes drilled all over their corporate office and uses the material for relics.

If Topps says it is real, then for all intents and purposes, it is real.
I don't get all the hand-wringing about relics. It is like autographs... once they are authenticated by PSA or JSA then they are real.
The wood could be from the inside of a Cobb bat. Color wouldn't matter. It could also be from an Albert Belle 1994 bat... and it wouldn't make a lick of difference.
Edit: OP, sorry for the thread hijack. Call a Topps representative and ask what they can do for you. Or, alternatively, if you don't mind saying goodbye to it for a little while, mail it back to them and ask for a replacement.

Lol'd at the glory holes idea - the size seems about right?

What I find more disturbing is the fact Topps is now making redemption cards for relic cards now. What's next? Are they going to make redemption cards for non-auto/non-relic parallel cards?

I sent in my redemption for this card almost exactly 2 years ago so I'm glad to see its finally being made. I agree though, after a 2 year wait, you might expect a more quality relic. Good luck with the rest of your set.

Or it could be from the center of the bat....But yeah the sky is falling.

You have to understand it's not like there are 1000 Ty Cobb bats just laying around ready to be cut up. If the relics are real Topps most likely had to buy a bat out of someone's personal collection to make the relics. Plus the wood is old so it most likely is the inside of the bat. The wood dries out and would easily cracked when being cut for the relics.

Cracks/holes in the wood....plus looks like Topps might be trying to shave that bat as thin as possible to get the most out of it. Can't blame them for that I guess

It's scary just how accurate a metaphor for Topps' current business model this is. "We know you're hopelessly addicted to the chase of buying cards, so just stick your money through this hole, then drop your pants, turn around, and take what we decide to give you."

Go cut down a tree and tell me how old the wood inside the tree looks.

I would just be pissed it isn't an on card auto.
