Group Case Breaks - what's the deal?

Is there an FAQ section on the forums somewhere for the group case breaks? Was looking in that section and didn't really see any info on how that all works. I get the general idea but there seems to be different variations of the breaks. Opinions on whether there are a good investment or not? Thanks everyone.

There are a few sticky's in the group break section but they are more geared towards the hosts of the breaks. What are your questions? I bet there are several people here, myself included, who can help answer them.

Each break has different rules, pick selections, and formats. It is best to find a break you're interested in and read the rules within that break.

I get the team, but what does draft or random mean? Also what is the thing about doing random four time or whatever? Sorry for all the questions.

random means you will be assigned a random team.

draft means you get to pick the team that you want.

random number is the number of randoms one does for each list (list of participants, list of teams)

Ok so for instance the tribute case break. There are 96 spots and its a draft.

Essentially you are drafting for 1 card. Correct??

Draft or random:

2013 Bowman Draft 12 box case team random. In this break you would have 30 spots and 30 teams - both lists would be randomed and matched. You would get a random team.

2013 Bowman Draft 12 box case team draft. In this break you would have 30 spots and 30 teams also - but only the spots (participant list) would be randomed. The random would create the draft order. The first name on the list picks first and can have any team, the second name then picks any remaining team... the last name gets whatever team is left.

In a hit draft break, you would pick from a hit list after the break based on the spot/participant random.

For the Tribute question, there will be a list in that break as some "hits" may be base lots for instance.

One of Houdini's nightly breaks is a great way to start. They are cheap and you will start to learn how things work. His nightly ones are random's and you usually get 2 teams per spot. Also he usually has a bonus prize to be randomized!!! :)

Yeah... if you want to jump in on something where you pay and break the same day, Houdini is the best. You really need to sign up for his emails to get started. He sends out emails every day telling you what group break is going that night. You click the link and sign up. He will usually break that same night.

Start with the assumption that you will hit nothing. Some people join breaks, pay $20-$30, and then complain if someone else gets the case hit. Think of it like you are buying at blaster at Target... ~$20 and 7 retail packs usually net you about 30 base cards.

Grab a cheap team random - that way all you have to do is pay and watch. You can also trade your spot/team after the random - this is some members' favorite part.

Then be sure to watch the live break and join in on the chat. I started breaking tonight at 10pm and I just finished... 5+ hours. Opened 2013 Bowman Sterling, 2013 Elite Extra Edition, and 2 cases of 2013 Bowman Draft. The chatroom is where you can build a lot of friendships on the forum.

This is random player instead of team, but same principle. You will get at least 18 chrome minis and probably 2 parallels. Bookyyyyyy is a good host with a good personality. First break I ever joined was his... he opened in a dorm room back then and his GF was in the chatroom as "bookyyyyylover" - he banned her and then had to apologize on the phone.

All of the breaks on Blowout have a random factor that can keep you from getting the team you want. If you like gambling, that's cool, but there are plenty of places out there where you can buy the team you want. That way you at least are guaranteed to get cards for your collection. That said, buying on Blowout guarantees you won't get ripped off. A lot of group breakers who own their own sites are doing it for profit, meaning you'll pay more.

Are group breaks a good investment? Financially, hell no. Paying to break boxes in this hobby is generally never ever a good financial investment. If you include entertainment value into your decision, then that's a different story.

Never done a break and dont ever plan to. Its much safer to invest in singles where you know what youre getting than gamble on wax/breaks IMO. Have seen the results of these breaks and the majority of the time you never come close to getting your moneys worth. Sure if you dont mind pissing away a couple hundred bucks to get a few base autos with the small chance of hitting it big but I prefer to know what im buying.

I like to open boxes and cases and I think that doing a couple of the group case breaks would be fun and interesting, especially depending on the product. But I agree it's a gamble because honestly I've never hit anything great in my cases. So in getting back into collecting I'm trying to find some thing to focus on and I agree that buying singles or even building sets is probably better. But I'll still pick a couple products and bust a case or a box just for the fun of it. And maybe do try a few group breaks. No hater comment here. :)

I will start you off.... The whole point of the hobby is the mystery and joy of opening the product. Not everybody collects as an investment. If you are in it for just the investment part of the hobby. That is good for you. You can leave it to us to open the product so you have a chance to make purchases.



As far as group breaking goes... It can be very beneficial or very bad. I have had cold streaks in group breaks pulling some of the bad teams and losing 90% of your spot price. That can also happen opening a random box of Bowman draft and hitting a $2 base auto. I have also hit $1,000+ cards in group breaks. It is basically the same as opening boxes except you can join a group break for half the price of a box and get an hour or so of entertainment. You are just paying basically a 10-15% markup for shipping and the breakers time sorting etc.

Here is the way I look at it.

Lets take a 10 case Bowman Break. Me personally, I would be buying a case of Bowman in hopes of and looking for Byron Buxton Autos. So I can go buy a single case of Bowman and hope to hit a Buxton Auto. Or for the price of a single case of Bowman I can buy the Byron Buxton Auto spot and now have 10 cases worth an opportunity to get Buxton autos as opposed to 1.
