It was posted at NSU that Topps will be releasing a Dr. Who set...not a fan of the show myself, but I know a lot of people are.
From Ryan Cracknell
24 packs/box
8 cards/pack
200-card base set.
Lots of inserts.
2 total autographs, dual autographs, costume relics, prop relics, sketch cards, medallions or printing plates per box.
And yes, it appears the autographs are stickers.

I think it means there is a some combination of 2 of all those major hits per box, not 2 total autographs.

I wonder if this set will ever materialize? Inkworks had the license before they went out of business, and then Rittenhouse was rumored to have the license (along with Merlin, which never saw the light of day either.)
By all accounts, the BBC is notoriously difficult to work with...

I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Liz Sladen at two conventions prior to that one. I was part of the 'staff' for both, so got to have a couple of real conversations with her. A delightful lady in every way. She recognised me at the convention where she signed my sketch. We had a quick chat, she signed my sketch and then went on stage for a panel. She always had time for people. I was really sad when she passed away at such an early age.

Well the inserts sound a lot like Mars Attacks, which was also an 8 box case, except MAI had 3 types of autos and two types of props. DW has 2 types of autos and three types of props.
MAI was 4 autos, 4 props/plate, 8 sketches per case, so this may be similar. At worst you would think 2/6/8.

I still think Masterwork will be out well before Dr. Who. They gave Dr. Who that Dec. 10th date like 9 months ago, so you knew it was just a guess for late Q4. Masterwork got announced, got a target release date and appears to have a whole heck of a lot of sketch cards from top artists on their way to Topps right now - all in the time we haven't heard anything at all on Dr. Who.

I'm very torn on this product. As a Doctor Who fan I've been looking forward to it... but I expect Topps will produce it much like it does Star Wars.
I guess we haven't seen a checklist yet so it'll be interesting to see if there are lots of Doctor and Companion autos.... or more Dalek and Cybermen autos. Then if autos fall 1 every 3 boxes or so, it'll be nearly impossible to pull any good ones... like Star Wars.
Also there are the manufactured alien relics and the medallions that are considered hits. I know some Star Wars fans like the manufactured relics but it's not something I collect.
I'd really like to pick up a couple cases of this but not sure what to do. I do have higher hopes for the Buffy release next year.

Well, here's where I'm at with this - and it's just my total guess as to only one possible outcome - They can say it's about "licensing" all they want. It's about money. So, if the "license" ends up costing more, Topps may then re-solicit the product, looking for even more funds. They did cut off preorders quite early for a product with a targeted late Q4 release... Initially, this would tend to be better for those who bought in early on limited information (autos). Now, with this mess as an excuse, it just leaves the door wide open for Topps to run the presses if they end up having to recoup increased (and unexpected) costs. Topps has, at least, a year into the development at this point. I don't think they'll scrap it but the more "licensing" involved would seem to increase the chance of this becoming the non-sport equivalent of 2014 NFL Topps Chrome. (If you don't know what happened with that in the last 3 weeks, there's a 10+ page thread about how a company can destroy a decade old brand by producing nearly 12,000 cases of it in the football section)

For those who have been around the non-sport side a while, there have been a few failed attempts at putting out a comprehensive Dr. Who set. If I recall correctly, Rittenhouse secured the rights a number of years back and nothing ever became of it because the BBC has been an absolute horror to work with.
Not to stand in defense of Topps, but if they can pay for the rights to Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Transformers and the like, they can surely pop for the cost of Dr. Who.

Franchise licensing seems to be a complete nightmare when you get multiple parties who have, or had, rights to certain parts of its marketing. TMNT is a prime example. There were many items that never saw light of day due to the endless fighting over image/production rights between multiple entities. It's tiring as a fan/collector of these properties, that is for sure.

I remember hearing that too, Iggy. I think Inkworks had given up on the Who license long before they went out of business though- the promo cards were printed a few years before they closed up shop, if I remember correctly.
I remember thinking the set was never going to actually happen when I heard Topps had their turn with it.

Before Inkworks, Strictly Ink had the license.
Actually getting the license is just the first part. Everything has to be approved as you develop the product and that can be a constant battle. Sometimes they even approve stuff and then someone else unapproves it.

Thank you for that info and I will be sending a PM to Chris tonight. The reason i was asking is that I feel this falls into a different category of refund. I can understand if a product is scheduled for a firm release date, no refunds of preorders. But as we all feel with this product, I don't think at this point it will ever be released. It's been pushed back over 1 year already. If a product never releases, they HAVE to refund you, no exceptions.

Maybe Topps is trying to take the record for longest time between pre-sales and product shipping back from Cryptozoic?

I don't know any details or have any inside information. But I have heard that the BBC can be difficult to deal with when licensing. Maybe that's what is causing the delay and not Topps....?
Just a thought.

Maybe they want more 12th Doctor stuff in the set and are holding back to get some of that? As long as this set still happens I'll wait however long I need to for my 2 cases.

This has been mentioned 3 times on the previous page alone... it's well known that BBC is a pain to work with re: licensing.

Dr Who is now on Topps' release calendar for November 18. About a year late.
Also, from the information posted on Cardboard Connection, the set is radically different than the one I placed orders on last year.
The 2015 Topps Doctor Who base set is large by today's standards, clocking in at 200 cards. The majority of the base set focuses on characters, and is broken down into Doctors, Companions, Aliens and Villains. The final 35 cards cover every season of the show, with both the classic seasons and current series featured on Storyline cards. Parallels include Blue(#/199), Purple (#/99), Red (#/50) and Gold (1/1). There are also Printing Plates.
The set is complimented by several basic inserts which total 50 cards and touch on both the recent and distant history of the show. Memorable Moments (1:2 packs) cover key points in the show's first five decades. Just as there have been several Doctor's over the years, they have been joined by several partners. Companions (1:4 packs) spotlights them. The Doctor Is In (1:8 packs) showcases each of the primary Time Lords. Finally, Christmas Time (1:6 packs) honors the holiday specials, while Gadgets (1:12 packs) documents all the cool gear.
But what about the hits? Like the rest of the product, there's lots of variety. 2015 Topps Doctor Who hobby boxes have two total premium inserts. Base Autographs feature both Doctors and his companions and more rarity is offered with Blue (#/50), Purple (#/25), Red (#/10) and Gold (1/1) parallels, as well as autographed Printing Plates. In addition to basic autographs, there are Dual Autographs and Triple Autographs.
Relic cards come with a variety of items. On the memorabilia side, there are Costume Relics and Autographed Relics with wardrobe items used in the show. Collectors can also find TARDIS Patch Cards. These commemorative relics showcase the now-iconic time machine with multiple parallels, including Blue (#/100), Purple (#/50), Red (#/10) and Gold (1/1). There are also limited signed versions.
Estimated Release Date: 11/18/2015
Product Configuration: 6 cards per pack, 24 packs per box, 12 boxes per case
Price Point: Mid-End Entertainment Card
Target Audience: Doctor Who Fans, Autograph Collectors, Memorabilia Collectors, Set Builders
2015 Topps Doctor Who Box Break
2 Total Hits
2 Gadgets Inserts
3 The Doctor Is In Inserts
4 Christmas Time Inserts
6 Companions Inserts
12 Memorable Moments Inserts
144 Total Cards

No mention at all of prop cards
No mention at all of sketch cards :eek:
And STILL no confirmed signers. I've only heard crickets since I asked on Twitter and Facebook if the mock up cards shown on their site are confirmed signers.
I'll have to poll my customers and confirm they still want what they ordered a year ago, but would love to have an auto list to make the lack of props and sketches a little easier to take.

Boo to TARDIS patch cards. A single set based on a show with so much history shouldn't require manufactured patch cards for hits.

I forgot to post that I did talk to Topps at SDCC this year and they pretty much reiterated what Ed said in his post. The only other information that I got was that they had not finalize the contracts at the time but when they do, existing orders will be finalized and new ordering will open.
Also they had a list of 400? or more potential signers that they are working on getting, most they had never worked with other than people like Silas Carson (voice of the Ood) who signed for Star Wars. Signers will cover from the classic series up unto, but not including (BBC rules) the current season. Also there may be cuts...
I did ask about ratio of autos and they said it should be an about an auto every other box, so like a typical star wars configuration. I didn't even bother asking about sketches because if it took them this long to even get approval for cards, I wouldn't want to wait another 5-10 years for sketch approvals.
VincentVegaFFF
07-31-2015, 11:13 AM
Auto every other box? I don't like that if they're getting people like the guy who voiced the Ood as signers. If it was all a solid line up of Doctors or companions then fine but if they're going to fill the set out with people who had small roles in the show I would want one autograph per box.

07-31-2015, 11:31 AM
Have any sketch artists heard anything about if their art is going into packs? I didn't work on this set, I was curious if a "sorry, sketches are not being included" e-mail went out or if they're still working on approvals?

They should be able to get both Bakers to sign. They both have signed various stuff in the past. They should be able to get all of the Doctors, except maybe Capaldi. He declined to sign for his 1/6th scale figure from Big Chief but maybe he'll make an exception for these cards? Hope so.

Yeah, they'd probably have to hand him a sheet of stickers and pray he doesn't ask what the stickers are for. It's sad- his character was my favorite Doctor, however his distancing himself from anything Doctor Who the way his does really sours it for me. I have a good feeling after this next season I can finally say Capaldi is my favorite Doctor and not have mixed emotions about it the way I do Eccleston.

Right, forgot about him. He may be a problem, though from what I've read from people who have met him he's happy to sign Doctor Who stuff in person so there's a chance he might sign for this, though possibly in smaller numbers than the other Doctors.

Getting feedback that this is a 12 box case. Blowout is preselling this as an eight box case. If a case is pre-sold at Blowout's current price, does the price change with the number of boxes or is a case a case no matter what's inside. Wishful thinking here.

I bailed on this about a month and a half ago. With how much wasted time and effort they've had to put into this, I feel like they have absolutely no choice but to finish it and release it, in whatever capacity. If it did, indeed, go from the originally solicited 8 box cases to a 12 box case, that's a 50% production increase just to existing orders from nearly 2 years ago, lol! I figured they'd fish for a second round of orders since it's been so long which will likely end up being the case. This is just too much of a trainwreck for my liking. Maybe that means it'll be absolutely loaded and work out for everyone, though.

My dist called me today and yes, 12 box case is accurate. Was sent the following info, not sure if it's already out there somewhere but here:
"Experience Doctor Who's action-packed exploration of space and time! Featuring 250 trading cards. 200 base cars: 165 Character cards include doctors, companions, aliens and villains. 35 Storyline cards cover Classic Seasons (1963-1989) and Current Series (2005-2014). 4 Base Parallels - Blue #'d to 199, Purple #'d to 99, Red #'d to 50 and Gold #'d to 1. 50 Subset Inserts include Memorable Moments, Companions, Christmas Time, The Doctor is In and Gadgets. Look for 2 Hits per box! Hits include Autographs, Costume Relic Cards and Signed Costume Relic Cards, TARDIS Patch cards and Printing Plates."

I'm wondering how this is going to be handled as well. I have two cases on order now but if these are going to jump to near $1000 a case there's no way I'm getting two.

Maybe I'm that old get off my lawn guy but if you are the brand manager for Topps you shouldn't be tweeting directly to the people asking to sign cards. For some reason I thought I heard Capaldi's era was off limits, but if they do get him, that'd be something they'd really want to put out there way ahead of time, that would really give an extra boost to the set. I can't see it.
If I had to guess what five they have, pure speculation, I'd say Tennant, Smith, McGann, McCoy and Colin Baker. No way they'd get Eccleston. I'd say they're pushing for Tom Baker and John Hurt.
Sarek
10-21-2015, 11:32 PM

Capaldi didn't sign for his 1/6 action figure while Tennant, Smith and Karen Gillan did so he may not like to sign. no way they'll get Eccleston. I would guess for Doctors they have Tennant, Smith, Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. Classic companions should be a fairly easy get as well but I gather they want to make the set as new series focused as possible.
The good thing is Doctor Who is big enough to support multiple sets so hopefully we get another one next year with signers they missed this year.

I REALLY hope one of these "many more" is Wilfred Mott. That should be a relatively easy one to grab I would hope. I may just go after the Wilfred Mott Rainbow if they do =)
(Although he could technically be a Companion, I think for the sake of the card set they wouldn't include him in that category. But who knows?)

I think the BBC officially considers Wilf a comapanion. Certainly Astrid, Donna (pre-series 4), Jackson Lake, Lady Christina and Adeliade Brooke are even though I consider them debatable (and in the case of Adelliade certainly not) I can't see Wilf being the only one left out. A 10th Doctor, Donna, Wilf tripple autograph would be amazing!

Peter Davison was announced tonight on Twitter, and they are announcing another classic signer every night this week.
https://twitter.com/DarthVonOhlen/status/658772002887630848
My most wanted signature for the set is Ingrid Oliver, for sure. I think I might buy two boxes of this and then try and assemble the autographs I need after that. I have all of the Doctors already, so I could focus on guest stars and companions.

Maybe they didn't get Billie Piper? Who knows, mockups of Karen Gillan are on the sale sheet and we know Topps JUST reached out to her last week on Twitter, so I don't think she was ever a lock. Good to see Barrowman, not a huge shock but still good to see confirmation.
I think the thought that this Twitter campaign is their first attempt at getting some of these signers is a bit of a foolish notion. My guess, they went through the proper channels and were rejected, and this is more of a PR campaign than anything else. They can show publicly that they tried, and it puts the blame on the signers when they don't come through. Its childish, to say the least.

Very exiting then. Hartnell is unlikely given that he died before conventions were a thing. Troughton is a possibility and none I would love to see, Pertwee must have signed a ton of stuff along with Liz Sladen, Mary Tamm, Nic Courtney and producers Barry Letts and JNT. If I were a betting man I would say Pertwee, Sladen and Courtney are most likely.

I love the look of these cards, and I am strongly considering picking up a couple of boxes to try and assemble a base set and try for a few big hits, but most of the autographs I would want will probably not be very expensive (Jenny and Vastra will be mine).
For cut autos, I would love to see Troughton and Pertwee. I can't see them doing JN-T since casual/new series fans would have no idea who he is, but I would love to see a few Verity Lamberts inserted. She is, arguably, one of the two or three most important people in the history of the show. The only person I would definitely rank higher is Sidney Newman and I think he's an incredibly rare signature.

Hartnell is unlikely given that he died before conventions were a thing. I can't really see the reasoning behind that statement. William Hartnell was the very first actor to play Doctor Who. He loved making appearances in costume as the Doctor while his stories were originally airing. Conventions have never been the only source of autographs from TV and film stars. A cut signature from him would make a perfect inclusion in this in this set.
My ultimate combination would be a Three Doctors cut auto combination, probably as a redemption. With William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee all together. Now that would truly be an awesome inclusion :)!
As far as other possibilities are concerned, I already have my own personal 'ultimate' Elisabeth Sladen autograph...though not on a card:

Oh, yes it would amazing to have him in the set, I'm just thinking in terms of ease for Topps. Hartnell autos are out there but how many have survived in good enough shape over the past 40 years? Probably not very many, unless they were given access to his personal paperwork by his family. I just think the actors who have passed away more recently would be easier for them with more choices for autographs out there. I guess we'll see.

I don't necessarily disagree. I would just say it is the "current" logo, and its probably the graphic that is approved to use for any "current" Dr. Who merchandise.

When you see single boxes like that, keep in mind that these guys are opening cases till they get what they feel are the big hits of the case and sell the rest off at or below cost. Now, you can still make out well with inserts, parallels, bonus hits in boxes , and just plain miscalculations in thier part.
I'd also gamble at that price even knowing they opened other boxes.
If can get a sealed case at that price per box,now that would be a steal.

I'm confused then. The sell sheet says 2 hits per box and suggests hits are autos, wardrobe, TARDIS patches and printing plates but the odds don't add up to 2 hits per box at all. As far as I can see the patches are one every two boxes. What's up with that?

The patches are 1 per box. The costume relics are about 5.2 per case, the autos 5.5 per case, and printing plates about 1.3 per case.
So a case will have 12 patches, ~5 costume relics, 5-6 autos, and 1 printing plate.

24 packs per box
Autographs: 1:123 packs (1 in 5.125 boxes)
Blue Autographs (#/50): 1:167 packs (1 in 6.96 boxes)
Purple Autographs (#/25): 1:335 packs (1 in 13.96 boxes)
Red Autographs (#/10): 1:835 packs (1 in 34.8 boxes)
Gold Autographs (#1/1): 1:7998 packs (1 in 333.25 boxes)
Autographed Printing Plate: 1:2115 packs (1 in 88.125 boxes)
Autographed Patch Cards: 1:2726 packs (1 in 113.58 boxes)
Autographed Costume Card: 1:49,176 packs (1 in 2049 boxes)
Dual Autographs: 1:14,051 packs (1 in 585.45 boxes)
Triple Autographs: 1:16,642 packs (1 in 693.42 boxes)
Cut Signature: 1:98,252 packs (1 in 4093.83 boxes)
Going by the 3 cut signature cards x 4093.83 boxes that works out to around 12,281 boxes made. From the stated odds it appears there are only 6 David Tennant autographed costume cards.

People want 20 autos per case, and still want them to hold premium value.....supply and demand just doesn't work that way. And if I know Topps, if there was an auto a box, you would get 3-4 of the same auto that you don't want anyway :)

Not getting Matt Smith will really hurt the set.Hm, I can't see it being that much of a problem. Unlike other TV series, getting the main character to sign is not really a problem since there are so many of them. Most Dr Who fans of both the classic and rebooted era have an actor they think of as 'their Doctor', i.e. the actor in the role when they first started watching, so while there will be some recent(ish) fans who think of Matt Smith when they think of Dr Who (or even Peter Capaldi), there are going to be at least as many more who will see David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston or Sylvester McCoy or Peter Davison or Tom Baker and so on as being essential for the set to be a success. Getting autos from eight of the actors (including the cut signatures for the first three) combined with such a huge number of companions and supporting cast members, it's really hard to find fault with the autograph list.

For the younger generation of Whovians, they are pretty well split between Tennant and Smith, with Smith probably having a slight advantage. Eccleston had such a short run and Capaldi is still very new to the role.
If all the doctors signed the same number of cards, I'd put my money on Smith being the most highly sought after. I don't have an issue with the autograph list as is, but I think a complete absence of Smith is a big loss for the set.

Too bad it wasn't Smith instead of Collin.

That's funny. The 2014 set is just out the door. Bets on when the "2016" set will be released?

Pretty quickly if they can convince everyone to allow them to do a 'what if?' release with minor Star Wars characters envisioned as The Doctor.

Looks like I won't be seeing my 2 cases until Friday =\ That sucks, but at least I'll be home that day to receive them. Plus Friday is the worst day to list stuff on eBay it seems.

Interesting to see some of the giveaway and not so giveaway prices being asked on eBay for pulls from this set. I have to think some sellers may not know the series too well.

What I don't understand is the prices on sealed boxes on Ebay. $78.00 with free shipping is pretty much losing money at factory cost of $67.50.

Could be people opening cases until they get all the big hits then sell any extra boxes they have.
Scouring Ebay, not a while lot up yet, saw a BIN Paul McGann auto patch for $499. REALLY want a Sally Sparrow patch, one of my favorite episodes, plus the patches look really nice.
According to the Brand Manager on Twitter, Barnes and Noble will carry these, I may actually be able to find some.
