View Full Version : Is jimmy Nelson worth investing at these prices?

I mean he's had a taste of the big leagues AND he's due for a call up. He's got a 1.91 ERA and he's 5-1. Prices are really low, saw a blue on here for 12. Should I?

Pitchers for the Brewers and is 24 years old.

I'd stay away from him. When was the last time an older pitcher for the Brewers panned out and received hobby love?

I'd put anywhere between $5000-12500 into him, he is a can't miss sure thing.

Woah these are VERY different first two posts. I don't think it's fair to judge by organization death2redemptions, it should be about the player, true organizations help (cardinals, dodgers) but a bad one DIESNT have that much if an effect IMO I think it's more about the player. LOL really? You don't think the organization they play in makes a difference in how much they sell for? Well then good luck, invest away

And it appears you have already made up your mind so go ahead and buy it for Christ's sake! Did you want our opinion or want us to verify your decision?

Opinion of course! I don't necessary agree with the bad organization part. This is a thread about the player isn't it? If love to hear about the player and I'll take your opinion but organization is bit different of a topic.

Try looking deeper than ERA and......smh......wins. His BB/9 is pretty bad for a pitcher of his age and level. While he does a good job of keeping the ball in the park, it looks like he is doing that by working the lower part of the zone....and missing a lot. The more disciplined hitters in MLB will just take the walks and he won't get far into games. He doesn't profile to be a particularly effective MLB level pitcher.

Hmmm that's a very good point... He has low strike zone stuff with the sinker, I see what you're saying. But then how dies he have the low era with so many walks?

I was under the assumption you were looking to try and profit off his cards. That is what people generally are asking when they ask about a player on here.

If you're asking if we think he has potential to be a good pitcher, then sure I do. I don't think he will be an ace but he has the potential to be a very solid #3-#4 with a ceiling of becoming a #2 pitcher.

You asked if u should invest, then basically said team has no bearing. IMO you should learn the market prior to investing in anyone.

Okay thanks. On the brewers roster I see 2 or 3. If gaillardo leaves, maybe if circumstance allows a #1, but I guess mlb wise he's a 2 or 3. Who knows if he figures out his command, he could be a VERY good pitcher

He has a high strand rate and he doesn't give up a bunch of homers. The high strand rate isn't really sustainable at the MLB level.

Exactly. Teams have a HUGE bearing on the value of players on the market. If you don't know this then you need to do more research before making investments. A players performance doesn't always translate into value.

Check out Chris Sale for instance, if the market was based on production his cards would be worth a ton more. If he played for the Dodgers his cards would be worth a ton more. If he played for the Brewers his cards would actually probably be worth less than they already are now and in no way do I predict Jimmy Nelson to be as good as Chris Sale so as an investment standpoint Jimmy Nelson isn't really a good buy. Especially considering the fact Chris Sale is younger and better than Jimmy Nelson.

So if you want to know Jimmy Nelson's ceiling, take a look at the price of Chris Sale's cards and cut it in half.

If you bought Chris sale early and sold when had a great year you would have made some fat stacks. Anyone who bought his autos and sold when he got got made at least double back.
I personally don't care what team a prospect is on. If you believe on the player and have the rocks to pony up that's the game.

His prices were never high. His base auto never exceeded $60-$75 and his prices actually started pretty high (around $25-$30) so there was never a time to make a good profit from Chris Sale.

Jimmy Nelson is 24 years old which is old for a prospect so trying to invest on him is just an awful idea. The team he plays for makes it even worse.

Doesn't mean he won't be a good player.

let's saw he caps out and has a career similar to Gallardo (and Gallardo is solid)

are Gallardo or marco Estrada stuff selling well?

This guy will need a no hitter or an impressive 5-0 start in the majors before he gets remotely any love. I mean you won't make a killing off I'm but you may make a few bucks. 24 year old pitchers on clubs with small fan bases do not ever intrigue me. I guess if you want to invest 50-100.00 in him the go for it, it's not a lot of money. Don't go all in on him!

If he did they still wouldn't sell well. And Nelson really only has one, the rookie auto won't sell nearly as well if he somehow did blow up in prices.

at a point in the summer of 2011 his autos were very cheap. You are correct when the product released his autos were around 20-25. His autos dropped sometime after that. I have sold dozens of his chromes and sterlings and doubled up on my original layout.

Yes, there was a window when he was in the bullpen when there was a lot of money to be made off of Chris. I bought a 2010 Chrome for $12 or so but I still have that because I have a little stash of Sale hoping he does something like pitch a no no or wins the Cy Young, then maybe I'll unload a little.

You really can't look at it this way with the Brewers. 24 years is not old. BECAUSE they are a small market (and I strongly disagree with the contention of having a small fan base), they tend to let players develop in the minors longer until they have no choice but to bring them up, hence allowing them to control their years of service in the MLB. They have been doing it this way for quite a while (Fielder, Braun - I feel like I waited FOREVER for those guys to get to the majors). Also consider that they have no room in the majors for him. Who would you kick out of their starting 5 to bring him up?

Say what you will about BB/9, but Nelson has been doing fantastic at every level of the minors.

Wasn't able to put together a quality start and allowed quite a few base runners but didn't give up any runs so I'd say his season debut was a success.

I'm not saying he did bad, I think he did a good job. I'm just saying he gave up 5 hits and 3 walks which is little high for 5+ IP but regardless it was a good game. Especially for a rookie.

From his start yesterday it seems to me that Jimmy Nelson and Wily Peralta are very similar. Although they are the same age, Wily has a better, more consistent delivery with more control than Nelson, but Nelson may have a better slider than Peralta which is really saying something.

But take a look at how Wily Peralta cards are moving and that basically tells you to lay of Jimmy Nelson, although I will probably buy some cheap Nelson's in a month or two.

I don't think he'll be a stud at all. I just saw how cheap his cards were and how close he was to call up... Could've been a GOLDEN opportunity to flip. Could've bought a purple 9.5/10 for 150. Would've flipped for 200 now, more later.
