View Full Version : Washington Redskins - Pretty big "name" news

Not trying to start an argument (Countdown in like 5 posts) but this is actually pretty relevant.
"The US Patent and Trademark Office has cancelled six federal trademark registrations for the name Washington Redskins saying the name is "disparaging" and cannot be trademarked under federal law that prohibits the protection of offensive or disparaging language"
I'm not a lawyer, and I don't pretend to be, but this sure seems like pretty big news. I could go out and print shirts that say Washington Redskins shirts today and the team can't sue me (the NFL might on some other level) because the Redskins can't now claim a trademark as the trademark will be deemed invalid. The logo is probably a different issue.
At least according to all the articles I'm seeing. Feel free to correct me.
If what is out there right now is true (and I'm not saying it is 100%) - this is going to slow down the money train - which is going to force Dan Snyder to revisit his "I'll never change it" stance.
Just posting for the information. I'm not participating in any sort of inevitable argument.
U.S. Patent office cancels Redskins trademark registration, says name is disparaging - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/us-patent-office-cancels-redskins-trademark-registration-says-name-is-disparaging/2014/06/18/e7737bb8-f6ee-11e3-8aa9-dad2ec039789_story.html)

I'll get it deleted for you.
Attention NFL fans, You should immediately boycott all Official NFL gear. Don't buy another item until the Redskins have their Trademark reinstated.
This is no longer America, it is a Tyrannical Socialist state run by idiots that just want their way.
These same idiots expect us to believe that the IRS lost 2 years of emails, that our President learns about all of the scandals by watching the news (in other words...we are more informed that he is), that all of our problems are caused by the 1% (when many of the Socialist Democrats selling this lie are the 1%), that a video caused our first Ambassador in over 30 years to be assassinated, that it was worth trading a deserter for 5 mass-murdering terrorist....the list goes on and on.
Make a statement and take our country back.
You're welcome.

Same sh*t different toilet. I know that most won't care about history, hell most people don't even care about freedoms or rights anymore and give them up willingly. This same ruling was delivered in 1999 and it was reversed 4 years later. As Bruce Allen said yesterday, this was expected (Telegraphed by Nancy Pelosi herself) and the team will be okay (and it will). I expect in a few years this will be over turned again. Same sh*t different toilet. Carry on

We would never accept those other racially insensitive names and logos for other ethnicities, but I guess it's perfectly ok as long as they're native Americans.

Because native americans are born in this country every day. As they grow up they begin to notice things that they feel are not right and may offend them. Precisely the reason why the "its always been this way and no one ever cared" argument holds no weight.

I am white and I have no problem with the term "cracker" or "redneck".
I, however, wouldn't recommend you call every white person you see either of those terms. I won't walk around pretending that it is okay to use those terms even though I am not offended by it.
My point being, just because you don't find something offensive doesn't mean that someone else won't go upside your head for it even if you see nothing wrong.
Will this create a slippery slope causing more teams to change names? Maybe... and maybe they should. Changes in thought and culture don't typically happen overnight.
Is the name of a team on the list of things that we should be most worried about as a country? Probably not, but if it is important enough to gain the traction it has, it should at least be discussed rationally.
And history and tradition are not two good arguments for defending it.

If that were remotely true which it isn't of course, why don't teams that aren't profitable doing the same thing? The idea that rebooting a franchise is profitable is wrong, its horrible for a team and takes them many years to recover

I am sick of this politically correct crap. I believe there is more pressing issues to take care of by the government then to change a name of some football team. This is all politics to make the left look like they really care about the minority classes and to get their votes. Just look at Al Gore, he took up the fight for making the country green. Too much polution, too much oil and global heating of the planet. Just do the research, Al Gore was going to make millions if not billions off turning the USA green. I don't trust anyone in government, they are mostly all crooks who profits off hard working americans. Also, take a look at how much we pay our president, congressman, senators after they get out of office, it is crazy. Were paying these guys to mess up our country and thanking them when they get voted out or retire. Something is wrong, something needs to change.
IMHO the name Redskin is not a racial slur to me or my friends. Sidenote, I am part Indian and I am proud to be Indian, my second wife and her children are over 30 percent Indian and they have the same opinion as I.

I agree with you bowefan but the problem runs deeper then that. Forget politics for a minute.
You have a loud minority of internet punks that have nothing better to do then waste there time talking about this. They have nothing better to do and simply like to stir the shyt. When these pukes keep talking about an issue that's backed in race baiting you always see change for "PC sake" never because it was the right thing to do but because they won the popular vote.
The problem runs deep. Some of the worst protesters like the man in charge of the Indian movement to change this name himself are just morally bankrupt and have never learned to think for themselves. This is what I see most of the time when they congregate in a thread like this or another article is written about the 81 year old name that wasn't racist most of everyone's life but suddenly is.
http://www.nothingbychancecoaching.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lemmings-off-a-cliff.jpg
You can't stop the ignorant when they are in mass movement. You just can't. You can blame it on politics, I blame it on a lack of balls personally. It's rare when a business man like Daniel Snyder stands up to a group of race baiting idiots and says NO.
When I see someone do that today I stand behind them because this generation has no balls to do that anymore. Half of the country has turned into a bunch of scared guilt ridden bleeding heart wussies, the other half is afraid to say what they really feel in fear of upsetting that hornet's nest of wussies.
No matter how you slice it, PC correct will never change and will continue to get worse and worse. It won't change until the youth decide that it's OK to say NO again to the next race baiter looking for attention. Until then we just have to deal with it. This is only the beginning. Say goodbye to the things you know and love, when someone can call "racism" either right or wrong it's gone.

Oh I'm sure this issue is on the radar but they are snakes in the grass just waiting for the right time to strike when it benefits them.
This is a very unusual issue for every one of us to witness. It's uncommon for a different minority group outside of African Americans being in the news for a race issue like this. Yet no one wants to talk about that because they are afraid of being labeled a racist.
Today if the African American groups were to get behind the change and the Native American group pushing it then that will empower this American Indian group and they will gain more headlines and power since that it their goal here. Anyone believing this is all about just the Redskins name to be changed is fooling themselves I believe. This is all about that Native American group gaining political power. If they gain more power they will want more and they will go for more. When I mean power I am talking reparations and retribution for the wrong doings that were done to their people. The Redskins 81 year old name will be a very powerful feather in their caps.
If Sharpton and the like say nothing now and stay out of this for the time being until the end of the fight when victory is certain which I fully and 100% think they will do, they can align themselves with these groups and claim victory for themselves. That's all they are waiting for. It's only a matter of time in this game of chess until they get involved I'm certain. And they will. They will want to be on the side of victory. Government should worry about more important issues in this country like the homeless, starving people, unemployment, crime rate in big cities, foriegn policy blunders, and gas prices. And not get so involved in sports related issues like name changes and steroid use. It's a sad day. And for the people saying that it's progress, no it's not. The government spending money and time on this type of issue is time and money taken away from the above important issues. That's why this country will continue to go downhill and continue being the laughing stock of the world.

Unfortunately to me I think you are right about this, but what's worse to me is the people championing for this to change. Is this the most important issue you want the government involved in?
Don't those people understand that when these Senators get involved in something like this and spend time on it that it only takes away from not doing more important things like securing the borders, not allowing worse terrorists then the Taliban to own the 5th largest oil supply in Iraq and ignoring our soaring gas price crisis, and other issues?

So Tommy, if you want all of US to ask Native Americans if the term Redskin offends them, why don't you do the same and find out whether we are right, or you? You'll probably find that most are not offended by it, like the students/teachers/parents of student who attend, a little school in Arizona called Red Mesa High School. While I think a lot of what he said is over the top. I'm on the fence myself as to what I believe the actual motives and objectives of this are. I guess the question is, does it really matter? Can you ignore American citizens when they say a name of a sports team offends them to their core? I believe I stated that not everyone gets offended by offensive language. However, if you truely feel that a term is not offensive, feel free to refer to that group with said term whenever you see them.
I won't call any NA "redskin" because the term is offensive and I know better. But those defending not changing the name obviously feel differently and should have no problem at all.
I don't care if one group uses the term freely. That still doesn't make it okay.

Well you do have to take into considerstation everything on a case by case basis. The name of a football team and the traditions etc that go along with it, do not outweigh a group of citizens feeling aliented when they see it. I agree with your post that this is the way our country seems to be headed. I've said it before on these boards and ill say it again, you dont fix the wrongs of the past by doing them again in reverse. The issue should always be the first thing considered, not the race, economic status, religeous views, sexual preference or what have you of the people involved. Some American Citizens are saying the name of a football team is offensive, and that is how the issue should be viewed imo.
