View Full Version : Why Is Masahiro Tanaka's Demand/sales down??

I'm curious on your thoughts.....

Personally, I'm not a Tanaka fan, nor am I Yankees fan but, the guy is BALLING !!!

Tanaka is 11-1, he's got a killer SO to W ratio, ERA, etc.

So why are his cards stagnant at best, most of which are down!?!?

He had one burst in prices when the Yankees 'won' him, but now nothing!

Except for his autos (International cards) and some jersey cards and/or colored chrome, his stuff is dead!

People say he's 'old' , he's already played um-teen years in Japan, well so did Ichiro, and so did Abreu (Cuba) and their stuff is (and still is) on fire!!!

Tanaka has proved that he can win, and w/ great dominance....so why is he down?

You just listed all the cards people want. You are asking why his base cards have gone down in value? Simple- supply and demand.

My LCS has no problem getting $12 for Bowman RC's

no one wants base cards... look at anyone else. this thread is dumb because when/if Tanaka gets a certified topps auto, it will be worth two abreu combined probably

No auto? ........

I figure I'd get some goofy replies. My point is that Abreu's stuff sells , EVEN his base cards....

My initial point was just that his overall demand is down. I just did a TRI-STAR show, and I had ZERO people ask for ANY of his stuff, and his Chrome stuff isnt really moving that well-- definitely not at the rate of Abreu, who's on the White Sox.

He's a pitcher.......see Strasburg...Prior...or Nomo for that matter....although I still like Nomo.

"...he's a Yankee"

Ok, and what? Although I'm NOT a yankees fan, their stuff sells quite well.

If he keeps going at the pace he's on, everything will start going up, even the crappy base.

I think its the combination of the fact that hes a SP and no Auto..the other 2 big names, Bryant and Abreu, are selling well. I agree with alot of the posters that SP's seem to not catch on as quickly value wise as hitters

The hype at the start of the season is dying down. Same as Abreu. Also, he has no auto. Most of the people already got the base cards they want.

Dude is already one of the top-5 pitchers in the game, will win ROY and possibly the Cy Young Award in his first ML season... and this thread? lol Just wait until his popularity catches up to his talent. There are still people who are on the fence. When they come around... watch out. His certified Japanese autos will explode, seeing that he has no American autos. Think Ichiro, but a pitcher. Ichiro only had a few rookie autos and they still sell for insane amounts of money. Tanaka literally only has 3 known autos from his true Japanese rookie season of 2007. One out of 200, one out of 70 and one out of 20, all on-card autos. Imagine the potential for those.

Next step for him is to have Kershaw-like superiority for more than a single season, i.e. not go the Dice-K route. One Cy Young would be good, multiple would be much better.

Personally I think its because all the people who wanted to spend the big bucks on this guy already have. At this point you are only selling to the crowd with significantly less $$ to spend.

Because all his cards are different colored base cards with a different serial number. Relics are worthless and without the auto on a topps card, it's really just a base card. Maybe if he starts signing, the prices will go up

If he keeps going at this pace it is possible he could win ROY, Cy Young and MVP

sportcardtheory--that is MY point exactly. The guy is cy-young material but at the last 3 or 4 card shows I've set-up at, NO ONE has even asked if I have ANY of his stuff....just a little surprised myself!

Pitcher is my guess also. They might throw heat but they sure can't blast the ball across the wall.

Cards are driven by potential, plain and simple. The less room a guy has to improve, the less value there is left for his cards to improve.

Tanaka already had insane hype, so anything he does is expected. There's not much new he can do that would suddenly draw added attention or hype to him. Therefore most collectors don't see much meat left on the bone to make a profit and his values slow down. Happens to all players at some point.

This is why a Kris Bryant card can sell for more than an Albert Pujols card. The moon is the limit for an unproven talent like Bryant while a Pujols is done developing. He is what he is and there's very little he can do to change that, similar to Tanaka.

Wait til autos come out

There won't be any. He's refusing to sign for card companies. All there are is certified Japanese autos from years past.

Not this year anyway. If he does in the future, they won't be rookie autos.

He does refuse to sign now. But he is just focused on this season. He might start signing stuff in the offseason. Who knows, but there wont be any autos for this season that is for sure

I don't have any problem collecting his other stuff for now. plenty of cards to collect now. when his autos comes they will come

I just like collect these cards now :)

He doesn't have a good, exciting card out right now. Topps needs to find a way to cause excitement without an auto.
