A few reasons could come up. Cornering the market. Good investment, price was right, hoarding, and the need to have more to complete a patch/logo. Anything else is just a derivative or combination of the reasons listed

Mine is a hoarding thing. My buddy Adam (ac-n-mike) was doing the same thing with Aaron Brooks Exquisite RPA a few years ago and ended up with like 60+. He also did the 2005-06 SPx Winning Materials Marvin Williams and got in Beckett because of how insane that collection got. I got the idea from him. I've currently got 20% of the print run of the Orlando Johnson Silhouette autos, and I typically pay anywhere between $3-$10 for them. Haven't spent more the $10 on one in over a year (and won't anymore considering he's not even in the league). Just turned into a small manageable obsession for me once I had gotten a few of them, which is weird because I usually avoid duplicates like the plague.

Thanks Steve, that's interesting to read about your Orlando Johnson Silhouettes. If he's out of the league, presumably the cards have lost a lot of value (although I appreciate you didn't spend much on them anyway). I don't know how many of them you own, but let's say you've got 20 x $10 each = $200 invested in them. What do you intend to do with them? Keep them forever? Wouldn't it be more fun to have just 1 of them and use the other $180 for different cards?

I'm in no way criticising. We all collect in different ways. It's just that hoarding isn't a mindset I can get into. If it was for investment purposes I suppose I could understand it. Otherwise it just seems obsessive/OCD.

Interesting answers once again, and I can see some of the logic there.

There have been times when I have bought a card for, say, $300, and then seen the same card sell for $200 a few months later... and I have been tempted to outbid people for it. But I don't need two. I'd rather use the money for other cards.

It's really interesting seeing how people collect cards in completely different ways.

I've got exactly 20 of them and I'd say on average I've paid probably $8 per. The purpose in buying them was never an investment (none of my collection ever has been), but done out of fun. To me, it's fun to see how far I can go with it. They'll most likely never be worth more than $3-5 a piece realistically, which is fine with me. It is an OCD type thing for sure, but to an extent. I've never spent more than $12 on any of them and refuse to. I've seen a few listed even just slightly above that for $15-20 BIN and I don't feel the obsessive need to have them. It's just a fun little project, nothing more nothing less. As far as spending the money on other cards, sure I could but I'm not a high-end buyer so I'd just end up with a bunch of other random low value cards that wouldn't have nearly the same appeal to me.

That's fair enough, I can understand that. I actually think nearly all card collectors have some mild form of OCD / addictive streak in them. Also, on an unrelated note, why are 99.9% of collectors male rather than female? I genuinely don't know the answer to that.

Anyway, regarding your cards, I can see the appeal of buying the same card if you really like it and if you think the price is good.
