Batman Recommendations

Looking to jump into a Batman series. Can anyone recommend one I can pick up and go with, without having to be filled in too much on story arc. Thanks, and sorry if my novice standing as a comic fan shows :)

Batman Eternal is a good one but it's also 18 issues in and weekly. Batman #34 is the start of a new storyline so you can jump in immediately. Batman #21-33 is Zero Year.

1. The Killing Joke (when Alan Moore transformed brand-name comic characters into sickos)
2. Hush (the second best crossover event in comic history behind only The Infinity Gauntlet)
3. Batman New 52 (Snyder and Capullo are probably the best writer and best full story artist in the industry right now; The Court of Owls will definitely fit well into a movie one day)
4. Batman versus Predator (yes, this is a real thing)

Some very good recommendations above. I'll second Snyder & Capullos current run on Batman, and if you like it, it's well worth picking up the trades from the beginning (The Court of Owls).

If you're looking for some classic Batman stories, you can't go wrong with The Long Halloween, Year One and The Dark Knight Returns.

Hush is by far the best IMHO, and don't overlook The Black Mirror (Detective Comics The Black Mirror #871-877) Scott Snyders first work on Batman.

Batman The New 52 - Have been loving this series since the day it came out, can't go wrong!
Batman Eternal - You would need to find the previous issues but it's intwined with the new Batman arc that is being released this month. Would be a good time to pick it up!
Batman: Hush - One of the best crossovers I have read so far (+Jim Lee's artwork is just stunning)
The Killing Joke - Needed to read it a couple of times in order to understand all the symbolism behind it, but there is no better book out there that describes the twisted relationship between Batman and the Joker like this one. Definite must read!
Flashpoint: Batman-Knight of Vengeance - A very short story but so cleverly done. Can't tell you too much without spoiling the rest but it takes place in an alternative world where Thomas Wayne survived the shooting and takes on the role of Batman. It comes in the Deluxe Edition of 'Batman Noir: Eduardo Risso' (which, by the way, is a good read as well) if you can't find the single issues.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned "Under The Red Hood". It goes with the "Death in the Family" story. But I'm gonna go a different route and tell you to watch the cartoon Batman: Under The Red Hood. It was AWESOME. Trying to get all the issues of the great recommendations left above is tedious work especially if there are not all available to you at the same time. Or you can go the trade paperback route to save time and cash. I myself am putting together the Hush story arc after reading the TPB. Trying to find great copies and keeping the price splurge down is proving to be a challenge but fun. Good luck with whatever you choose.

"The devil's advocate". In my mind the best Batman/Joker story to date (yes, even above the killing joke). It was a single one-shot so in that regard little to track down but last time I looked original prints were getting expensive as more people started reading it.

I am trying to read and get all the Death of the Family cross-over, Batman is a real interesting character and Batman/Robin/Nightwing are my focus (I also just started getting into comics)

I am reading hush and death in the family, and I am enjoying them..some people here recommended them after my displeasure with marvel and others lately.

I think overall Death of the family was my favorite story. long halloween was good, and hush was awesome, but i felt like they were expected. I read death of a family not believing what i was reading

I just saw Batman: Assault on Arkham. By far the most entertaining cartoon yet. A must see. Joker and Harley at their best.

I had to pick up the complete Batman Animated Series on DVD for this reason. One of the finest cartoons ever made!

I'm sure you can pick em up fairly cheap. As with most my movies, it gets opened, ripped to my media centre then boxed away for all eternity :)
