From what I read he was drinking beer at his house on vacation. I think we'd all be in trouble at work if that was considered substance abuse.

"Prater's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, says that Prater was suspended for drinking a few beers at home."

That's the statement from his attorney; soooooooooooooooooooooo I think there's a little more to the story than that.
Doesn't make much sense that the NFL initially handed Prater a full year suspension for having a few beers at his house while on vacation; even with a DUI from three years ago. Sounds more to me like the attorney is trying to spin this as "no big deal" because he knows the NFL will not explicitly say what the suspension was for.

He got a dui 3 years ago and I guess part of his deal with the nfl was that he wouldn't drink....or something to that affect. I haven't found the specific details.
Drinking beers at home on vacation = 4 game suspension
Knocking your wife out at a casino = 2 game suspension

Comon guy. Don't buy into the "drinking beers at home" garbage. You think his wife called the NFL while they were at home ...
It's a ridiculous story which makes zero sense; but effective because a lot of people are having the same reaction you are to draw sympathy to Prater.

lol I know. How about...
16 games for smoking weed
4 games for taking a fertility drug
4 games for drinking a beer at home
2 games for knocking out your wife

While I agree Ray Rice got off way to easy, your comparisons are absolutely wrong:
16 games for getting caught smoking weed multiple times and skipping a mandatory drug test
4 games for taking a performance enhancing drug
4 games for drinking alcohol when your employer says you should not drink ANY alcohol
2 games for knocking out your then girlfriend and now wife.
2 of the 4 examples you report are multiple violations. 1 was a player claiming to take a banned substance for fertility reasons under the auspices of, "my dr said it wasn't banned..." When he could have asked the team, team physician, or NFL at anytime. The last one was a complete screw up on disciplinary action.

The Colts punter got drunk and jumped into a river and now gets tested all the time and hs to go to lots of meetings while 'in the program', he talks(and jokes) about it all the time on diff. social media. Hey without Prater kicking, in week one the Colts will only lose to Denver 49-31.

Drunken idiot kickers seem to haunt Peyton Manning.

If players would learn to just follow the rules they agreed to when they signed their contracts and even more appropriately think before every action, "Is this a good idea, and what are the possible outcomes". They would be much better off.

I was going to post this in the Simpsons Marathon thread but it'll fit here too.

All of this amazes me....considering Janikowski smokes and drinks WHILE he plays! Doesn't he sit on a keg on the sidelines?
