View Full Version : Enormously Annoying NYCC Exclusives

OK, I'm still getting caught up with Enormous(#2 just arrived in the mail), and I'm still on the fence about it, but this is kind of annoying...
Enormous Exclusives For NYCC 2014 - Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movie, TV News (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/10/08/enormous-exclusives-for-nycc-2014/)
I mean, it just kind of sucks for people who bought the expensive variants for #1(Phantom WAS the rarest at 544 copies), but now they show up at NYCC with a limited to 100 exclusive cover reprint of #1. Now, I know it's a "2nd printing", but I think people don't discriminate as much as they used to, especially when it's an exclusive item like this.
Also, before #4 even hits stores, they unveil 2 limited to 250 variants for it.
At a certain point you're just printing money, and taking advantage of a speculator market(I know I'm sounding hypocritical here...) I hope they are limiting 1 copy per customer of the #1 reprint/variant, because otherwise like 5 guys will scoop them all up.
I just think there's enough demand for a healthy 2nd printing of #1, and then more people could read their comic, but I think they're more interested in keeping their book out of people's hands to feed that "hot rare item" buzz. :coffee:

Right now the variant cover market is huge. It's being used to manipulate the buying habits of both the average consumer and comic shops themselves. Speculators are jumping on these things as immediate online flips and completely screwing with the market. Some people are making money on this but for the most part I just see it as a losing proposition for collectors in the long run.
My suggestion would be, don't worry about them. If you get them fine, if not fine, don't sell a kidney just to get some limited to 10 copies signed by god with scetch cover by leonardo davinci book. Eventually people will tire of this and the prices will fall off and you can pick them up then. Patience is a virtue when it comes to collecting and you never want to be collecting the hot commodity when it's hot.

Signed by God and a sketch cover by Da Vinci?!?!?!?! Now THAT would be Enormous :)
As a modern collector, I can definitely see why people stay in the GA, SA and BA books. However, it is fun to chase these hard to get covers. I do the same thing with Bowman Chrome in baseball. It's the chase that makes it interesting

Diamond lost the shipment fellas. Tim has posted with the regular book in hand weeks ago at the warehouse yet Diamond fubar this up big time. If you are going to get mad get mad at the right entity not the creative team working hard and actually having the book done on time.

Tim has been saying all along that Diamond has been screwing them over with the shipments. Definitely do not blame Tim or Mehdi!!! Their product is top notch. Diamond? Not so much

I think that's a separate issue. Even if Diamond was on top of things, they'd still be making these variants.
I just think that there's a line at some point. It would make sense to have a NYCC variant of the latest issue, but why not just do one special variant that's limited to 500, instead of the 2 at 250 each!? It's double dipping into your fan's wallet. Imagine, a completest on this book will have 4 different versions(at least) just of issue #4!
Their book is good enough to sell through a single variant to more people, and it would get the book in more new reader's hands, IMHO.
For example, Wytches #1 has many variants, but as a collector, you can prepare in advance, and decide what to invest your money into. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. printings of #1 to meet demand of new readers are to be expected, later on, but I'm not a big fan of a "special edition" coming out months after the original release, that's the most limited edition(and a 100 print run is insane...imagine if Enormous becomes hugely popular like Walking Dead...not saying that will happen, but just imagine what a 100 print book would be worth, and how much more than any of the other original 1st prints!)
I think these kinds of practices is getting dangerously too close to what happened to the sports cards market, and shows a lack of integrity. :coffee:

It could be that they went with 2 of the 250 variants because for the first 6 issues they have been doing a cover a & b maybe. Just a thought I had.

Convention specials never bothered me. Five Ghosts has some stuff where the print run is 50. East of West #1 had the 43,000 regular print run and on the same date had 5000 of the Ghost variant and then 1000 copies of the Forbidden Planet. Then, 3 months later, they came out with the RRP numbered to around 300 or maybe exactly 300. There are 25,000+ people reading EoW each month and the RRP is a nice bonus for the diehards.
I can understand the frustration. To me the card market is more reflected in the DC and Marvel 1:10 -1:300 gimmick. In order to get one of those books, you have to buy a bunch. Thats what hurt the card market imo.
Edit: I think at least 2 of the Enormous NYCC covers are 2 for $5. That isn't exactly sticking it to us imo.

Oh, I understand that part, but that doesn't obligate them to do 2 variants on top of the regular double dipping haha!
At the end of the day, I'm not losing sleep over this. I don't have a personal grudge with the creators.
It's just that it would probably be easier for me, if I read issue #2, and decide I'm not that into it, just to avoid all of this. The Retailer exclusive of East of West that came out months later also sucks. Of course, if you are one of the lucky ones, it doesn't, but if you're a hardcore fan it's natural to want one.
I'm just suggesting that there's a real effect on collectors, and their wallets. I know many people don't give a crap, and think it's all silly(that's probably the way to go...), and those that make a profit off of these practices love it, but for the average collector/fan it can take the wind out of the sails of collecting moderns.
Again, I say this with all due respect to the creators of Enormous. I just think it would nice to see some restraint shown sometime. If you can buy both NYCC variants for 5 bucks that's a steal, because wasn't someone already selling them for 100..?? AHHHHHHH....see...? I got sucked in, again. Nevermind...

BTW- I did some soul-searching on this(yes, my life is that sad ATM...) AND I realize that a lot of my reaction is due to sour grapes for living on the other side of the country!
I'm sure I'd be taking advantage of some of these exclusives if I lived in the are, like I do at SDCC, Wondercon, etc. ;)

Well the team is selling them 2 for 5 bucks so what other situation do you see where a new exclusive book at NYCC selling for less than cover. I'm surprised its not marked up 15 bucks each at the booth. Who knows but I do think this book is going to blow up very soon.

I'm with you. It would be nice to be able to go. Unfortunately these stupid things called work and bills combine to keep me home almost all of the time. :D
