This thread is to post about modern books you notice an uptic in sales on.

I'll start thing off, Edge of Spider-Verse #2 was hot last week, now it's ON FIRE. Seems as if sales have doubled in the last week. Base issues were going for $9.99 last week, now hitting $20+, and the variant is going between $50-$100

You might want to subscribe to this thread as I'll post to it from now on instead of creating new threads for each new hot book, I'll just add to this one. It'll also help us condense all the hot modern news into one area.

I don't know, it wasn't that short printed and it isn't like on ongoing series will lead to a tv or movie deal. I think it will eventually cool off, especially if the ongoing sucks.

I think the Miracle Man 12 Hughes variant may not get hot but its freakin hard to find. If you can find it I would hold it and see if it doesn't go way up just due to scarcity.

It's hard to say how major of an impact she'll have in the universe over time, or if Silk will prove to be a more major player. The entire Spidey-universe is going to get really wacky real soon with quite an assortment of Spider-men that'll be running around.

I am calling a Ted Kord, Blue Beetle appearance in Arrow or Flash soon. I think the FA for BB is too obscure as it was from a different publisher in Charlton, it's Captain Atom 83. It sells decently already.

Ted's first DC appearance is Crisis on Infinite Earths 1 which is already a pretty cool comic on its own, combine it with the first DC appearance of Blue Beetle and I think it will go way up once he makes his tv appearance

Just an observation, it look like the females of our species identify with Gwen Stacy more than Silk. In the stores I visited they always asked for Gwen Stacy issue and not spider-verse 2. I could be wrong. Then they ask for the female Thor issue too.

I'm not worried Silk will be a slow climber as she is a "new" character. Gwen Stacy is a benchmark fellas that is probably the #1 reason why one is rising faster over the other.

The Amazing #4 has a ton of options which makes it tough maybe for collectors to narrow 1 book as the clear "one to get" IMO they are all outstanding and worth getting.

Carrie Kelley is a big deal in the Batman mythos and Batman Red Robin #19 is her first New 52 appearance and I believe her first in continuity showing. I'd grab a couple and see what happens as they're relatively inexpensive.

While I normally don't get too excited about the longterm prospects of a variant cover, the Venom/Mary Jane variant from a few years back is evidence that Spiderman variants with new takes on established female characters can reach and sustain insane prices. With news of an ongoing Spidergwen series (and the potential that she could be introduced into the main Earth-616 universe and/or the MCU), I think this book will stay strong for quite some time.

Its this is not heating up yet.. But, Walking Dead 131 is the 1st appearance of Dante (http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Dante). If he lives through this new story arc, I can see him becoming a major character.

If you got a hold of a few copies, sell all but 1 or two then hold for long term speculation. Personally, I liked the story, thus my copy will remain in my collection.

Well, I don't know if this is a good pick, or not, but I went to 2 stores, today, and neither had this(and 1 of those stores carries just about everything!).

Since they're out of stock on issue three and four im gonna guess hard. On new releases, I don't pay more than cover. For variants I usually find them under the ratio suggested they pay for them. The hasting variants are not desirable to me, I'm not even sure how they interlock. Midtown's actually form a larger pick and they're still in stock there. Reg cover too. Mycomicshop has the reg covers too.
I will not be ordering from either. LCS are are out or marked up. If you don't need them to complete your set I wouldn't stock up to flip. People were buying them like it was coffee. I'm sure the print run wasn't small. Just my opinion.

I got those two also. The Afterlife one is the one i wanted the most, for my collection. It looked pretty good in grayscale instead of color. The Sabrina preview looked really good in grays, reminded me of old horror magazines.

I'm not sure it's been mentioned yet, but Captain Marvel (2012) #1 looks to be heating up based on its most recent sales. This is probably limited to only the regular cover, I don't think the Spider-Man variant will go up much. It's similar to what happened to Hawkeye #1, IMO.

I would grab the 2nd print sketch variant. Print run was pretty low. This could be the one. And I cannot find one anywhere.

Historically, has there ever been an instance where the 2nd and 3rd print is as valuable as the first print?
Yeah. It doesn't happen with every book, but as Indy pointed out with the Hulk 377 third print, they can command quite a bit compared to the first print. You see it more often with Copper Age books where the initial print runs were huge compared to today's standards. It's really a crap-shoot. Amazing Spider-Man #361 second print sometimes sells for more than the first print, but New Mutants #87 second print doesn't move at all.

I asked about a couple modern/slightly older issues that have been heating up, they proceeded to chuckle and say those were all pulled and either marked up already OR sold for higher prices online. I said fair enough, totally understood, its a business. One of the shop staff said it was their job to be on blogs/sites all day picking up on these trends from TV/Movies/other hot topics and then to go pull those books and either mark them up or list online.

I do both, depends on the book really and what may happen in the future. Good holds right now are Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth #1, Rat Queens, 5 Ghosts, but then there are moderns with uncertain futures in other mediums, but are solid reads like East of West, Lazarus, Velvet.. All three of those books are great reads, have no immediate tv shows/cartoons/movies to speak of, but they're too good to just sell off IMHO. Who knows, maybe something will happen with them in the future, you just never know..

If I go out on a limb and buy a book by Dynamite or IDW, I typically sell those because they rarely go anywhere in terms of long term value or immediate resale value. I try to stick with Image, DC and then Marvel in that order.

After years of collecting, you have to be very selective. I have found that i enjoy the older stuff much more. Most are scarcer print runs, better artists/covers/stories, more keys, and less inventory. I stress this because the inventory factor is rarely taken into account---they pile up very fast! You typically end up with long boxes of stuff that you just pack away. If you want to do that or if you have the space, go for it. Collecting is fun! I am a fan.....

Making money shouldn't be a bad thing. You never know, holding out for the last dollar can burn you more than help especially on books that don't have a history of selling.

They've been limiting new books to 4 or 6 lately. There was a time when you could buy 10 or more. I think they realized what was going on and wanted to keep some stock available for others/increase the price later. They are usually pretty fast about recognizing secondary market trends and pricing accordingly.

Short term if you are buying in bulk now you have missed the boat or at least you will have to hold that boat for a long time to make your money back. Maybe till after the SS movie at least. Her print runs are now huge.

Try looking for issues off the beat and path that many still don't have. Batman Strikes, World Finest Adventures and some very Batman/Detective issues.

The Catwoman issues especially with Harley not on the cover are still under the radar currently.

Another book that's doing really well is Ms. Marvel from 2014 (http://marvel.com/comics/issue/49089/ms_marvel_2014_1). #1 1st prints have gone as high at $50 raw in NM. Graded, $100+ and it keeps going up. It recently got listed on multiple "Best of" 2014 lists, so I expect the trend to continue upwards.

Regarding Enormous: Someone that is very close to the book (Tim Daniels?) on the CGC Forum who is always providing updates and info on the book. One of the tidbits that was passed on was to hold on to issues because "news" will be coming. The art is phenomenal and the writing is good too.

It's PURE, UNADULTERATED speculation so there is no room for readers and collectors here. The dastardly speculator is in the house for this book. Lol, just kidding

I completely agree with you. It's totally flying under the radar right now, but I think it's a slow burner with huge appeal and if enough people start getting on board, you'll see demand for back issues fire up big time.

It'll be interesting to watch these numbers. Those are not anemic, nor are they huge.. So DC is pumping money into it early, and if we see those numbers going up, we'll know we may have a hit on our hands and issue #1 and #2 will double/triple/quad in value very fast.

I saw get a copy of #1 and #2, read it, judge for yourself if it has potential to entertain and thrill. I initially passed on it, but reviews for it are GLOWING (http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/02/gotham-academy-1-review), big time. I might have to read it myself.

There is also a nice variant to #1 if you can find it.

Introducing more female characters such as Spider-Gwen & Silk brings in more female fans.. I think i actually remember reading an article on that.. how Marvel is expanding to a newer generation of female fans. And then there's the sex appeal that attracts the guys. I'm thinking this is only the beginning and it will continue to grow in both popularity and investment. And of course the already success of Harley from DC.

I notice that the majority of my Spider-Gwen books I sell on EBay (SVTU #2 and SHIELD #1 covers) are being bought by females.

They're being brought out more into the storyline and things have gotten really interesting since Lydia was introduced and captured. The entire fight with Carl, the plot(s) being worked on to assassinate a couple people, etc.... the book has gotten really intriguing lately and it's been an unexpected, awesome turn of events for the series.

No it isn't. Her first appearance in regular DC continuity is in the Harley Quinn graphic novel with the Ross cover. There is also artwork of the non-animated universe Harley Quinn in Batman Chronicles Gallery #1. Batman 570 is the first appearance of the character in a regular monthly title that occurs in regular continuity, which is a mouthful. If one is going to find merit in something so specific then I would rather have the second half of that story, which occurs in Detective Comics 737 and actually features Harley on the cover.

How will #642 play out? Not sure yet, but the market has responded to it and the distributor is completely sold out now. Not many on Ebay either, a few left at a dollar over face value, but those are drying up quickly.
