View Full Version : Who's your favorite prospect no one seems to be talking about

For me it's pitcher tyler anderson. Won texas league pitcher of the year and his team almost won his leagues championship.
Era under 2.00, i just don't get why people aren't expecting much from him?

I wouldn't expect too many responses, most of the prospectors here don't like talking about guys they think are undervalued for fear of market movements or competition unfortunately
For me though, its still Matt Wisler, even though he has been a top prospect, I don't think he get enough love for the type of pitcher he could be at the MLB level

He was a 24 year old in AA, not exactly young for the level. I like his ability to keep the HRs off the board....but the level at which he did so last season isn't sustainable...so that ERA is a bit flattering. In over 70 innings at High A he had a more reasonable HR rate and his ERA was 3.25. Seems like he had some luck and he was old for the level....that's probably why no one is talking about him.
Here is Fangraphs write up on him, they rate him as the #7 prospect in the Rockies system.
Tyler Anderson, LHP
Current Level/Age: AA/24.6, 6’4/215, L/L
Drafted: 20th overall (1st round) in 2011 out of Oregon by COL for $1.4 million bonus
Fastball: 50/50+, Slider: 45/45+, Curveball: 40/45, Changeup: 55/60, Command: 45/50+
Scouting Report: The big lefty makes you pause due to the funky delivery, but it creates deception and he’s a good enough athlete to make it work for him command-wise. The stuff is at least as good as in college if not a little better: Anderson hit 95 mph earlier this month, but sits 89-92 mostly. His changeup is a weapon to get swings and misses but the question is on the breaking ball. He tinkers with a slider, curveball and cutter at times, but should be able to settle with at least one fringy/useable pitch to keep hitters off his best two pitches.
Summation: It’s a relatively low-risk #4 starter that could have a long big league career and it could start as soon as late 2015.
FV/Role/Risk: 50, #4 Starter, Low (2 on a 1-5 scale)
Projected Path: 2014: AA, 2015: AAA, 2016: MLB

I like Wisler too. He lost a ton of hype when he struggled with a 5+ ERA in AAA-ball but the dude is only 21 and in Triple-A already. And even still he was 9-5 in Triple-A, I know people hate wins on this forum but the guy is good.
My other would be Jose Peraza. Not much of a power guy and they moved him from SS to 2B (because no-one fields better than A Simmons) but he's the Braves future lead-off hitter who could threaten to lead the NL in stolen bases.
Alen Hanson has also fallen off the radar now but he's still a very solid prospect, although definitely not top tier anymore.

Miguel Sano I. Know he was rated high but I think he has left a lot of people's mind having been injured from the start of the season.
Jake Johansen. I know, not much hype at all, and most people probably dont even know his name. Might wind up being just a power bullpen arm. But the guy is as nice as they come, and super cool to talk to.

He is very injury prone. Not sure if he'll make it long in the big leagues. He has a lot of power if he can stay healthy.
reminds me of a young Cueto or Votto. Really long term investment.

That was part of the Rank the Prospects series, so it was written within the last 2 months...but I don't know when the last time he was personally scouted by someone on Fangraphs staff. Kiley uses scouting reports from all over, though, so I imagine the info is pretty fresh.

Jose Peraza! I believe he is on most Top 100 lists but there isn't much talk about him. I imagine he'll be called up next season and he will be the Braves future second baseman...finally a good player at 2B for the Braves, it has been awhile since we've had a good one. This year's better stats:
469 ab .339 avg .364 OBP .806 OPS 60 SB 79 Runs
He only had a couple home runs but the Braves don't need another swing for the fences and strikeout kind of guy. We need someone who hits for a high average and can steal some bases. He is also supposed to be great defensively which breaks the Braves trend of awful defense at second base.

He finished the year strong and has a great strikeout ratio with an arsenal of pitches .

Tony Kemp. Although he's position blocked by one of the few good Astros. But he has a really strong across the board skillset.
I also like Urshela--been seeing him play the past couple years. Peraza is good. high avg, but little power and not a lot of walks (17), so he'll be prone to BABIP waves. Plus, as the defense and pitching get better in AAA and MLB, it'll be harder for him to keep up the numbers. He is very fast, though. If he can keep his AVG around 300, he'll be a real strong MIF with Andrelton.
I agree with the poster on the Johannsen good dude point. Not sure he'll be able to reliably locate the strike zone.
Others that folks don't talk about...Correlle Prime, Wilmer Difo, Wilfredo Rodriguez, Derek Fisher, Sean Coyle---Man, it is fun to watch Sean Coyle play baseball. Oh, and Alex Claudio. His changeup is one of the best pitches I have ever seen.

That is expecting too much. I think he deserves more credit, but his plate discipline is not close to either of them. I think he'll be an above average defender, with a .280/.310/.400 line. That would make him a good catcher maybe even an occasional all star.

Hello prospectors, I have just a few brief questions. I'm not going to start prospecting, I just have a question on the Draft and what follows it. After the Amateur Draft in June, players go to a short Instructional League season, I believe? And I think that is basically the Grapefruit League in Florida? Is there a similar short season League in Arizona? Is this what is considered "Low A" ?
Do any players go from these Instructional Leagues on to the Arizona Fall League, or is that more for AA / AAA players who might be ready to actually compete for an MLB job at the following Spring Training?
Just curious on the mechanics of the whole system I guess, I always read about Draft results but then don't hear about the draftees until a year or three later. I would think the time to start watching prospects would be as they start to shine in the Instructional League but before they have any cards at all? Unless they have Team USA cards of some sort maybe. ?
