View Full Version : I feel like my LCS cheated my girlfriend and would like opinions

Heres the story:
Girlfriend goes to LCS that I frequent to get Christmas wax. She doesn't know anything about cards, but she did see bowman sterling last time we were there and wanted to get me a pack for Xmas ($50) just to see. So last weekend while Xmas shopping she runs to the LCS and asks for "The $50 pack of Bowman Sterling", which the owner obliges and gives to her. The problem is he sold her 2013 for $50, when he has boxes going for $135. He keeps all his packs that sell for $15 or more behind the counter, so he walked to that spot in the store and knowingly grabbed that box and she just reached in and grabbed a pack.
I'm just curious on a scale of 1-10 how mad should I be? I think I'm more upset that he "upsold" her on the pack rather than knowingly give her the 2013. This guy knows me by name as I spend PLENTY of money there a month. I feel like if he knew that was my girlfriend he wouldn't have done that, but she rarely goes in there and if so its always with me.
Kind of wondering what I should do? Shop is owned by 2 guys (1 I like and the other who I've never really cared for) and of course it wasn't my favorite of the two who sold it to her.
Sorry for the rant I'm just pretty irate as I feel this owner totally duped her.

take it as a loss and just be happy she "tried":)!

go to the store, tell them how angry you are, never spend a dime there again.

Forgot to add. I didn't even look at the pack as I was swallowed in presents and just passed it to her as she loves to open them. Didn't even realize it was 2013 until I saw Cobi Hamilton as the 1st card.

Doesn't sound like they do good business.

I would take the receipt into the store with the pack and ask them if there was a mistake and if not why they did it when they obviously sell them for 15.00 per pack and not 50.00. (If she kept the receipt)

She didn't keep the receipt BUT the pack has the price tag on it as she said he opened a new box and priced them right in front of her.

I would be upset but I think you would get further going and explaining your situation to the gentlemen you like, and possibly bring your girlfriend..
Do they have a security camera? Just so maybe they have the day your GF came in..
Doing that intentionally especially during xmas is a scum bag move..

I wouldn't even bother being nice about it, I'd go in there, hopefully when there are other customers, and I'd put the guy who did it on blast. I'd let lose a tirade of profanities and expletives that would make a Marine blush.
That is beyond bad, especially him opening a new box and pricing it in front of her, that's just terrible as he KNEW for $50, she wasn't asking for 2013.
I would then turn to the owner and say, "I'm sorry, but as long as you employ scumbags like that, I will not spend another cent in this store" and walk out.

Instead of burning down the store I would suggest going in to speak with the owners. Give them the chance to fix what has upset you. If they cop an attitude then you have your answer after giving them a fair shake.

The guy who sold her the pack is one of the owners. It's two guys with a 50/50 stake. They've owned the store since 94 and I've been going there since 1996 as a 10 year old.

I bet the owner spent the other $80 and kept the other 5 packs from the new box he opened... It should of been EXACTLY $22.50 per pack, (22.50 x 6 packs is $135).... At the very least, PLEASE DO EXPLAIN THIS, and he should atleast give you a 2nd pack for the $50 if he cares about his business, and doing the right thing for his customers
I have a feeling he did this because it was a woman, and because he sensed her inexpierence... Still Props to ur girl for doing that for you! She sounds like a keeper!

I would do this. Especially, if you are a regular, they should make it right. BUT BUT it is still a very bad way to doing business for that owner.

I would just add... that blowing up at the them may not accomplish much other than make you feel better. You should confront them about it though to clear the air so to speak. And if you don't get the response you like, then just decide if your money is better spent elsewhere.

I disagree
I did what I told him to do in my earlier post at my LCS
The manager was a douche who ripped people off and treated non regular customers like crap.
I cursed him out, told the owner I wouldn't come back while he was employed there. About 18 months later I heard he had been fired a few months earlier and started going back there.
And it all felt great, letting loose on them was great, and knowing they would miss my business (I had been breaking a lot of wax at the time and it was in the middle of football season) also felt good

Agree with this, don't go in there guns blazing. Just calmly explain the situation and tell them you are very upset. It's obvious he took advantage of the situation, but yelling and cursing won't get anywhere.

In college I was taught if you want to get peoples attention before a speech you need to make a big commotion. So walk in there and push over the first rack you see and yell listen up douchers! Then begin your rant.. lol but honestly I'd just go to the better one of the two and explain to him the situation and how you feel about it. Any good business man is going to care about the success and growth of his establishment and we all know the success of his business is it's customers so they should always come first. A simple problem can always be solved easily when two grown individuals can just talk it out.
P.s I hope it all works out for you and congrats for the amazing gf..

Go into the store and give them the opportunity to fix what they've done.
If they fail/refuse to do so, then I'd torch them on social media.
Either way, it's probably time to find a new card shop. God knows what other tricks they're up to.

First of all, packs should not cost $22.50 ($135/6.)
When you divide up a box by packs, they should cost more than the price of a box since buying a box should bring you a discount. So the packs should be between $25-$30 a pack.
That being said, what happened to her is horrible. I had a customer's wife come in the other day and pretty much tell us she wanted to spend $100-$150 and didn't know what to buy him. We were not 100% sure since there were no new baseball products that we knew he would be interested in. So we recommended a few items and told her he could return anything (unopened of course) that was purchased for him that wasn't right and he could exchange them for anything he wanted.
That is how you take care of regulars. You need to go back there and ask them why a pack of 2013 Sterling costs $50. Or better yet, ask them how much the packs are first, then if they say anything less than $50, ask why she was charged $50. If the packs are $50, then tell them that is ridiculous and you will be taking your money elsewhere.
Making a scene in this situation is ridiculous. It does help sometimes, but if they are selling the 2013 packs for that price, it is their right. Although criminal. It's still their right to do so. And it's your right to not shop there.

Yup, dont like that at all.
I use two lcs, one for cases (hour drive, but very cheap cases) and one for boxes (10 minute drive, prices right at blowout).
Both know my wife by name (and my wife might be with me 5% of the time), both would never think of doing that. In fact its hey, oh your husband has been opening this product right now, he would like this, ring out and have a nice day.
If that poop would ever happen, they would lose my business. And to the boxes only place especially.....that would be substantial.
Dont stand for that, call them out rude, polite, however but dont stand for it.

If it were me i would probably go in there and rip them a new one. I could care less about a partial refund. It speaks to the integrity of the ownership if they are going to rip off a customer like that. Now thats not saying that he has to treat a walk in the same as a regular customer, who may get discounts or perks, but they should not be knowingly ripping them off. If they do this who knows what else they do. Maybe they weigh boxes/packs. Or maybe they open the rest of the packs themselves once they know the main hit is still left. No way would i frequent them anymore regardless if they make it right

Don't bother reporting them to a joke like the BBB. They wouldn't do anything. Add people in any business knows, the BBB is always bought. If you don't send them money, they give your company a bad overall grade. I'd this shop is part of the BBB, which I doubt, but if they are, they pay the BBB, so they would never downgrade that store. People that take the BBB seriously have no clue how it's run.

Thanks for the responses guys. I will definitely post an update to the situation tomorrow after I pay them a visit. It just sucks because I have 3 LCS and this is the one I like the most because the good owner in the shop is the nicest person I've ever met in the hobby. Im not looking for any sort of compensation or anything just an apology really. It's a tiny shop and I'd say I'm one of their 10 biggest spenders. I don't even care that they charge more than anybody around but because that's the shop that I've been to all my life it means something to me.
I've been here before. Back in 2006 I collected the Bears dusty dvoracek. The wife knew this and she knew I was picking up rare singles on eBay and at shows. She went to the LCS that she knew and asked if they had anything. Since we are in Chicago most places keep Bears rookies in stock. He sold her 3 Bowman base RC's and 2 Topps for $20 and told her she was lucky that he just got more in stock!
I actually picked up about 10 of each of those off this guy for $10 total. So $0.50 per card. I didnt negotiate I just asked how much and he told me. Even with those I overpaid but I still wanted them.
Flash forward to my Birthday and the wife gives me the cards and says I hope they are good ones I only paid $4 each. I told her they were great cards and I loved them. I didnt want her to be sad. Next time I was in that shop I picked up a box of cards and handed over the 5 cards and said "I have $20 in credit here". The shop owner laughed and said "That was your girlfriend?" So the fat prick knew what he did. I asked him how many other people were buying up Double D'd cards and he said not many.
He let me keep the cards and took $20 off my total but never said sorry. he just didnt want to get into a fight over it. i never went back there.

I didn't real all of the tread, just the first several responses. I would be upset, and I feel like this hobby has too many stories like this. Whether it's card manufacturers, wholesalers, or LCS taking advantage of us as consumers. It seems so pervasive that I don't know what to do with my frustration. I enjoy the hobby too much to walk away, that's not an option. So that said, the only piece of info I didn't see is what the 2013 packs are going for? I would ask for the difference back or at least in credit.

It's not that similar, but I was confronted with an issue that I'm wondering what you guys think. This most recent Black Friday, Panini promoted their BF packs pretty heavily, and I wanted to get my hands on as many as I could. The LCS I frequent did not have a system in place when I called to inquire on the Wednesday prior, and by Friday morning they still didn't. When I decided to show up they explained that I could buy from a specific list, which was mostly Panini products from early in the year, nothing newer, and that they didn't have the packs on site. I went to there wholesale warehouse unannounced and saw the packs sitting there, so they relented and let me get my hands on a few. Later the following week I find that they posted dozens of singles out of Black Friday packs on their ebay store. I don't think they ever intended to give them away as they were supposed to. I'm sorry if I hijacked this thread, not my intention. I just got worked up!

If this were my girlfriend, I would be super pissed someone took advantage of her like that. My fist inclination is to go punch them in the face but that obviously will not solve anything. I would definitely address it. Also, I would no longer go there regardless of how they make up for it. They have no issue taking advantage of people.

I would definitely address it. Also, I would no longer go there regardless of how they make up for it. They have no issue taking advantage of people.

Once you opened the pack and don't even have the receipt you lost any leverage you might have had. Owner can't prove you didn't replace the cards nor can you prove you didn't unless you filmed it.

Any updates?

Even filming it would not prove anything, but I think in this case it really should not matter

No punches were thrown. I went to the store this evening and the owners were both gone. The good owner, who I want to talk to, will be back from his Xmas vacation on Tuesday so I will be speaking with him then.
I did go to the 2nd LCS I frequent and told that owner what happened at the other store and that he would be getting all my card money from now on as opposed to the half I'd been spending with him. He then sold me a pack of 2014 Sterling for $30 (What the 2013 SHOULD have cost at the first store). I told him that was not necessary but he insisted. Such a simple gesture that all but cemented what I was already feeling. I'm not sure I even need to waste my breath at the other store as my mind is already made up where I will be spending my money.
Side note: I did see one of the many Odell Beckham Jr 1/1 Triple Thread Auto's get pulled while I was at the card store today. I don't buy Triple Threads but had the box in my hand then put it back and picked up other stuff instead. The other guy in the store asked if I'd like to see what I missed out on and of course I had to know

Over the 18 years I have been going to different card shops there is 1 almost (99% of the time) common denominator and that is card shops are VERY greedy. I am glad they made everything right with you but how many people go in their and get ripped off and things are not made right? I try not to go into card shops anymore because of the pure greed. I have recently been in a card shop where one of the employees (i guess manager of some sort) was insulting people who went in there and bashing a certain product and than laughing at people who bought it. A lot of people on this forum might be shocked if they knew the shop I was talking about. The greed has gotten so bad that i have had a card shop treat me better or worse depending on how much money i spend lol. They can really care less about the buyer, they just want your money plain and simple. Its a business I understand that aspect but have just a little appreciation for the people who pay your bills.

I would go back in and hope that both owners were in. I'd then ask how much a pack of 2013 Sterling sells for. When they answer, ask "Then why did this guy (point to bad owner) sell one to my girlfriend for $50?". Then explain that you will never do business there again and you hope the extra money they ripped of from her was worth it.
Good luck.

I actually had a coworker tell me a story similar to this one when I still lived in Reno. One of his coworkers, who was known to be a douchebag to everyone, was married to a woman who worked at one of the brothels outside of town. So one night, he picks an argument with another coworker and it ends up with him going to the brothel to pay for services with the guys wife after telling him he was "Going to f--- his wife". Apparently nobody took him serious but he actually did it. Lesson learned: If your wife works at a brothel, don't piss anyone off.

Finally went in to the store today. Talked to the good owner. He sad "Craig (other owner) is our Magic guy and he doesn't really know the football product that way but let me make it right". He then said he would give me 15% off my purchase. All I wanted was an apology and didn't get that. I bought a box and went on my way. On to a new LCS. Sucks that the owner I liked couldn't even apologize and thought he could discount his way back into my good graces. Oh well....

I would confront the lcs owner, and still never spend a dime there again. This hobby already struggles to draw in and keep new/existing collectors without total douche bags like that giving legit lcs owners a bad name.

What product and how much did you pay for it?
Then we'll know if this is a true statement or not.
I paid $85 for jumbo draft...not sure what wholesale is but haven't seen where I could find it at that price yet.

Just been watching for the most part, without serious opinion. But you got a box of draft jumbo after they screwed your gf? I was expecting something like 2012 Contenders for $90. Something worth it.
This thread, as well as you sir, suck. The LCS owners are probably still laughing. They screwed over your gf, then got you to buy from them, while you're supposed to be there GETTING EVEN OR TELLING THEM TO F*CK OFF. I really feel you dropped the ball on this.
It's hard to believe the angry OP posting on the first couple of pages is the same jerk that went into the LCS with tail between legs, looking to buy draft jumbo on a small discount.
Your gf had to be embarrassed.

The other owner didn't have to do anything. It's not like I can return the cards? What would you have done to "get even"? What does that even mean? hahahahahahahahahaha

Lol@you, pathetic op. Getting even is taking all your business elsewhere and telling them why. Not buying more crap. That's what getting even is. So go "hahaha" somewhere else. Almost everyone has called you out, and all you can do is fake laugh and roll your eyes. Whatever, dude. Who made this thread askinh for opinions? Then didn't listen to anyone and caved and bought more wax from people that didn't think enough of your gf to not screw her over.
So basically, you're saying your gfs dignity and the respect you have for her is LESS than $85.

I originally made the thread just to get people opinions on if it was shady or not because I can see both sides of the argument. I wouldn't have even posted what happened if people wouldn't have asked, nor did I expect so many people to respond. 15% off a box is his margin so I got my final box from that place at cost.
Sorry I didn't cause a scene in the store (fight, bang his wife, take a dump on his floor) like some of you said you would have done.
End of the day I busted a box today for cost and swore off the store. One final hurrah...
Get the guy who hasn't taken a dump in 6 days to go to the shop with you, that would give them something to clean up for a few days.

I disagree ... they sold his GF a pack (that they normally sell for $15) for $50 .. The solution they offered (15% discount on another purchase) only serves to put a new sale on their books - it did nothing for the original overcharged item.
I would have demanded 3 additional $15 packs at no cost - that would have made the original $50 purchase right. Any other purchases made after are on the OP.

Without a receipt and with you already opening the pack. What really was the store owner supposed to do? Whether it was intentional or not they tried to make up for it without costing themselves money but still saving you money. If you were alright with taking the 15% discount to make up for their mistake and they were willing to give you the 15% discount. Isn't that compromising to meet a resolution both parties are happy with? That is what adults do. I don't see the whole issue on how you were bought off, or how you sold your girlfriends integrity or whatever nonsense people might be saying.
Other than what they offered you (considering the circumstances) the only thing they lacked was apologizing. I think going in and talking to them respectfully was the best thing to do rather than going in, acting like a child and causing a big scene over what could have been an honest mistake. If you were alright with what they offered and as long as you think it was fair. That is all that matters. I'm sure many others feel the same way but don't want to bother posting it because they don't want to put up with certain people on this site who seem to offer little if anything except trolling and bringing people down.

Why is it nonsense? If you strip it down to the core, the guys gf goes to buy him something and is overcharged by $35. You have to defend you gfs "honor" by, at the very least, not buying from the same jackasses that just ripped her off.
I don't think going there and telling them why you won't be spending money there anymore is "causing a scene. "
He could have handled this like a man and told the LCS owners off. He instead gave them more money. And they didn't even have to say sorry.

The ONLY issue I have is he didn't get an apology.
Now if the regular price of the 2013 packs was $50, then they just overcharge for their items.
But if they are usually cheaper and they beat her up, and apology would be ideal.
Of course things are getting a bit carried away. It happens here all the time. But without the apology, I wouldn't have bought a box for $50 yet $85. Just out of principle.

Sucks that the owner I liked couldn't even apologize and thought he could discount his way back into my good graces. Oh well....
This is the part that has me rolling. He did get you back into his good graces!
You spent more money and you will be back no doubt. He owns you

7%? Where'd you get your numbers? Regardless I got the box cheaper than I would have anywhere else...in the end big deal, don't get so upset by the internet
For him, apparently not since he dished out more coin to the shop that did his girl so dirty. Yeah he was pissed and felt better by getting a 7% discount. Guess he didn't get the discount double check. He did get the reach around apparently

You broke Internet forum rule #1 by mentioning your GF at all. When people do this, it is a clear invitation to be trolled until you lose any sense of rational composure.
TOP 5 things NOT to do on the internet.
#1. NEVER mention your spouse/significant other.
#2. NEVER post pics of yourself, or your spouse/significant other.
#3. NEVER mention how much money you make.
#4. NEVER give a positive physical description of your physique or size in general.
#5. NEVER mention your elite physical prowess(Gym schedule, Black belt, MMA fighter, Marine/Special Forces/S.E.A.L.,Bouncer etc.
Learn it. Know it. Live it.
You forgot #6 never mention your occupation is a police officer or lawyer.

Okay, for a real response, I probably wouldn't have let on to my GF that she got taken advantage of. I would have pretended that it was the greatest gift in the world just so she would have felt good for getting you the gift. No reason for her to feel bad because of what some scummy LCS guy did.
Secondly, I would have went to the store while both the owners were working, gotten them both together, and explained to the nicer one what the other guy did (also explaining about the fact that they kept the higher priced packs behind the counter and he deliberately took a pack from the other box). I would then ask him how he planned on making it right. If he responds the same way he did with you (giving an excuse about the guy not knowing about sports, only offering a 15% discount and no apology to both you and more importantly to your GF), I would have told him that it wouldn't have been necessary because I would be taking my business elsewhere. I would also let the owner you like know that if this other guy did that to your GF, then he probably has done it to others too and that those people might not have done him the courtesy of letting him know why they wouldn't be back to his shop.
See, nothing disrespectful, nothing causing a scene, just honesty and a chance for him to make it up to you. This isn't about getting a box of cards for slightly less than somewhere else, this is about someone cheating someone who you supposedly care about, and in my honest opinion, if you don't care enough about that to put it above getting a little bit of a discount... well, then you have some very strange priorities.

Didn't your girl wonder why she paid $50 for something that had a $15 price tag on it?
Here's what you should have said: "No, I don't want a discount. If you won't make the original transaction right, I will have to take my business elsewhere." No need to involve tough guy antics or bodily functions to get your point across.
Several years ago, I was spending a ton at the only good LCS in the city I lived in at the time. One day one of the owners used the n-word repeatedly in an obviously racist way about a local football player who was in the NFL. I never spent another dime there, but I didn't tell them why--I wish I had.

I feel like that is a totally reasonable way to handle it too. In a perfect world the situation would have worked out that way. I'll spare going point for point on the details but bottom line if I wouldn't have taken the box at a discounted price (again, I was going to get another box of draft that day, as my girlfriend wanted to open another after pulling a super) she would have questioned why I paid more when I didn't have to according to her.
She's happy, I'm happy. We both like the good owner more than any owner we deal with (shop at 3 LCS) and both despise the bad one. For all I know it could have been an honest mistake on the bad ones part (I don't feel like it was but that's a possibility).
Thanks for at least giving me a real response.

I just got worked up!
in cases like this, if you report the shop to panini, panini will cut them off for pack promotions (i think). Hit them right where it hurts by doing that.
anyway OP- you couldn't have been that mad (or you are seriously addicted to busting wax) if a 15% discount caused you to make a purchase without a sincere apology.
GeechQuest
01-01-2015, 12:13 PM
I was originally overcharged about $15
I saved $20ish on the box I got
Could I have just asked him to give me the difference and gone to the other LCS and spent it? Sure. Should I have done that. Probably.
In the end I didn't lose any money. I didn't ask for my money back on the sterling purchase as I didn't care about the money. I wanted an apology which I got in the form of a tiny discount on something I was buying that day regardless (although without the discount I would have gone to the other store).
Until that point that store has been nothing but good to me. That owner (his name is Walt) is a stand up guy and has done great things for the hobby in Austin.
For what it's worth my girlfriend (who was the one who was screwed over) has chalked it up to her needing to know what she's purchasing before she does. She's not even upset by it anymore, nor am I.
