These past two years or so, Panini just bombed us with tons of autographs, on card and/or stickers, autograph cards especially semi stars and 'scrubs' are now everywhere and you can pick one for as low as $3 which is sad....

Even sticker autographs of a star doesn't really appeals to me anymore, unless it is for my PC I will stay away for the rest....

But now I found another love, I find PATCH are making a come back, at least in my mind....Real patches are nice...yea if you add on card auto on that patch card then you got a BOOM!....

Even a non-auto patch card sometimes ended higher sale price on ebay now, for me personally I am still hunting patches cards, especially from 2000-2010 cards where patches are PATCH not some ribs or liners like today's Panini "Patch/Prime"

Problem with patches are that they are questionable.

I've done some on card auto sets from past products, which are pretty cool when you are done.

What kills me is there are sets out there that have redemptions that will never get signed.

What's the point of putting together a really nice set if you can't ever complete it? BOOOOO

I don't trust any patch in any set even in flawless. If they can put "88" fake patch in Immaculate, why do you have a real patch in lower end product?

I view it as a nice card is a nice card, auto with a patch, just a patch, or just an auto. But yeah OP, Panini has soured many with what you mentioned.

I am starting to look at everything as just a different design. it is getting to the point where autos are so common that I would rather have a case hit than an auto rc. example in leon's case break draft I just took a melo case hit from contenders instead of a auto rc of Jonas Valanciunas from the same product and I collect raps autos! If I like the look of an auto and it is a tough pull sure ill go after and pay for it but just slapping an auto/jersey/patch on it does not do it for me anymore. I personally like the case hit 2014-15 hoops kobe all rookie team better than the rc autos you can pull out of the hobby boxes for another example.

same thing that happened to the parallel in the late 90s happened to the jersey card in early 2000's and it has happened to the auto over the past 5 years. It used to be hard to get a magic Johnson/david robinson/john stockton auto, now there are many 1000's

Lol this has been going on way before Panini. Autos have been getting flooded since mid 2000's with UD and Topps, Panini just carried on the tradition. I could find you lots of $3 autos from well before Panini took the reigns.

Patches are my main interest in the Hobby, they are what keep me interested in the hobby. You can have the same auto a thousand times and it is basically the same auto, patches are more unique. That being said, I try to avoid most patches pre 2012. Majority of Panini patches look better, and I worry less about fake patches with Panini. After all those issues when it was somewhat brought to light about Upper Deck, Topps, and Donruss's questionable practices in acquiring game worn material, I decided to stay as far away as possible from that stuff.

On card autos of course better, and if you slab a patch into it, it will be quite perfect...

In case of Panini, earlier Panini patches were 'better' patches if you compare it to present day Panini patches, nowaday they consider rib liners are patches which are not!

On the questionable patches, there were also some questionable autographes cases before, there were some certain player asked someone else to sign on his behalf....

But in the end like justdagoodstuff said that a nice card is a nice card, auto with a patch, just a patch, or just an auto.

:)

I don't think there are any patches that compare to Immaculate Jumbo patches. I agree Panini has been using trim in a bunch of different sets but that is just a fraction of the newer patches. A lot of their newer patches are just as nice or nicer than any other patches used in the past. To me trim patches are like sticker autos. I am not really a fan, but I understand their use, what I really dislike is when they use them in High end products like Flawless and Immaculate, and especially in the Immaculate Premium Patch set. But again, only some had trim patches, the Majority had amazing patches.

I definitely prefer autographs over patches any day. Whether its a sticker auto or auto on card (Honestly, both auto seems the same to me).

Problem with patches are that they are questionable.

Autographs can be questionable. Lance Stephenson, Dez Bryant.

I did in-person autographs for a couple of years and I'm getting to where I like the looks of the patch cards more (granted, I don't buy too many of them). I remember spending $25 on a Kevin McHale Fleer patch card /15 around 2004. Now the patch looks rather average but at the time it was a nice purchase. Does Fleer stuff still sell well now? Especially now that there are a ton of McHale patches on the market?

It's great that you can buy on-card autos of former NBA All-Stars for $3 to $5 on the secondary market. I've enjoyed finding some bargains recently.

I would buy more patches but it always plays on my mind that they might not be authentic, so I don't want to overpay for something that wasn't actually worn by the player.

You can never be 100% sure unless you personally witness them signing it. Jerseys cards say "Not from any specific game or event". It doesn't even say the person on the front of the card wore that jersey. If you don't think people pay people to sign stuff for them you are crazy. Nobody can be 100% sure of anything. Just have fun with it.

I would rather have a case hit than an auto rc.

Shhh. Don't mention that aloud. :D :)! I completely agree. I've been picking up all kinds of inserts. Un-numbered low print run inserts.

I agree, but it also means all the stuff you bought prior to now is going down in value.

I know you don't collect for the money... But at some point it feels like I'm just burning money for no reason.

What's after $3 autos? Are the autos going to be worth 50 cents one day?

I completely see where you're coming from. However, the way I see it, as long as you pay prices that you're happy with, then it shouldn't matter too much if their value depreciates a little bit.
