So I've had back surgery once before for a ruptured disk about 3-4 years ago. About 2-3 weeks ago when puting my two year old down for bed I felt this incredible sharp pain in my lower back. As the next few days of being unable to move and my left hip feeling like it's being stabbed, I made an appointment with the Orthopedic Dr. who performed my last surgery. At the appointment (today) an MRI was suggested to confirm what we already know - I have a ruptured disk :(
So back to baseball.
Spent the last two hours reading about some of the 2014 BDPP prospects with Auto's. I'm intrigued by one in particular who seems to be extremly Raw but extremly athletic. Gareth Morgan. Is he just one of those kids that oozes being a great athlete or does his strikeout way to much and will never be more then just "potential"?

Well, he's from the frigid north, where there is less time to play. He certainly strikes out a lot. I hear he has a very long swing, but the hope is he's athletic enough to shorten it and still have the premium power.
I watched a BP video of him after I pulled his blue auto. I do not love his swing with how he folds his arms in the follow through. He does, at least from one angle, look a little like a skinny Giancarlo Stanton in how he swings. It works for Giancarlo because his load and turn are so quick and he is strong enough to adjust the bat path if he sees a breaking ball.
Again, being a northern prospect, he might take longer to develop as he's had less time to practice and refine his swing in games. But you can't really teach power.
From a card perspective, he's cheap now and will be playing in some real hitters parks for the next few years (in short season A and A+ in particular).
Could go either way. I'm holding my blue auto until it goes up. Mostly around $30 now.

Oh, and sorry to hear about the ruptured disk. That sounds like no fun.

It's life :)! But I appreciate it. I remember watching him play in under armour/ Aflac game from either 2-3 yrs ago and he was the youngest kid playing because just like you said he was from the great up north. Thanks for your write up, very good info.

Gareth Morgan was one of the top five high school prospects for this year's draft class two years ago. Then scouts realized he can't hit. Same thing with Michael Gettys.
Gareth might be the shyest top prospect I've ever come across. There won't be any Chad Johnson antics with him.

What happened with Gettys?

Not a fan. Every prospect has potential, no doubt. I just feel that he had good numbers vs. players in Canada...well, Canada...where baseball probably ranks behind figure skating in popularity.
Now that he is being exposed to players his age in the AZL, he's having a hard time adjusting.
I see him finally "getting" it in the Cal League...but at 22 (after repeating some levels). But at that time, I think he's completely off the prospect radar.
Just my opinion.

Same as Morgan. Toolsy, but scouts realized he can't hit. Would have been an Alex Jackson caliber prospect if he could hit.
