That was legal but still brutal, he could have easily just pushed him out of the way. I wanted MSU to win, I think this is the only time I've seen a big hit and felt bad for the recipient.

Agree, a head shot in slow mo will show the head pushed back.
Shoulder hit should show the head move forward.
Will be the end of the debate.

Also, the hitter can't be over 175 himself. This isn't some LB lining up the punter while having a 40-60 lb advantage. Just seems, without looking it up, the hitter can't possibly outweigh the punter. If he does, it's not much.

He looks back as if he knew what he did was wrong. He loaded up by crouching and then launched into a small kicker that wasn't looking. A simple block or push would have done the job.

The state of Michigan is cornering the market on cheap shots lately.

that is exactly how you are taught to hit someone......... if he would have hit him in the head/shoulders area it wouldn't have impacted him the same way, it's obvious he caught him in the chest area, you aren't going to hit someone in the head and send them flying backwards, he clearly caught his bodyweight and sent him backwards.......

but the kicker was trying to play superman in that situation and put himself in a bad spot, do you see how fast he took off trying to fix that botched play? he was gone before anyone else even reacted.

If he'd dropped down and hit the kicker's legs everyone would be calling a cheap shot to. The dude layed one hell of a block, its football, if you can't handle getting hit or hitting you should play golf. Legal hit, was it necessary probably not but it happened. No flags clean hard hit end of discussion.

Totally unnecessary hit, one of these days some one is going to die on the football field due to these kinds of hits, and then the rules will be become so draconian that it will be like two hand touch.

If people want football to have more contact and hard hitting then we should all hate hits like this. It served no purpose and could have killed someone.

Just no, this is not how you are taught to hit, first you are supposed actually try and be in front of the person, not from the side as it could have been a clip.

Secondly you are taught to go head up, between the waist and numbers, not between the shoulder and neck area.

The fact that he sprung upwards into him shows to me it was an opportunity type hit and you know when someone doesn't see you. It is very similar to kind of hits that got Hines Ward into trouble and a rep as a dirty player. Remember him breaking a guy's jaw on a similar hit against the Bengals?

Another thing is you don't have enough control to go that high and know if you are or aren't going to hit someone in the head. 2 inches higher and we could of had a serious injury.

Also it looks like the punter got a concussion and those can lead to life long health issues, high mortality and suicide rates.

NCAA rulebook: Chapter 29, section 3.3-The kicker should be treated as a special player on blocked field goals. He must not be touched, blocked or otherwise impeded even if he is attempting to tackle an opponent. Furthermore, evil or cross-eyed looks will result in a 15 yard penalty and immediate rejection....... if he is attempting to make a play then he is fair game. In no way does the person laying the block have time to go "oh my, that is the kicker, I shall hit him not as hard". That's a football play, plain and simple. If the kicker never wants to risk getting hit like that then either don't play the game or flop down on the ground.

I never said it was a clip, if you could actually read I said you are taught to hit someone with their shoulders in front of you otherwise you might clip them especially on play like this.

Mark my words it will happen and already has in High School, someone will get hit like this, his head will hit so hard on the turf that it will cause a brain hemorrhage that will lead to death. Head to head isn't always the issue, hitting someone when they aren't ready can lead to unattended consequences.

Yeah just blocking him was too good for a low life kicker like him, in fact giving him a concussion which might cause untold suffering later in life is also too good.

They should have just each taken turns kicking him in the nuts while someone rapes his mother in front of him. That would teach him not to miss field goals again.

So you're Mr. Big Time Hot Shot Football Man and you don't realize players get hit all the time when they are not ready?

What am I missing? :confused::confused:

What you are missing is that plays like this are what caused the rules changes to begin with. Again it's similar to what Hines Ward got called out for, hitting folks not looking for no real good reason.

I am just advocating that if he had hit him between the waist and between the numbers area it would have been just as effective a hit, exploding upwards in the shoulder/neck area was a dangerous place to hit someone not expecting a hit. One day someone will get seriously hurt and then there will be rules like, can't hit kickers or punters etc. Hell you almost can't hit QB's already, do people want it to get worse?

Some restraint by these players will go a long ways to keeping the game fun.

Again guy, I am talking about what you teach someone to do when playing FB and that is to hit above waist, between numbers, and when their shoulders are in front of you otherwise if you don't you could clip or hit in the back either one, it's not exclusive, both penalties could be called.

If the kicker doesn't want to get hit then don't go for the tackle.

This is ignorant as hell, if you're on the field, you're part of the coverage team. Give me a break.

It was a nice hit, but I'm not celebrating that, the guy looked like a robot who's power had been cut off, that means he's got a serious concussion.

Best comment of the thread. WI's kicker has been drinking too much beer and eating too much cheese. Next year, he'll be on the O-Line! :)!:)!:)!

On a partially related note. I laid out the kicker twice during the first two kickoffs in one of my games this year when I was blocking for our return man. After the second hit the ref went up to me and told me he would flag me if I hit him again saying the kicker was a defenseless player. So naturally my coach yelled at the ref and told him if he doesn't want to get hit he should quit and go play soccer.
