View Full Version : OPINION: Should THIS Marvel toon be removed from sets?

Everyone who's ever picked up a comic book has a favorite Marvel character. Wolverine, Spiderman, Gambit, Rocket, Psylocke - you name it; it's someone's favorite. Having enjoyed comics while young, and now an avid Marvel collector as an adult, I've found one thing to be static:

"we don't like the Red Skull".

http://i57.tinypic.com/vec3lt.jpg

Sure, there is a ton of history behind this guy - first appearance 1941; can we say long lasting?! Holy Crow! Yet still, after nearly 75 years, you still pull a chase card out of a pack and say to yourself "really?!". He's the last you want, and the first you sell. Heck, even my 59 year old, life-long nerd uncle laughed when I pulled his PMG out of a pack this Christmas.

I hereby vote, by matter of opinion, to retire this ancient icon from our newly minted sets; as an effort to make way for the real villains this century.

I, for one, am glad that we all do not like the same things. I like the red skull, and would be happy to pull a red skull sketch from a pack. In fact I recently bought an 11X17 commissioned sketch of the red skull.

So in answer to your question, I may be in the minority but I would not remove the red skull from future sets.

Red Skull makes for some good sketch cards. I'd probably keep him.

Instead, I'd probably retire Iceman, who is the subject of many a boring sketch card. Misty Knight is a character who pops up in every set nowadays that could also probably be cut from a character list.

Kingpin and Blob are also horrible pulls. Who wants to pull a card of a fat guy?

There's a big-time Blob collector over on Scoundrel.

I enjoy drawing Red Skull. He's awesome, visually.

I'm with you there. I do l've iceman (personal favorite). Collecting his patch cards, too! Ever since he was the first x-men action figure my parents bought me. I've picked up a couple bomb sketches.

I'm with you on KingPin. The guy is a nobody, with no powers besides being able to eat a stack of big macs before you can blink your eyes. McD mascot.

Blob is definitely cool. Let's face it - he's a mutant, and runs with the brotherhood. His fat means something. I don't see many of his cards, either. The jusko was amazing, though.

I wouldn't like red skull either but theres a lot of characters I wouldnt want to have a sketch of. I dont do sketch cards too random boxes too expensive. I get commissions done of specific characters usually from artists that have actually drawn them for the published comics. For cheaper than the price of most boxes I can get actual hand drawn pages from comics.

I'm cool with limiting the characters that can be drawn for a specific set, based on the theme of the set. Otherwise, I tend to think any character, popular or unknown, should be fair game for artists.

This is a fun idea for a thread. Just quickly browsed my collection to see if I have any characters discussed.

I have one sketch each of 2 characters that I mentioned as being lousy characters to include in a character list, but I collect the artist (Mike Kunkel) so they stay in my collection.

1. Kingpin... who is so fat he doesn't even fit on the card!

http://sketchcollectors.com/gallery/finfangfan/1354933707.jpg

2. The Blob (I kind of like this one... fat guy dancing!)

http://sketchcollectors.com/gallery/finfangfan/1354933808.jpg

And I still disagree about Red Skull being a bad subject. I mean there are hundreds of cool poses that can be done with a guy who has a skull for a head... Here is a cool Ted Dastick...

I think the FF issue is really a licensing dispute between Disney and Fox. Marvel had to do a lot of desperate things when they were near bankruptcy a handful of times.
Now that Marvel is rich, they want to complete their cinematic universe but they can't because Fox won't play ball. The sketchcard restrictions are just a symptom of the licensing dispute.

Marvel did get Spidey back, so there is hope.

Yeah, that FF news is a "little dated" for most of us, but I just saw the story from that Bleeding Cool link yesterday :coffee: and it had the date of June 11, 2015 on it. So since it was less than 2 weeks old, I thought it might be "new" news for some collectors:D

I think he is referring to the fact that FF (and others) have been on the "do not draw" list for over a year now. The list was posted in the MP2014 thread by the artist who did the base set. So, it's old news in that regard.

Yes, the four cards on the right are the reference art. Joe Jusko did the original for the 1992 Marvel Masterpieces set. The 2016 Marvel Masterpieces set was also done by Joe Jusko, and all the sketch cards in that set were inspired by a cards done in the 1992 set.

Isn't there some wording like "inspired by" on the back of the sketch card so that the artists could name which card they were taking inspiration from?
