View Full Version : Do sticker auto's fade?

I was at the local shop yesterday and this conversation....well..hobby enthusiasts so more like, argument, came up.

Apparently on card auto's are the way to go as they wont fade, others felt it depended on the card and the gloss of the card. Some felt all sticker auto's fade, some felt only early stickers caused fading and it has been corrected. Now mind you, this was about 8 guys. So I figured a better place to ask would be here with more experience and more users to prove or disprove these theories.

The card in my avatar is from 1998. No fading what so ever. So I'm inclined to believe if any on cards do fade, it must be based on what the front of the card is made of regarding gloss/coating.

I can't say any of my sticker auto's have faded either. Though I tend to steer clear of sticker auto's in general so I don't have many examples for those.

What are your opinions/experiences?

I don't think the sticker will promote fading however I do prefer the on card autos for sure. I have the same card as you do in your avatar. Still very crisp.

That's how I feel. The only thing I've know to cause fading is exposure to light for long periods of time. Which I found completely ironic during the argument at the card shop yesterday. Sticker fading or not, they were arguing over glass cases that were as bright as the sun with auto's sitting underneath them as I grit my teeth and withheld from a smart ass comment lol.

UV light is what makes them fade. Unless the lighting in the cases are tanning booth lights, or are in direct sunlight, they shouldn't noticeably fade. It's the ink and the type of light that determine fading, really, not the type of auto it is. I have a Favre auto'd mini helmet that a friend gave me back in the early 90's that I didn't think about that with and left it out in rooms with a lot of windows, and the auto is pretty much completely gone. I have an auto'd concert poster in a frame that has the UV protectant plexiglass in it that I've had for about as long that hasn't faded at all....

Like you stated above regarding what the card is made of: I remember those old Laserview Inscriptions from the mid-90's fading really bad - those weren't sticker autos, but autos on a plastic card.

I'm in the camp of "light fades autos" as well. Not to say that the surface of a card wont affect and auto. Look at signatures on patches and you'll see what i mean. But outside of a porous surface light will eat your signatures.

I know people that spend a ton of cash making sure every frame is UV or every display case is UV and i tell them all the same thing...

Count your windows. Then go to Home Depot and buy UV film. For $10 per opening you now protected that entire room.

I buy the magnetic holders for my cards that are 99% UV protected. They then go in a wooden case that has 4 shelves, the front windowed door to the case is covered by a blanket. Looks bootleg as all get out, but keeps everything safe from light.

Yes sticker autos can fade. Back home, my friend used to display his Tomlinson Contenders auto on a little standee on his rooms desk. Fast forward like 14 years later and it's still there. The last time I visited a couple of years ago I saw it and half of the auto is a yellowish outline.

I use tool cases that i bought from Sears. They hold a ton of 1 screw or touch cases, are made for all the weight, and I probably have at least 2,000 cased cards in each one. for $300 they work perfect for me. Also no light :)!

Grid, that is awesome. I may have to invest in something like that

And yes, I also agree with most everyone else that light fades the ink on autos (and probably the image on the card as well). I don't think it's just UV light though - I'd suspect visible light and possibly even the environment (humidity, dust, etc) can affect the ink. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I haven't seen this before...what a great idea! I might have to steal this idea from you...

I havent seen that much fading on older stickers I checked...
but I do have a few signed on leather patches from some older sets where the auto was on fake leather and those are fading really badly...
especially a couple on white (fake) leather basketball sigs - 2010 timeless treasures .. not timeless I guess

Stickers are good.

However, signed on jersey and that crappy Sweet Spot, especially baseball, UD product, I would worry. I had the Donruss Zenith Rodgers jersey auto and it was starting to fade. Kept it in a safe with zero light.

That is an auto I wanted to get several times but noticed 95% of them do have fading. Interesting. Note to self, stay away from cards that have signatures on the jerseys themselves.

I will see if I can pull a before and after photo when I get home.

Prime example. The only problem I have is most of these cards are signed in blue ink. This looks to be black. It could be the scanner, I don't know. I won't be buying it I have one already.

I had the card for almost 5 years. In storage, no light exposure.

Wow, that's brutal. This is exactly what I'm afraid of with autos directly on some type of fabric and those '11 Treasures cards on the fake white leather.

freethrowtommy, thanks for sharing. I'm sorry that happened to your Rodgers. Man. I'll be making sure to steer clear of auto's on fabric. There was one of Elway I have in my watch list on eBay, not anymore!
