THIS JUST IN: Knicks buy out Amar'e Stoudemire. Stoudemire signed 5-year, $99.7M deal in 2010. (via @NYDailyNews)
As ESPN reported last week, Mavericks are frontrunners to sign Amar'e Stoudemire once he clears waivers. Clippers and Suns also interested
@marcstein
Wishing him the best on a contending team

What happened to him. He and Kirilenko were once great ones every night. They simply vanished.
Finally Knicks are making some right moves , give them 5 years and they'll be in the finals

People don't stay young/in their prime forever. Plus he's had a ton of injuries over the last seven seasons

With what? Knicks are not an attractive destination. Yes big city but MSG is more famous for boxing and wrestling than it is basketball. Even hockey is better in MSG.

Your joking right? MSG is the meca of basketball. Did you not hear curry he said "everyone wants to have one of their best games in NYC at the Garden" It is THE center of the basketball world and with Phil at the helm players will def want to go there.
Back on topic. Good for the Knicks... First step in turning things around and good for amare maybe he can play 15 mins a game and help someone win.

United Center and Staples Center has held more titles. Yes I know Garden is famous for older days but it's more boxing and wrestling historical.

You don't understand how bad it has been in NY since younger Dolan inserted himself.
The Knicks won 50 games 2 years ago and have sucked the other 14 of 15 years. Its the Mecca because of its history, not its present or future.
Amare is still good but this team is so bad. EVeryone's numbers are down. Carmelo comes in, gets his 24-28 points and the Knicks lose.
Amare can still run, jump, back down, and block...he'll be a great pick up for the Mavs.

So, he got paid and pussed out? Sounds like it. Professional sports need to fight the unions and restructure contracts based on contributions.
Unions are evil
NYC has sucked for sports for decades. MSG is only for quality drugs and that likely ended in the 80s. yankees cheated the system they owned.

Seams like I am in the minority for thinking that ballers want to live in NYC and play at MSG.
I am not arguing that the knicks have sucked. I am arguing that it has nothing to do with people not "wanting" to go. The management has just been incompetent. Maybe I am wrong but I always though MSG was the place to play. Could be wrong as I don't know any NBA players on a personal level.

No, he was a superstar on a promising team and then they traded away all that promise for Carmelo. Then he got hurt and now that he is back, he wants a great team- like he was promised.

I know Phil is there now, so things may be changing. Really think about how bad it got in the 00's and then with Isiah Thomas. They chased away Don Cheany, Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown, Mike Dantoni, Mike Woodson...all winners!!!
Here are some players that got paid by the Knicks in those years:
Eddie Curry
Randolph (good now, but fat slug then)
Marbury
Q Rich
Vin Baker
Anfernee
Steve Francis
Jared Jeffries
Tim Thomas
A few hundred million wasted, but you gave up draft picks for these guys!
Check out their 2004 roster. (http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/NYK/2004.html) You think champions want to play here?
The Garden is still the Mecca, jst not the center of the NBA anymore.
To be honest, I'm surprised the fans stay.

They wouldn't be that bad if the ownership didn't constantly chase talent away.
Your last post was even more confusing than your first. The Garden and the Knicks are owned by the same guy that screws them both up.
For instance: Lebron had multiple opportunities to come to NY, he didn't.
More recently, Steve Kerr could have coached here, under Phil, but didn't...
talent hates the Garden because of the way the Garden is run. And its not changing. You can't fire owners. Donald Sterling did many racist stunts, publicaly, for years!!!
Just pray Dolan says something racist on recording and he may be forced to sell.

Mr pushups......
He knows Phoenix is out simply b/c he can not be what people remembered him to be.
Clippers already have chemistry issues. This may just confuse them more. But with Blake out??
Mavericks seem to be in the mix for every name that comes across the wire. Not sure why but why not?
Chances are he'll land in Cleveland. They can always use more talent /sarcasm

He was a bad signing because he was coming off major surgery and the Knicks gave him a ton of money and didnt protect themselves through insurance.
Hes a decent player for 10-15 minutes a night, but thats it. He will never be healthy again unfortunately.
Just another A+ move by a terribly run franchise
I think he lands in Dallas, but man San Antonio would be fun

So between this and Josh Smith, is there now a financial incentive for well-paid players to sign the big contract, suck it up big time, and then get paid more after getting released and then picked up by another team?

And you've also got special cases like Jamaal Tinsley with the Pacers years ago. They paid him to sit at home and stay away from the team.

wow this thread has derailed hard. I love amare. unfortunately the ones you love hurt you the most. he's the only reason we had any of these bigger names coming to nyc. when we sucked balls and LeBron, bosh, wade etc all didn't wanna come amare said, i'm in!
so to me he will always be remembered as the guy who took a shot on us and got us back on the map with his mvp type first season. injuries made everything after his 2nd year a bust but it happens to many great players.
sad we bought him out but it's the right move for both parties.

He didnt take a shot on the Knicks, they offered way more than anyone else. Its not like he took some discount and gave the Knicks this big break. Knicks overpaid becuase everyone else told em no.

The Dallas Mavericks have officially signed Amare Stoudemire
:D Rondo and Chandler back in the lineup this week ... let's start rackin' up those wins! (Although, our offense is SOOOO much smoother without Rondo. He may be great defensively, but unless he improves offensively he's such a weak link that I feel he's actually WORSE on the court than off! ... we'll see if he can start shooting the ball better - I mean, Rubio seems to have overcome that hurdle this season!) :)
